Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Looking at MHA's success in America, along with previous hits like Dragon Ball and Naruto, it made me wonder, why exactly did these take off, and why didn't things like One Piece take off there?

The superhero genre is an industry in North America, it was inevitable that MHA will catch on.
Dragon ball and Naruto probably for being the gate way anime for a lot of anime fans in the 90s and 2000s respectively

For one piece, here is Tv Tropes take on it:
  • One Piece as a whole has not gained as much mainstream popularity in the US compared to its contemporaries Bleach and Naruto. Its Western-styled animation and pirate theme turn off its target Shounen audience in the West, who are more interested in anime shows with Japanese concepts like ninjas and samurais. The terrible dub by 4Kids didn't help matters either. Unfortunately, even marketing the show to adults, who would be interested in Western-styled anime like Cowboy Bebop, and giving it a much better dub by Funimation didn't help it with mainstream audiences as it lacked the ratings to stay on Toonami. The manga, however, has a huge following among hardcore western manga fans.

More reprints for Kimetsu no Yaiba scheduled

April 9 Kimetsu no Yaiba Official Fanbook
April 22 Kimetsu no Yaiba Vol 1-9
April 23 Kimetsu no Yaiba Vol 10-19
60 million in a year looking even more possible. Volume 20 will probably be released at 50 million in circulation.

It was at 40 mln in circulation in january, with volume 20 coming out in may I'll be absolutely surprised if it's not 60mln circulation by then.

Oh yeah, right. But even so. It got something like 3 full series reprints in between and is going to get 3 more before volume 20 comes out. No way it only gets +10mln by then, I think.

I think One Piece was just too goofy for kids coming out of the 90s when dark and edgy stuff was popular.
Naruto and Bleach do have similar tones
OP have a goofy artstyle and overall plot so it never was similar with those two in this regard.
The west already is full of goofy cartoons, so I can see why OP would just blend in with those and not stand out with kids.
Nowadays I believe the biggest roadblock to western growth is its sheer size that discourage anyone thinking about getting into it.

Nowadays One Piece is known as the anime where people say "It hasn't ended yet?" and it looks like a maga that gained fame (or infamy?) from it's length, ironic because it got longer because it is good

That's my take

Lmao, Conan is much older than One Piece and more synonymous with "for god's sake just end already".

When did we last get real people on the cover? I think we've had a couple OP covers about real people, but I don't remember if they photos or drawn pictures of them.

Most likely the Gintama Live Action cover with all the three versions of Gintoki (Anime, Manga and LA).

Yep, the last one was that. Issue 38-2018
