look at all the people forgetting Jump snatched Boichi

anyway...

Kenta Yuzuriha the mangaka of Hakutei no Erica (horse racing oneshot) did a fanart for HZ ending
they're Kawada's assistant

inb4 you get excited about them being free and that mean Hakutei no Erica might get a series, they also work as an assistant for Yoco Akiyama (that's why their artstyle is almost identical)

and so they might be making the new Hero Academia spinoff with her

Well, here's an idea for a question, regarding the Failure 5 (Saiyuki, Yui, Taisei, Beast, Shinobi), what do you think could've been done that might've saved the series? Curious what people might think.

I haven't read enough chapters of Saiyuki or Yui to comment on those, but:

Double Taisei
This manga really needed to go in one of two directions to be a more gripping experience: either take more lengths to teach the reader shogi, or focus more intently on character arcs and development. Instead it assumes the reader already knows how to play, and jumps from character to character at kind of a rapid pace without letting anyone stick around for too long. So now the audience is... shogi players with a short attention span? DT should have spent more time figuring out precisely who it was for.

Tokyo Shinobi Squad
I think a lot of people bailed immediately with the nationalist prologue, so maybe... not have a nationalist prologue. Maybe establish a worthy primary antagonist a little sooner? I think otherwise it's kind of on the right track, if proceeding along that track a little slowly. TSS is establishing parts of the setting with some smaller arcs, and giving each member of the main cast a spotlight before bringing in a major threat for them to face. That's pretty solid, imo. Like I've said before, I think Tokyo Shinobi Squad just might survive longer than people think.

Beast Children
Beast Children had an excellent start, and the thing that shot it in the foot was when they completely failed to properly introduce Sakura's rugby team. 15 people shown in a single panel at once, half of them look incredibly similar to each other, and nearly no effort was made to show anything that stands out about their personalities for several chapters. BC should have had Sakura meet each member of the team on a 1 by 1 basis, so that we could get to know each member. Then when we got the group shot we could have actually cared about the people in that shot. The good news is that they've begun doing exactly that with the latest chapter, which is why I think that Beast Children is also a series with a serious shot at surviving! The current arc focusing on a smaller team is an fantastic direction to focus on.

Wait until the next volume.

When the anime becomes established we will see the first results.

But the reader really knows about shogi, after all Taisei is the third shogi manga published on shonen jump, and the second momiji no kitetsu followed this method of teaching the reader about shogi and was canceled. Still, I think the guy should have published the shinigiwa that looked better.

What? Having other past shogi manga in the magazine doesn't mean the readers know how to play anything. What about the magazine's new readers? The people who only buy the volumes?

New readers are not as ignorant as we think, there are plenty of shogi manga and anime on the market that show how the game works.

There's plenty of books and shows showing how chess works but if I was reading a manga that covers chess how Double Taisei covers Shogi I'd have no idea what was going on in the game either.

You guys are realizing that even though double taisei is not working well in the jump, it's not because it teaches how shogi works.
Both momonofu and kitetsu bothered to introduce the game and the rules and yet they were canceled.
I don't know what it would take for a shogi manga to make a successful jump, and I don't want to defend Taisei but at least he tried something different even though it was a flop.

Sure but has there been any successful Jump series following a game/sport that didn't explain it properly? Explaining doesn't guarantee success but I think not explaining guarantees failure

I wonder if Mashima is preparing for a potential WSJ debut? Edens Zero hasn’t really taken off in Japan as hoped and he’s done all he could there in Kodansha. Partner him up with a proper writer and we’re eating good
I am also thinking that Mashima might start a new series in Jump, after all WSJ is the highest selling magazine in Japan.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Who knows Tsukada and Mashima may collaborate to create a new series.

Well, here's an idea for a question, regarding the Failure 5 (Saiyuki, Yui, Taisei, Beast, Shinobi), what do you think could've been done that might've saved the series? Curious what people might think.
Saiyuki:
The very beginning (chapters 1-3~) was excellent. What wrecked the series' chances was the introduction of the main villain so early and having that pointless early fight with him (which also unlocked the protags super-mode and immediate cancellation vibes). Cut that, trim down the exposition and get to the introduction of the side characters & the first proper arc earlier (chapter 7~). Better explain those deeper concepts during missions when you have clear examples and some personal stakes.
Make sure to keep the possibility to introduce more interesting power variations later instead of limiting yourself to "reshape staff" and "physical enhancement" by definition.

Yui:
Idk, the series was deeply conceptually flawed, even if a few early chapters were fun. Maybe have White Yui be less painfully boring and the male lead more likable? I honestly would've preferred if the series was more of a female delinquent series and 90% about Black Yui. Dropped it too early to say more about the genre shift.
Tbh, going heavier for the 90s-style fanservice from ch1 could have also helped its popularity, cuz the artstyle is quite good.

Beast:
I still see a chance that it could recover, and it honestly did a lot of things rather well. Main problems might again be that it takes way too long to properly introduce the team and has the main lead have such an unoriginal specialty. Also, I personally was very annoyed by HOW the team was first introduced (super skilled but uncoordinated without their leader)... it didn't make them come of as a team I'd wanna follow.

TSS:
Honestly... not exist?
Cut the nationalism, cut the godawful basic popculture references, completely rewrite the lead and his tigerman-lancer, define their powers&limitations better, learn how to properly structure action scenes, take stuff more seriously in general if you wanna do an urban scifi-series...
As mentioned, I'm now enjoying it for it's ridiculous badness, but I'm not sure if that will improve it's rankings. It sure as heck doesn't make it a legit good series.

People need to realize that Mashima is so successful in Magazine because he is one of the few who occupys the battle shonen niche there and the way his Manga is structured appeals directly to Magazine readers. In Jump, he would be just one of many battle shonen mangaka and his flaws would be too apparent for him to survive longterm there.
