Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Honestly he shouldve just titled the video "Best selling WSJ series of 2019" JJK surpassed Dr.Stone and BC a minute ago

25 mins of my life that I'm never getting back, that video was a whole lot of nothing imo, he barley even talked about the series and the current state of their manga outside of Chainsaw Man (his description for Act-Age was just terrible), the video should've just been called "Top 10 selling WSJ manga of 2019", not to mention the ending with Kimetsu Vs OP used severely outdated info "One Piece is still doubling Kimetsu's per volume sales and is still King" and it's not like he had the video 100% ready before KnY overtook OP, considering he used panels from chapters that released 2-3 weeks ago
It’s a whole lot of nothing for someone that’s part of this thread. He’s most likely not going to say anything interesting or new for someone who follows the magazine as closely as most people in this thread.

But to the average person doesn’t know anything about the magazine I can see this being a great video. For example he talks a lot about Mitama, and gives high praise to Act Age. The average western manga/anime fan has no clue what any series that doesn’t already have an anime is, especially a gag series like Mitama.

I could see this video being highly informal for someone who doesn’t follow the magazine closely, which is MOST ppl in the West, and could influence a lot of people to read some of the lesser known series. Don’t get the hate at all.
The video does exactly what he the title implies. Talks about what series are currently in Jump, talks about what’s doing well and what isn’t, and gives his personal opinion on each series

His video of Jump in 2018 was what got me into Jujutsu Kaisen, Dr Stone and Kimetsu no Yaiba in the first place. Before that, I wasn't exactly interested in the magazine as a whole, only my few favorites like MHA, Soma and One Piece. Just saying

So I noticed that it's still only February, and this ToC thread is almost at 500 pages. That's significantly above where the 2019 thread was at in February of 2019.

What is happening in WSJ that is causing so much discussion? Is it KnY? Certain series ending? Kubo possibly returning? A combination of each? If you guys want, you can list reasons for the discussion explosion.

Because as it stands, we could end up with 2k pages, depending on what ends up happening this year.
Maybe it's because WSJ is getting worldwide attention nowadays and because of it i found this thread

In regards to the explosion of the thread I can't speak with historical experience as a newcomer myself but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if the bigger access to the newbie series has increased interested in TOC data and sales data across the board. Speaking from my own experience, I would read the Jump starts and go "man I hope this makes it and Viz/some scan group picks it up down the line and then the series would flop. Actually being able to read at risk series probably makes people more invested and want to talk about them. Most people like and talk about Mitama in this thread, a series that almost certainly wouldn't have up to date scans to drive discussion.

Throwing in my two cents on the boom in interaction too, I think it's definitely the access to new series via Viz's Jump. When the new model started last year, I started reading every new series and first kept up with reddit TOC threads, then /a/ threads, then eventually found my way here. Also,
I'd hazard a guess that the death of Jaiminis/MB has driven some established series' fans to Viz, which has led them to check out more of the newbies and assumedly brought them here.

We discussed that previously, I believe. It's possible. It's one of those genres people didn't know they wanted, so now they're wanting more of it.
This makes Yozakura look more like a grifter and unable to stand on its own merits.

I wouldn't go that far. But the similarities between SxF were noted initially.

I've been reading the official chapters for years, I remember I starting reading because I liked the big new series, World Trigger, and Viz Jump was a few chapters ahead (I think it was at 14 chapters ahead at the time). But even reading the Jump starts they began doing, it was hard to care much about the new manga because viz only did 3 chapters and rarely picked up anything new. I might be interesting in what lives but without reading them, all that mattered to me is that whatever did succeed might get some scans.

But yeah, now that we have the ability to read all the new manga, I'm more interested in what survives. It's not just 'I hope someone picks up this new hit manga so I can read it', now I'm already reading everything not having to worry about it being dropped or falling behind, so what lives and doesn't matters more to me now.

I think having almost 2 full magazines to be discussed in here helps. Manga plus gives us 14 ongoing Jump+ series (Viz has the MHA spin-off for 15) which is only 4 less than we get via Jump and while they aren't discussed often stuff like SxF sales does get discussed here.
I agree with everyone on the full magazine being available in English (Yuuna through scans) caught up probably contributes as well. I think Magazine has most stuff in English although not a lot is caught up. Sunday and Champion have very little in English and even less caught up just to use the Weekly Shonen magazines for comparison.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Jujutsu's anime turns out because, while it's fun to read, for some reason I keep getting lost, like often I'll read a new chapter and feel like I skipped something.

Though speaking of anime, I'm also wondering if Kimetsu's insane success might overshadow newer series a little. When something's literally becoming more popular than One Piece it must be hard for newer stuff to get noticed.

Based on what metric? Literally all the series which failed did so because they were bad and/or did interest people enough to pick up the volumes.

Also, now that all the new series have had a few chapters, can we maybe get a poll on which people think is most likely to survive into 2021? Could maybe include S8 in there too, it might be longer than the others but it's not exactly giving the impression of being safe.

I mean new anime for established series rather than new manga. Like the upcoming Jujutsu, and the inevitable Act-age and Chainsawman later.

Usually 3-6 months before airing? If it's coming out this year (can't remember if that's been confirmed or not), we'll probably be getting something next month at the earliest, especially if the production is solid (this is kind of up in the air since it allegedly has a strong staff, but is being produced at MAPPA which isn't the best at scheduling productions).

Kimetsu's success is only overshadowing the rankings. It's not like people aren't going to check out newer series just because KnY's huge popularity.

I can do that tomorrow. I'm like on the verge of passing out currently. Super tired.
