Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Actually, taking it a step back even further, what exactly is the point of this new app? How exactly is it going to be different from Jump+ and MangaPlus?
It allows reading WSJ issues for free if enough people are connected together through Bluetooth, from what I can understand.

Japan does not have a MangaPlus alternative where free chapters are posted when the magazine is out, so it is a bit different.
Add that is only for kids, people older than 18+ are not allowed to use the app.

It seems the app is overall the latest attempt from Nakano to try and get younger readers on Jump again. The app even restricts use for anyone over 18.

Also, you have to literally jump to unlock chapters, which makes this the absolute worst app for the kid with an injured leg.

I thought the way to unlock chapters were that kids have to get more friends to download the app? The more friends you have, the more chapters/series you unlock?.

Here is a lic of the app

The app looks fun and interactive tho. Cute KnY wallpaper btw.

The character drawings in Dricam are kind of basic, but the skies look wonderful. The author really knows how to take advantage of the colour there. I hope they come back with something with even more beautiful backgrounds/landscapes.

The latest chapter of Curtain's Up was great as well. Nothing's been said yet, but the series isn't selling well and the story is well into the climax (of the arc and/or series), so this one might be ending soon, too. If that happens, I really hope the mangaka will also stick around because I like the character depth they put into the story.

Is it normal for Jump+ mangaka to stay with the magazine after finishing a series? Or is the service too young to have examples of this?

That's even worse
If it's a app for kids and designed precisely for them, so isn't supposed to be for people over 18 or appeal to them, so not really worse

Well, we have plenty of cases of mangaka from Jump+ moving to the main WSJ publication thus far. Taishi Tsutsui went from doing a Nisekoi spinoff on + to doing We Never Learn, Seiji Hayashi went from doing a Jump+ mini to doing I'm From Japan, Tatsuki Fujimoto went from Fire Punch in + to Chainsaw Man in WSJ, and now we have Hatomune Tsurun going from Naked Swan to doing Mitama Secureity.

Likewise, we have cases of WSJ authors working in Jump+, Kenta Shinohara being easily the most famous example, though others like Ryohei Yamamoto (E-Robot, Love Rush) also did that, and others like Shun Numa and Tsunehiro Date had one-shots published on the digital platform. It seems that there's just overlap between the various fields, Tatsuya Endo and Yuji Kaku, Jump+'s biggest creators, started in SQ, so that's something to consider as well.

So far it's been more of a trend to Jump authors go to Plus and find success than the opposite, beside the 2 examples above we have Ikezawa Haruto getting a hit with 2.5D Seduction, Sasaki Kenji with Love Dester, Yasuhiro Kano with Kiss x Death, Tanaka Yasuki (Kagijin, Hitomi no Catoblepas) with Summer Time Render, Kaito with Ao no Flag, Usuta Kyousuke (Jaguar) with Food Fighter Tabelu and i'm sure there are others that i don't remember now and probably the list will just get bigger with the time, Plus is shaping up to be some really good alternative for when authors gets wasted in the main magazine.

It's more that being in Jump+ comes with considerably fewer restrictions. Since there's fewer competition and no upper capacity limit on series, serialization only get the axe if their sales are really bad, and you have more room to built some kind of niche audience. The Jump+ authors who moved to the main mag have all been successful ones anyway (except Seiji Hayashi, whom I assume got the gig because of a gas leak in Shueisha).

Also, why do you mention Usuta? Man did two of the most popular gag manga in Jump history.

I don't think it's any strategy. The app is the second winner from a App Development Contest Jump held long ago.

Given that Jump adapts a lot of Trigger series into manga, do you guys think we’ll ever see the reverse?

Trigger adapting a Jump series? Given that Trigger usually sticks to anime only series
Maybe but there's hardly any series in Jump that I could see them working on. I don't think they've done a manga/LN adaptation before. There was Ryoko (series from Sunday), that if it wasn't axed then I think the odds of it being adapted by Trigger were quite high imo.

The comment maybe sounded like i was only talking about failing authors but it's overall

Well, this past year for the 2019 publication year for Weekly Shonen Jump was certainly an interesting one. When both including and excluding color pages from the calculation, One Piece once again comes out on top (yet another metric it beats Kimetsu in lol). But speaking seriously, calling Kimetsu the big winner for the year not just for WSJ, but for all companies cumulatively would be an understatement. Amazingly enough, the series was able to demonstrate what the power of a good story coupled with an excellent anime adaptation can do for a series' backlog.

Looking at the magazine as a whole, many of the series managed to obtain perfect attendance this past year: Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san, Kimetsu no Yaiba, We Never Learn, Act-Age, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw-Man. As for color pages, We Never Learn and Haikyuu!! tied for the most with 13 a piece!.

While several veteran series had amazing years, unless your name was Chainsaw-Man, you unfortunately struggled greatly during 2019 if you were a newbie, no matter how much promise was initially shown. WSJ started 11 new series during 2019, and of those new series, 5 of them already concluded during 2019, with 2 more set to conclude at the very beginning of 2020. Farewell David-kun and Double Taisei, not many may miss you, but I will! In addition, several veteran series wrapped up this year and we bid farewell to Shokugeki no Soma and Hinomaru Zumo. In total, 8 series ended in 2019, Boruto and Jimoto ga Japan transferred out to other publications, and Hunter x Hunter remained in hiatus the entire year.

Looking ahead, 2020 is set to be an interesting year for WSJ. Many of the veteran series are either officially in their final arcs or are obviously coming to their natural conclusions. This year, we will likely say farewell to We Never Learn and The Promised Neverland, with the latter especially being a huge hit to WSJ. In addition, Yuuna could end whenever it wants, and both Kimetsu and Haikyuu are entering their final stages. With our first taste of 2020 serializations being teased with Zipman and Agravity Boys, the future remains uncertain for our newer series. Yozakura and Mitama both haven't established themselves yet, and even Samurai 8 has struggled to stay afloat in the TOC. I, for one, am really interested to see what the upcoming TOCs will look like now that 4 of the previous 5 occupants have been or will soon be concluded. I'm choosing to remain optimistic for the upcoming year, and have a good feeling we'll get some new romcoms this year, so I hope WSJ and everyone else has a great upcoming year!

Trigger did inoubattle, a light novel series. I think if Jump and a production team wanted to, they could get Trigger to do a Jump adaptation.

In overall positions is impossible to beat OP since the editors just put the manga in first or second place during the entire year with some rare third place, but Yaiba totally beat One Piece this year in number of "1st place" in the toc, 18 x 12 of One Piece, which is something really rare to achieve.

This can't be real.
Nakano impresses me sometimes
