i imagine there’s a lot of pressure, at the very least. Like stories from Toriyama make it clear there’s something to the power structure that makes it hard to say no. But yeah force is probably a bad choice of word
I mean, series back in the Golden Age had very little in the way of long-term planning, so the guidance of editors was probably even more valued back then.

I hesitate to ask but what’s your source on that golden age claim? Like both in “where does it come from” and “is there proof things are different in other time periods”. Because that seems a bold claim

I don't see where the long-term planning thing is a lie? Most series from that period were pretty clearly made up as the writers went along without much in the way of planning. As for the editors having more influence, that's just speculation on my part, since it's easier to agree with someone's suggestions when really they are about as in the know as you are regarding where the story is going.

Is this in reference to his android/cell arc changes?

I think that was just more professional respect for his ex and current editor. I doubt any editor could force the hand of Akira Toriyama at that point in time.

Did you read most series from that period which were pretty clearly made up as the writers went along without much in the way of planning?
Please, there's long-term planned and not planned series at every generation. Also, mangaka having fun and liberties with their series is not always lack of planning.

I’m not calling it a lie, it just seems a big thing to say without backing it up, is all. Like there were definitely creators who flew by the seat of their pants, but I think that’s still very much the case today.

It’s more a reference to the sort of thing Kanzenshuu talk about in their intended endings guide, but without revisiting the whole thing I think you’re probably on the money

In the intended ending guide, it is mentioned that it is pretty unlikely editors have forced Toriyama to continue.

This even mentions when Toriyama imposed his ideas on the editors, so that Goku would become an adult (Toriyama even threatened to finish the manga if he wasn't allowed).

You mean Toriyama, don't you? Kurumada is Saint Seiya author

Yeah. I mean Toriyama.

I was looking about Saint Seiya before, so I mixed the names. I'm sorry for that.

"This and that and this are OFFICIALLY an instant flop, blablabla"

That guy cant see an manga on a bigger picture.. god
ftfy

Why does it matter? I don’t really view it as a serious enough thing to get upset about
if it's not a big deal then move the discussion to its proper thread
we've seen it a many times before already, it's not worth wasting more pages of this thread on it

Feel like Samurai 8 is finally finding its footing for me personally. Enjoyed last chapter and today’s chapter quite a lot. All it took was more characters entering story. Characters that are clearly meant to be the main cast that is.
It's funny because today i was exactly thinking about how Kishimoto it's actually very smart planning Samurai 8, you see, every first SJ manga volume has 7 chapters, and when you look at the first 7 chapters of Samurai 8 as a whole, it's perfectly structured to be read as a first volume, you have 7 chapters where he introduce the main characters, work their personality, do all the exposition stuff about the world, powers and etc, and he finish chapter 7 (end of vol 1) with a spread page introducing a new villain with a super cool design to make the readers think "wow, now the story it's really starting, i'm hyped, gonna read vol 2!", and it's working with weekly readers!

Also, this is what makes me think that they will release vol 1 and 2 at the same time in October like Toriko, it would be a smart choice in my opinion.

Happens to the best of us.

I do like that Kanzenshuu say there’s only one instance of Toriyama ever really saying he was forced to continue. The whole piece goes a long way to dispel a lot of assumed knowledge, which I feel like is an approach missing from manga communities at large

It's just a pity that this was not very effective, as it divided opinions. But the last two chapters were up to that good.

Who is that?

You don't know...
A standardized volume of Jump manga is 200 pages. Samurai 8's first and second chapters are longer than usual at 72 and 33 pages. The only way Chapter 7 would be included is if they bumped up the price, which would be a bone-headed decision since higher prices wards off purchases.

basically an old meme from this thread

it's Nante Koddai! Pharaoh-kun a Saikyo Jump manga that replaced MHA the first time it went to hiatus

ever since then it became a meme, everytime MHA is absent people shitpost about Pharaoh-kun replacing it

or posting fake ToC with Pharaoh-kun instead of MHA

Naruto has volumes that were 250ish chapters. I don’t see why they couldn’t do it with S8 given the amount of coverage and promo they’re giving it.

What I find amazing about toriyama is that he would just dick around building models all week and then finish the chapter in 1.5 days and submit it. helps that it was only 14 pages per but still thats pretty incredible
