Hm, Zipman... can't decide if all this can still be called homage or if it is ripping too much overall. Or if is just normal tropes being applied without thinking of the original. But since he was Horikoshi's assistant at one point apparently, you kinda connect the dots on your own.
I guess it was an okay start. Will have to wait and see.

Unless you're talking about coat-brother. He's confident enough, I guess (actually my first impression is that he's an arrogant a***ole, but we haven't been properly introduced yet).

I'm sure if you tried harder to understand what I meant it would be clear I meant how he is loud, acts confident, is relatively direct, and straightforward.

It's basically me saying I'm glad we have another Naruto personality type, even though arguably Naruto was depressed as shit a lot as well

Zipman's debut is a very competent one with solid art, but it also feels... "standard" to me. There's not a lot about it that feels unique to me yet, and a lot of WSJ's recent successes have had a feeling of "there's nothing currently running that's much like this". Obviously there aren't any other mech manga in WSJ itself right now, but I don't know if that's enough for Zipman to really stand out.

That said, I like the character designs and some of the interactions. I think there's potential for the concept to fully grab me, so I hope it gets there.

time for a few more straggling series to go the way of the dinosaur.

Honestly, all that really needs to go is Tokyo Shinobi Squad and then the freed up slot from from the Dr. Stone spin-off ends, and we'll be able to have a 5-series serialization round if they so desired.

As for Zipman's first chapter, I found myself feeling quite bored and disinterested. If you pulled a couple of those pages and showed them to a random person who wasn't an avid fan of MHA and told them it was from a new chapter, I bet there'd be a lot of people who wouldn't bat an eye. I'll give it 2 more chapters, but if they give off the exact same feel as this one, that'll be as far as I continue with it. Maybe this could help keep Yozakura and Mitama afloat?

the MC really seemed like he was still in competition with his dead brother. It shook me the wrong way when he was trying to make his crush smile, but she ended smiling to news about his dead brother. And he’s just like “dammit......”.

My thoughts on Zipman:
It shows that we've truly reached an age where just to survive, the majority of newbies are forcing a shonen veneer as if that is what made the great shonens truly great. Mistaking the surface for what truly makes series shine.
In addition, the paneling and composition needs work, it shows that the author is still green.
Still, Jump needs all the assertive/confident MCs it can get, and the concept is fresh (in Jump). Also brother wearing brother is a newly acquired fetish. All in all the art is nice but as Shinpachi said, bad mangaka confused manga for just drawing good art so I hope the story and various other elements improve from here. I am moderately hopeful.

What is a "shonen veneer"? Shonen is just a demographic.

About Zipman, I agree that it was a solid debut. It will be interesting to see a tokusatsu series, which I guess most people will think that it's super hero stuff.

Not impressed by Zipman at all. I can probably already tell you how the story is gonna develop and how at the end of the day it is not gonna get anywhere but run in circles just like many other shounen.
Art was pretty tho and I’m a fan of mecha battles, so I’m gonna stick a little bit more to it to see if it’s actually something different, but I doubt it.

This is really interesting. Both possibilities here, if this is actually going to be a big batch, are things that haven't happened in Weekly Shonen Jump in a really long time.

Possibility 1: New series will debut during the #4-5 double issue and/or the #6-7 double issue that'll release over the holidays. We haven't had a series debut in a double issue since Naruto Side Story: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring in #22-23 2015, and that was a spin-off. The most recent full series to debut in a double issue is Bakuman in #37-38, 2008. That's over a decade ago.

Possibility 2: The batch will pause for the double issues, then resume with Issue #8. I've only been able to find one instance of this happening in the past, and it's all the way back in 2004. Death Note in #1, Gintama in #2, LIVE in #3, and then Steel Ball Run in #8 after the double issues. Something like that hasn't happened again in the past 16 years.

Other Possibilities: This is a two or three batch, and that's enough to constitute a "barrage" for Shonen Jump's marketing department. Or the holiday double issues start later than they did last year and this is a four batch that ends in a #4 solo issue.

All of these things are in the realm of possibility, but all of these possibilities are unusual and weird. We'll be able to narrow down some of those possibilities as soon as later this week, so that'll be exciting.

Enjoyed Zipman’s first chapter, can definitely see a lot of influence rather than from MHA, to Toku and Kamen Rider shows, like most said nothing to be overly amazed by, tho not bad for a debut chapter

MC is likable and liked his goal to be just protecting his crush’s smile, glad he isn’t just a Deku clone, if I may define his personality, guess I could say he is hot blooded, but not so much that it is his most definite trait, and can keep a cool head when it matters

The twist of the brother being the suit definitely didn’t saw coming, ~~now they’ll make stupid innuendos from that lmao~~

Overall a decent start, now to see how Shibata handles the story

May I also say it’s kinda interesting that after the whole debate about gay MCs and whether the current of rooster of MCs in Jump weren’t confirmed as straight, Zipman’s straight out tells he’s in love with a girl XD, not making fun just a remark

Oh, right. I'll take his pre-time-skip data and according to the wiki:

So he is, or better said was, the 2nd shortest male main character in current WSJ.

We got an update:
Haikyuu!! - Hinata (age 21): 170.2cm

He takes 5th place now. Not terribly impressive, but at least he's nowhere near the bottom anymore.

Zipman wasn't bad, but after the middle it go to fast for my taste.
But well, although first chapter are important, series like Jujutsu and World trigger didn't have a better first chapter.

Zipman: Honestly, I wish there was more to everything. I do like the artwork and the character designs for the major characters (especially Cheena) but I feel like there isn’t a lot to chew on here. I don’t want to say lacking yet, but I feel as if the characters, story, world, and fights were kind of basic, and there isn’t much else to say. I do like the fact that the MC just wants to makes his childhood crush smile, at least. I’m really hoping that we get more details in the immediate following chapters. It’s not bad, but it’s a weak opening chapter IMO.
Also, I get more FMA vibes than MHA vibes here, to be perfectly honest. I will say at times, the MC’s face reminds me of Tetsutetsu’s (steel boy from MHA).

It's clear the japanese ani twitter just loves to see BC fail. It by no means deserves to be ranked that low. And it's always being ranked low by tem recently. Yeah, barely anything happend last chapter but at least compared to other traditional timeskips BC's timeskip is actually going at a fast pace and getting right into things.

Problem too is the lack on pages, it's really hindering to buy a volume or magazine with barely content. I wish tabata health will soon be 100%
