Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

A slice of life with that art? Pfft. That's a no thanks from me, even though no one asked 🙃🤷🏾‍♂️
What's the problem with Kimetsu art? Even in the beggining that people called it bad, it never failed in being absolute expressive (For both comedic and dramatic situations), and ever since then, Gotouge has improved a lot. Kimetsu has both good moments of over the top comedy and comfy things, so I honestly don't see how a SOL would go so wrong.

Never understood why people complained and still complaining about the art. Croc has definitely gotten better with the drawing, also I find it has its own charm and it's very unique.

I like how Ufotable highlighted the brush strokes she makes on the lineart of every character.

That's very true, but have you actually read Fire Punch? A lot of it's content is... dark, for lack of a better word. Chainsaw Man gets away with a lot, but Fire Punch is almost a hundred times more upsetting in certain places, not something that could exist in a children's magazine without heavy changes to the story. Jump+ was the perfect place for it. Fujimoto probably had a lot more freedom due to the looser content restrictions. That's the reason Fire Punch is what it is.
well as a connaisseur of the stepbro genre on the hub i disagree /s

Have a question, it says in the third-last chapter of Hungry Joker that there was a reprint (and also the typical "rave reviews"), but then how come it got cancelled literally two chapters later? It's weird too because starting from this chapter (22), it seemed to be heading towards the final climax anyway, but what a weird bit of advertising. What do you guys think about it?

WSJ cares more about ToC votes than sales, high sellers have been cancelled in the past in favour of a series that sells less but does better on the ToC.

Although sometimes WSJ's just makes confusing marketing decisions, like how Horikoshi's previous series, Sensei no Bulge (or whatever they called it), got a colour page on ch 10 'as thanks for the popularity' but was clearly not very popular and got cancelled by ch 16.

I know why people complained before. They didn't like the artstyle of the manga and thought it was bad, even though it fitting for are a series that takes place in the Taisho period of Japan. It wasn't even a critique lol. Anyway, it was much harder to convince people to read it back before the anime was even announced.

Kimetsu no Yaiba's art at first while not bad did have quite a rough feel to it.

Gotouge's even talked about it before, I remember an author comment (or maybe a volume comment?) soon after the anime got announced that said something like "My art's the type that falls apart if you blow on it a little".

Still, making a reprint for a chapter 2 weeks before axe seems really bizarre.

WSJ still wants to profit from cancelled series. Most manga don't just suddenly stop existing when they get cancelled, they usually still have a volume or two to release after the end. If enough people are still willing to buy it why not print more?

fire punch has ton of shocking stuffs in it and was a mainstay at opts for a while, due to how crazy those pages are out of context (and in context as well).
that shit won't fly in the most mainstream magazine

I also read the speedscan of the latest Chainsaw Man chapter, and I'm convinced Fujimoto is on some really powerful drugs, lol.

Seriously, I can't recall a Jump series with such outright bizarre imagery. It's like an acid trip at certain points.

While we're on the subject, what other WSJ series would you all say was just outright weird with the imagery/art?

Jojo and Medaka Box had their moments. I remember Soul Catchers having some odd musical imagery in ch 1 but I never read past that. Also not WSJ but the series the Medaka Box duo went on to do in Jump Square though, Shounen Shoujo, was pretty much exclusively about going as crazy as possible with the imagery and metaphors.

But, of course, the winner of weirdest imagery is without a doubt Chinyuki, it got cancelled eventually because it was so weird and disturbing.

I have to say Gotouge. This panel especially is very weird and askes some tough philosophical questions that can screw with your head

That's pobably right about Gotouge's art. Interestingly though, a while back Gotouge drew a Fate tribute art starring Saber and Rin, and I can't help but think how well-suited the artstyle was for them. I'm starting to believe that the artstyle is actually more suited for a western fantasy rather than a traditional Japanese fantasy.

So if Gotouge wants to do a new series, I think it should definitely be a western fantasy.

Kimetsu's art was always good. I never understood the complaints it got. It's unique and definitely stands out.

Not sure I agree. Early on it definitely had a very lazy feel to it. Like, yeah, it was unique, but I'm not sure unique is necessarily good in this case.

The art definitely got a lot better, though.

I completely forgot about their Fate art lol, they definitely knocked out of the park with it.
If he decides to switch genre, like to something more lighthearted compared to Kimetsu, if adjusted a bit, then the artstyle will fit right in

regarding a hypothetical comedy slice of life manga from wani:

while i am a big fan of the comedic and slice of life moments in the manga, i think they work so well because of their contrast with the darker, action packed battle arcs. they act as a much needed relief from the heavier content. especially since many of the characters are usually serious, stoic types (which makes sense considering the premise of the story), so seeing them in fun lighthearted situations make them much more likable. im not sure if a full comedy slice of life series from wani would be as enjoyable, especially since it won't have the characters from kny that we already know and love, but i wouldn't particularly mind if they went that route.

personally, i would much prefer to see wani stick around with the kny verse for a while because there's so much more that could be done with the characters. i still firmly believe the series is ending too soon. i think wani should do some miniseries or spinoff's about some of the pillars. or they could do some 4-koma stuff and maybe have that as the dedicated back of the magazine slot lol. maybe even more stuff set in the kimetsu gakuen verse. those special 4-koma wani drew a few times were pretty cute and funny.

if they went with a new series, i would really like to see a spokon, or even another battle manga like fantasy adventure. something where wani's fun character writing can really shine through.

Pretty much anything from Shimabu. Toriko had a bunch of it
