Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

We get to witness that duel once again

As of February 16th
Code:
|212771(2)|372767|418994|443464|------┃------ (*44)┃2020/01/04|Haikyu!! 41
|156267(2)|312542|371446|409231|439604┃489817 (*44)┃2020/01/04|Spy x Family 3
Haikyu left the top 50 before SxF, but it should be around 480-485k (based on shoseki estimates), meaning that SxF passed it during the February 10th-February 16th week.

What do you all think? Will Spy x Family Vol. 4 open higher than Haikyu!! Vol. 43?

Not sure about opening higher but I think SxF would be ahead by the 2nd week.

I think HQ is more of a frontseller than SXF. To be honest, I'm actually more interested in how MHA, TPN, HQ and SXF will all fare since they are all pretty close with each other nowadays, especially MHA with TPN and SXF with HQ. We're also getting JJK and CSM and we'll see how much both of those have grown.

The thing I'm most curious about is how much the Dr Stone spin-off will sell, honestly.

How is the anime helping with stabilizing Haikyuu's sales?

Volume 41 sold way better than volume 40, volume 42 will give us a better idea on how much the anime is helping.

Yeah, I would have rather liked it if they just stayed rivals instead of a "friendship" where one guy is a ginormous jerk and the other can't drop fast enough to his knees to worship the very ground said jerk walked on. Like at least make Bakugo less of a freaking butt or give Deku enough grandstanding to say f u to Bakugo or something like that. But this whole "Bakugo is so great." or "Kacchan..." is just so weird and then reading this about Deku handing over All for One to Bakugo ´who a) hated that Deku got such a cheat code so why should he want it when he wants to become Nr.1 hero due his own power and b) Deku has yet to even fully control said quirk just feels wrong on all scales.
Wtf are you talking about lol, how is it weird that he admires Bakugo, he’s been doing it since he wasa kid... Why would Deku say fuck you to Bakugo he’s written in a way where he understands Bakugos personality and knows he’s just a competitive dude with a temper, whatever beef they had before was squandered.

Right, that's why the first chapter starts with Bakugo beating the shit out of little Deku, using his power to make it hurt some more. That's why he was the mouthpiece of the class ridiculing Deku's dream of becoming a hero. That's why he BOOM'ed up his research notes and threw them outta the window. That's why he gave him some time-saving advise of taking a swan dive off the roof to get a quirk in his next life! Yeah, real awesome friendship between those two, very believable, it's just competition complex coupled with a bit hot temperament, nothing else like say being a narcissistic bully who enjoys tormenting those weaker than him.
Being a hero is more than just power and the will to be the best, you gotta look out for others, be kind to those who need you and uphold justice with your life, at least that's how Deku wants to be a hero like, so Kacchan is pretty far from his ideal hero type, so yes, it is weird that he admires Bakugo given their past and what type of person Bakugo is like.

In my boredom I'm doing the top-3 of Jump ToC per year. Is amazing how many Hiroshi Motomiya manga were in top-3 in 70s and 80s.

An analysis for that ToC video and something I noticed about Kimetsu No Yaiba's underperformance pre-anime:

Fuma no Kojiro, Tenchi wo Kurau, Bobobo, Eyeshield 21, are all series that got to rank in the top 5 places of Jump for periods of time and all were short-ish series (well except Eyeshield 21) but I'm trying to make a comparison with Kimetsu No Yaiba.

This is because (and this surprises me, since I probably never paid close attention to it)Kimetsu No Yaiba constantly ranked in top 5 ever since its 2nd year! (From September 2017, which is more accurately when Kimetsu was 1 year and a half: 19 months).
In fact it never got lower than 6th place after it's 1st and half year (A feat that no other manga besides One Piece achieved, Dr. Stone and The Promised Neverland fell to 6th place or lower a couple of weeks from a quick glance in the video), constantly ranking 4th or better!

Now I'm gonna compare it to the previous manga I mentioned, which are also manga that ranked 5th place or better for some time but weren't super-duper sellers (Like Idk Shaman King, Naruto, Prince of Tennis which were Million Sellers).

Fuma no Kojiro: sold 4.5 million with 10 volumes. Average of 450,000 copies per volume
Tenchi wo Kurau: sadly I don't have sales data*
Bobobo: sold 7'000,000 with 21 volumes. Average of 333,333 copies per volume
Eyeshield 21: sold 20'000,000 with 37 volumes. Average of 540,000 copies per volume

As I said these are some of the "lower selling" manga that ranked well in the TOC. What I'm trying to get to is that Kimetsu No Yaiba sold around 120k pre-anime, which for a manga that ranked so well in the TOC is very, very, very low! As you can see these manga which were good rankers and are the "lowest sellers that achieved great ToC rankings" sold around half a million per volume.

So basically Kimetsu No Yaiba was underperforming in sales BY A LOT, for comparison other manga that had ranked very well in the TOC were Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Takeshi, Prince of Tennis, of course, if the title was long like Prince of tennis a decline in TOC ranking was usually the case.

But all those titles were million sellers.. So, and this is just my theory.. Maybe something prevented Kimetsu No Yaiba from selling like hotcakes, my guess is that it was probably the art, it looks kinda old, but once the anime adaptation started and got people hooked it sold like it should have (In fact it being undersold probably helped it in the long run since sooooooooooo many people that hadn't bought it started buying it on mass).

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

*BTW Tenchi wo kurau is an interesting case, because I couldn't find sales date about it.. Apparently it was super popular since its very beginning (Check the video it ran from 1983-1984 and at its start had 1-2 ranks then slightly dropped to 3-4ish ranks) but the author decided to end it on volume 7
Here's the wikipedia entry for the series, I used google translate and that's what I got from it, but if someone knows Japanese it would be cool if they could translate

@Mankichi Togawa:
Ey, it's funny I hadn't seen your post and you mentioned Hiroshi Motomiya manga and I was interested on finding more about Tenchi Wo Kurau.. Do you happen to know anything about it?? It ranked well in the TOCs, but from what I could understand in the wiki article it was apparently cancelled by Jump due to the TOC results... But then it was revealed by Motomiya that it was actually his decision to end it??

Ok done. I'm very sure I've commited some mistakes, but whatever.

Funny how Jojo was always mid-tier in ToCs

EDIT: @perroloco I should investigate more. Besides Tenchi wo Kurau, we have Sawayaka Montaro, Geki! Gokutora Ikka, or Obora Ichidai, all titles by Motomiya too

Thanks for sharing.

Takeshi never made it? I remember seeing it in the top 3 quite a lot.

Edit: Nvm I see it in 98'
