Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Bleach and Soma weren't extended by profit, though? Like, at all?

Indeed, from what I've observed, there's no true cases of Jump "forcing" a mangaka to continue a series.
It doesn't matter, regardless of whether it is the jump or not that forces the author to extend the work. The manga is at its peak and continuing after all this can be very dangerous.

That never happened with Bleach. The entire story was planned from beginning to end he just never got to finish it properly so shhhhh
[/QUOTE]

The jump gave a lot of time for kubo to finish bleach in a decent way.
But he wrapped up with so much unnecessary stuff that the end of bleach looked like that, unfortunately.

Extending the manga is super easy, probably the easiest route is a time skip with the main characters older and as Hashiras and introduce a new threat or even make Muzan escape, Japan is so in love with the manga right now that i doubt readers would mind a new villain and time skip, the problem is that Koyoharu so far didn't make a single thing to show that the manga have more in the future, this is why is hard to see not ending
Even easier: insert a flashback arc. We still know very little about Tanjiro's parentage despite numerous hints being dropped.

Toriyama made it very clear that they didn't want him to end Dragon Ball even when he was sick of writing it. Of course he wasn't forced at gunpoint, but if even a mangaka who's already made it big feels so much pressure, imagine how hard it would be for a newcomer to refuse.

But in KNY's case, there is no such difference. The latest volumes are right up there with the first volumes. Meaning the number of readers who read the first volume have read these latest volumes. Whatever be the reason, it is so big that there has been no drop in readers in 19 volumes.
Or it means that some people started from the beginning and dropped out, while another group of people only started around where the anime ended.

Uh...no. Not really. For reference, I think you should read this.

Also, do remember that, while Bakuman is heavily steeped in Jump's internal culture, it's still prone to heavy amounts of dramatic license. Ohba/Obata freely exaggerate the importance of the survey rankings, editorial power, and other such factors in order to make the manga more interesting, so it's best not to take most things literally.
Why you're trying to lecture someone from 2012 about Bakuman not being "literal"? XD

The writer that extended Soma was so drunk af, he cared less and less about quality

Didn't they make Togashi extend Yu Yu Hakusho more than he wanted? And that's one of the reasons he can get away with his hiatus shenanigans?

Uh, yes, really. Have you read it yourself?

Baba saga: "Because of all the support I’m getting, it seems that I can’t end it at 10 volumes or so. Right now I’m enjoying drawing it pretty well too, so it looks like I’ll be able to put out more than 13 volumes one way or another”. This is the first explicit mention of Dragon Ball‘s run being extended due to its popularity.

Piccolo saga: "I worked on the series for almost 10 years. When I reached about the third year, I was really pushing my limit, but the original editors of Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan made me continue the story."

Saiyan saga: “Z is the last letter in the alphabet, right? So, at the time I already really wanted to end the series, and so I made the title ‘Z’ to say ‘Hey, this is the end!'”

Cell saga: If Toriyama had been given the option to end it there, he probably would have. (...) but there is simply no evidence that he actually thought he was going to be given that option while writing that storyline.

No, well from what I remeber learning was that they weren't letting him do the story how he wanted. He obviously wanted the 3 kings are to be longer and more fleshed out but I think after that he wanted to make an arc where he deconstructed the main characters (whatever that means :D) but the editors kept saying no so he said fuck it and quit and just rushed the last arc and ended it.

I'm sorry I don't have a source though that's what I remeber hearing.

Editorial pressure? Yes, that does exist, and Nakano has even professed to it, but forced? Nope, nada. And besides, Nakano has said he doesn't really do that anymore:

Also, do remember that, while Bakuman is heavily steeped in Jump's internal culture, it's still prone to heavy amounts of dramatic license. Ohba/Obata freely exaggerate the importance of the survey rankings, editorial power, and other such factors in order to make the manga more interesting, so it's best not to take most things literally.
Editorial pressure will exist even today. You can call it forced or unforced pressure. Doesn't matter. The outcome is the same. They have forced people in the past.

Also, do you really think the editor in chief, whose main role is to get series that will do what KNY is doing, has not probably asked either the series editor or the mangaka themself multiple times about whether or not KnY really should end at this moment?
They probably won't force a mangaka anymore to continue a series like in the past because it's the social media era and one bad PR incident can be deadly to them and their image of being respectful to their authors. But they most certainly will ask multiple times, suggest alternative routes for the story to go in and so forth. It's not forcing but it's still pressure all the same.

They are not wrong to do it either. It's what they need to do to get money for their company.

Also, no one will publicly state that "Yes we force authors to continue series despite their wishes". But their biggest mangaka Toriyama has stated multiple times how he was forced/made/told to continue.

What was the premise again? Something about gender bending was it?

Yeah... not sure about that premise for Agravity. I like the art/character designs at least.

Four guys have the duty of "restoring" humanity, and in order to do so have a drug which can turn one of them into a girl.

From the raws of the one-shot, it seems the guys try to pressure the short, feminine looking one into taking it because it be "weird" for them to do it.

You might see why this is a minefield of "Oh god no".
