Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

So how does Shoseki work? What classifies as a good ranking for new series?

For the opposite situation, what are some series that started off really bad but you found got better later on? Black Clover stands out for me. I found early on the series to be nearly insufferable and reading as if it was a parody of bad battle shonen. Really found the series got much better as it went along though, and now is one my favorite currently running series.
Best example in recent times is Double Taisei. The first 1/3 of the series was quite bad and filled with confusing, unnecessarily complicated drama. However, the last 2/3 of the series was simply brilliant. It's a shame the Tendo Era couldn't have happened by chapter 3 at the latest in order to save the series. The artwork was superb; Saotome was a babe; and Haga was one of the greatest characters to grace the pages of WSJ.

Mitama Security and Act-Age didn't have the strongest starts either (their first couple chapters were just ok), but they were both able to turn things around more quickly than Double Taisei did.
Preview of Issue #20 (HQ)

Not sure if it's just the promotional art, but it looks like Spring Weapon author's artwork has improved since his previous serialization. It'll be quite interesting to see how this series does, especially to see how it stacks up against the other gag series.

What's that crudely-drawn giraffe thing, a oneshot?

Shoseki Daily Ranking - 4/4

#1 One Piece 96
#3 Black Clover 24
#4 Dr. Stone 15
#7 We Never Learn 16
#13 Yuuna and the Haunted Hotsprings 21
#63 Mission: Yozakura Family 1
#65 Undead Unluck 1
#82 Agravity Boys 1
#301 Zipman 1
Not bad for any of the new series. I'm guessing we'll see a reprint for Undead Unluck in about a week, and maybe Agravity will get one too within the week after.

I feel like it more so has to do with a series growth, the expectations editorial has for a series, and how much they invested into a series.

Even though RxL and S8 sold much more than a lot of usual axed series, editorial likely had higher expectations for each series. They also invested a lot more promo into both series than they typically do for newcomer mangaka. Maybe the return didn’t justify what they spent in promo. And the lack of growth per volume didn’t inspire much hope.

However, I highly doubt they’d cancel a series that’s doing very well sales wise even if it wasn’t doing well in the TOC. And besides they create the TOC themselves, which isn’t entirely based on reader votes.
If all of the new series are doing well something obviously has to be on the bottom
Depends really. Samon I think went through a simmilar thing. Even though Shun Numa isn't a household name with a big hit to his name, Jump still pushed Samon for some reason. Only for them to realize that their efforts didn't really pay off as volume sales weren't that hot. So this could happen to newbies as well.

Wasn't Yozakura's hold surprisingly good last time too? Interesting that it holds up so well despite starting behind. Black clover also goes back on top of stone. I guess it'll be pretty close.

I wonder if they'll give it 2.5million right off the bat this time or just stop at 2 million. 2.5 million would tie it with Slam Dunk as the 2nd highest first print for WSJ all time.

They will probably give 2 million to volume 20 first print since they still want to capitalize on the buzz and keep making reprints. If anything, we'll probably see the 2.5 million first print with volume 21. As for Yozakura, volume 2 fell less positions than volume 1.

Volume 1

40 -> 60 -> 69

Volume 2

47 -> 63 -> ?

With the recent announcement from a handful of hours ago stating that Abe is likely to declare a state of emergency over COVID-19 within the next couple days, I'm guessing this will finally start to show an impact on the physical sales that we traditionally track on Shoseki, Honto, etc. I'd hope that people would shift to digital purchases in order to support the authors rather than not purchase anything at all, but we wouldn't be able to see the sales data from the digital unless they specifically reveal it to us.

If they start to do lockdowns and quarantining similar to what has been going on in other countries, do you think we'd still be getting new issues? It'd be harder to get readers to buy physical copies, but digital is still an option

For series that had a fall from grace that I loved initially, I would pick Beelzebub. It wasn’t as bad as the other aforementioned such as Shokugeki but it was still disappointing to see a manga that was once my most eagerly anticipated weekly read turn into such a mess. The comedy and gags went downhill after the Furuichi arc and everything with the return to Ishiyama just felt rushed, lacking in good storytelling, and wasted potential. Big shot villains getting defeated in the same arc they were introduced, side cast getting shafted, forgotten plot details, and ideas and powerups that went nowhere were some of my main gripes with the latter half of the series.

I’m still hoping Tamura can come back with the same magic that was early Beelzebub, but I would have loved just a romcom that had nothing to do with delinquents or action.

I'm assuming it means My hero has sold 5million in the US? That's A LOT! Like seriously..

For example BLEACH had sold 1.2 millions in the US alone by 2007 (and 52 millions worldwide).. don't know about other manga sales in the US to compare it.

Does anyone know Naruto or DB manga sales in the US? I think maybe HeroAca has sold more than Naruto in the US in that time period?
MHA is currently the best selling manga in the US and manga in the US is a growing market and much bigger than it was 10 years ago, so...although that's print, not sales, which are probably a bit lower, but it's about where I would expect it to stand. Also worth noting that this probably includes the other territories where VIZ publishes, such as canada and the UK, like another user pointed out.

Kimetsu was so cool, I don't think it will last for much longer, but this is great !

Undead Unluck continues to nail it !

Agravity Boys was super funny this week too, hopefully it will survive for a bit.

Zipman : Bye Bye

GoTW : Fill kinda blank to be honest

Mitama : Funny chapter too

Yozakura Family : Cool chapter but not much to say about it.

Chainsawman : What kinf of madness is that?

I recall Naruto being 1.8 at 23 volumes, or something like that

I really liked that new oneshot (even though I can't understand Japanese). It has everything I like about manga: guys with swords, girls with swords, guys with GLASSES with swords, guys with big swords............... did I mention swords⚔⚔

Hope it becomes a full series one day.

I have volume 22 of Naruto here in my hands, and the tag line on the back reads "the smash-hit manga that's sold more than 2.2 million books in the U.S.A.!" Bear in mind this is the second printing of volume 22, but it was printed the same month as the first printing, so I'd say it's fairly accurate.

PM Abe to declare State of Emergency

From what little information we have, I don't think it will have much of an effect on releases, but it's worth sharing here to inform everyone in case. Sorry if I sound like I'm doomposting, but I think it warrants to be too important to not share.

That said, Sasaki's earlier tweet is somewhat reassuring, I guess.

It actually could affect the magazine releases, at least in print.

Not really? I doubt they'd close down basic groceries stores like Lawsons, and those things are everywhere in Japan.
