Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Mashima has discredited this monstrous work output. Thanks to digital art, he only draw like 4-5 days per week. Oda on the other hand for example doesn't go digital, he hates it.
I have to wonder if Oda's insane stubbornness regarding digital will persist with the current world situation.

Can't wait for people to dismiss this, then blame npc and fujo.
Oh well, One Piece will remain "only" the best-selling manga record in history and the Guiness World Record for a single author's comic book.

I don't think Oda will cry too much over it, let's say.

Maybe some fans will cry given that there has been so much animosity in recent months on reddit and forums, but that's how life is.

I would say there is no complain and everyone is happy.

One Piece spoilers are already out.
Out because the summary leaked by the TLer who does the chapter at Viz apparently. Japan wise, still nothing.

Nah I doubt digital art was the reason Mashima once put out double chapters for fours weeks on a row. Even before going digital his work ethics was impressive.
Yeah. Even going digital, who the hell posts weekly sketches, chapters and finish a Final Fantasy game under 36 hours all in the same week!!??? (Speaking of which, has Mashima said anything about the FFVII Remake and if he's playing it?)

@Mods, @Buranchi, last post on this matter, I swear.

probably he can't since he apparrently broke his PS4 controller playing animal crossing (yes)

to try stay in topic of thread,
Saying Oda Hate digital is a strong statement and is projecting,

Oda does a quite a number of digital arts, probably not in the chapters (though who to say later part by assistants aren't facilitated by digitals, and the fact that lettering are done digitally, but that is semantics)

back on track.
he likely doesn't do digital art in the chapters, but some of the covers and Color pages are done digitally as evident by the videos shared by the edtiorial)

my point is, don't project,

He pretty much made a comment on it himself.

Thanks to our 11Doc btw.

3 days off is a lot. Oda only gets one because he is too stubborn.

Yeah I don't understand why he sticks to normal drawing. Digital would mean that he'd get to take more rest than he does now.

Oda for his manga hates digital yes. Hence why there's never been a case of it in his manga outside some color pages. I mean when he brings up scenes from hundreds of chapters ago, he prefers to redraw them completely instead of just copy pasting the panels like nearly everyone does.

Doing art digitally does not mean it is automatically faster. Just because Mashima finds it faster does not automatically mean Oda would be faster with digital too.

Doubt talented artists like Oda or others, would have problems moving to digital. I'm pretty sure Oda has said he wants his manga to remain as handcrafted as possible. Oda is pretty much "my way or the highway" type of guy. Helped him succeed but sometimes it isn't at all helpful.

I am really glad that Demon Slayer has achieved this historical record. I really don't know what he is missing, because he has already practically achieved everything.
Breaking barriers with history, charisma, characters, background and fights:

I hope the new manga has a chance to shine after the anime. I look at you Jujtsu Kaisen.

I didn't say anything about "problems" though. Oda can have no problems with the digital work process at all and his drawing time can still be more or less as it is now.

Digital art doesn't necessarily mean shorter work times. It's just more convenient with the ability to quickly correct and undo errors. So if the artist is one who tends to do many corrections to their art as they are drawing, then yeah, digital might help a bit in reducing time.

That said, there are artists who are a lot faster on paper than digital because they don't like how digital feels. It really depends and is not a simple straightforward answer.

For all we know Oda is doing One Piece digitally, no? I mean reading thru posts apparently Oda hates digital... I didn't know.. some of his color pages appear kinda like digital coloring to me (and I'm talking old color pages, like from 10 years ago).

Also lots of manga is done digitally, and it's not like it looks different or anything.. for example Hiroyuki Takei's new Shaman King series are done digitally..

Kohji Kumeta (Sayonara Setzubou Sensei) said in one of the first volumes of Katte no Kaizo he had been working digitally for a couple of months (keep in mind that volume was released in the 90s!).

Even Kurumada Is doing the new Saint Seiya digitally, I think, basing on the coloring because it looks super digital lol.
(which is a shame I think since his traditional coloring has a "old 80s" manga charm to it, which is totally lost with digital).

Edit: I just remembered Toriyama, he probably has been working digitally since around 2002-2003-ish, at least the kanzenban covers for DB and Arale look super digital, what do you guys think?

In this YouTube video behind the scenes of Jump editorial from 2017, they showed two original One Piece color drawings, where you can see the color ink having bled through the paper while drawing, so they were not drawn digitally.

There is also this post in the AP forum: http://forums.arlongpark.net/showthread.php?t=43241&page=215&p=3951558&viewfull=1#post3951558

I ask because of this Twitter video of the cover process for Vol. 91. You've might have already seen it.

Oda's art still has varying line widths and little ink dab pools at the end of lines that you only get from physical inking. It's lacking a lot of the telltale signs of digital inking like super consistent line widths and a built in whispy quality to the line. However much he's doing digitially, it's not 100%.

At a guess, I'd say he's probably switched to digital for doing layouts, especially for complicated group cover shots like that, because it's way easier to resize and adjust things... but he then probably prints that layout and then inks over it traditionally. Hence the reason that video stopped at the layout stage instead of going on to show more refined line art.

And his coloring is definitely still traditional, you can't get that particular quality in photoshop without crazy amounts of extra work ad texture drops.

like most things, there are not straight answers,

he could do the line art and coloring analog,

he could do both processes differently depending on what he wanted to do.

I'm going to blame the npc's and the fujo's for not buying enough Samon in it's time of need.

So these were all drawn by Oda digitally then or were they done by one of his assistants?
