Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

That's actually a pretty good deal, can already see the chaos that it will cause though...

PM Abe: Gotouge and Shueisha, stop. We have to practice social distancing. Stop enticing your rabid readerbase to gather en masse.
Shueisha: Hah, hah. Money printer goes brzz brzz

Does anyone know if Demon’s Slayer’s success impacted the sales of the magazine itself in any way

With Covid-19 happening? If Kimetsu ends up being the reason a second wave happens in Japan, then someone's head at Shueisha is gonna roll.

If it did, we probably would've heard it by now.

The boost potentially continuing over to 2021 is a scary thought since the final volume comes out in December. It's already boring seeing the same thing over and over again.

LTD yes

for the 2020 oricon year,
Volumes 1 through 18 are sold roughly the same, but why is there such a big gap with volume 19?

circulation continues to fall

2018 yearly avg was 1,746,522 (Shuiesha official statement was 1.74M, -5.836% YoY)

note: physical only

to count digital is a bit hard

just as a note: as a whole, digital manga magazine was only 4.5% in comparison to physical manga magazines in 2018 (no breakdown was given in 2019, but trend suggest no higher than 5%)

again that is as a whole and not for any specific magazines, also the fact that some mags are physical only and some are digital exlusive

Welcome to the 3M club.
What are the series that have achieved this? Besides of OP.
Gonna list the series that are close to or achieved 3'000,000 all info from this video:
Death Note: is probably gonna get there eventually (It had 30million with only 12 volumes 13 volumes and that was information from 2015, I can only assume maybe it's grown a bit over 5 years). Plus is a classic. Plus is a "short" read. Plus it has an interesting concept. I definitely think it will be one of those stories that will continue to sell for a long, long time.

Dr. Slump: had 35'000,000 with 18 volumes (So around 2mill per volume), this info is from 2008, so again 12 years have passed it likely has gained a couple million sales, but I guess it still hasn't reached 3mill per volume.. Maybe it never will? Who knows. contains pocket edition and deluxe.

Yu Yu Haksuho: has sold 50mill with 19 volumes (Average 2.6 mill) and this data is from 2014 so it's probably getting to 3mill soonish (IIRC it was released in Bunkoban format after 2014... I think, not sure, but if so it probably boosted the series sales by a bit more.

Honorable mentions:

Naruto:
140mill with 72 volumes (So around 2mil average, Info from 2015), it's probably gonna reach 3mill per volume in its lifetime I guess.
From may 2019 : 153 000 000 for 73 volumes (72 + gaiden)

Dragon Quest Dai No Daiboken: So this is a very special case because this manga has 50million in sales with 37 volumes BUT the last time we got info on this one is 2005 (Again all this is info I got from easylove's video) so the info is not updated, I think if this info is correct it has probably sold an extra 10million?? Is that fair to say?? This is just my speculation of course.
Anyways Dai No Daiboken is also getting a (Hopefully full) remake this year which is gonna lead to a re-edition (Hopefully a kanzenban, pretty please Shueisha! I love color pages from the 80s/90s) AND it's a very popular series outside Japan too, so obviously it's gonna get licensed worldwide so it's gonna increase it's total sales (In fact this has been probably the most requested manga for the Spain community for the last.. decade maybe? I think Spaniards here can confirm it, the publisher over there has basically been blue balling them for like 5 years licensing every damn Dragon Quest manga BUT Dai no Daiboken haha).

What I'm trying to say, DQ DnD currently should be at around 60ish maybe 70ish mill.. And the remake is probably gonna make it sell more and I know these are lots of stretches and it's pretty unlikely DQ DnD will ever reach the 3mill per volume but I think depending on all these factors it seems doable.

And now the series that have sold 3mill or more average per volume:

Hokuto No Ken
100 million with only 27 volumes (Info from 2015 btw so it has sold more probably)
(its 60 000 000 for Japan (including all editions). 100 000 000 its world numbers. )

Slam Dunk 121 million with 32 volumes (info from 2014 so I assume it must be at around 130mill right now or even more since it had a reprint in a new format a couple of years ago), more info below.*

Dragon Ball I'm not completely sure of DB's sales... Outside or Inside of Japan, or global sales.. EasyLove's video has it at 160million, this article of compress from 2008 has it at 150million, IIRC DB's worldwide sales are 300million.
Anyways if we go with Japan-only numbers: 160mill (Probably more now), 42 volumes, average of 4million-ish per volume
If we go global sales it's reportedly 300million, with 42 volumes that would be 7.1 million average per volume.
World numbers is 250 000 000 (november 2018). The 160,000,000 figure logically includes the deluxe edition figures (20,000,000). So we would be 140,000,000 for the 42 volumes.

One Piece Easylove's video had it at 362million (Thru volume 87), so diving 362mill/87= 4.1million-ish per volume.
One Piece : its 390 000 000 for 95 volumes (in Japan).
Global sales are 470 million copies with 96 volumes so 4.8million per volume.

Edit: Underlined info was provided by @Heiji, thanks for your corrections :)
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Now something very important to consider is these are all series that have reached these numbers after decades of being published (So selling backlog for years and years) AND Kimetsu is not gonna stay at 3 million as much as I hate it lol.

If I were to venture a guess.. Maybe only One Piece and Dragon Ball reached a 3 milion average per volume during their first 5 years.. Maybe Slam Dunk too? I mean there must be a reason why Slam Dunk had the record for most printed 1st printing of a volume before One Piece broke it.. Idk.

For example Slam Dunk had sold 100 million by 2004 (As in.. It took Slam Dunk 14 years to get to 100million sales, which is pretty much 3 million average per volume) and then in 2012 it was reported it had sold 118 million.. And 121 minion by 2014..

And Kimetsu reached the equivalent of Slam Dunk's 100 million (3 million average) in the span of .. what? 5 years?

Maybe Kimetsu is one of those things that has reached most of its audience, but I still think its short length will definitely make it a "shonen classic" and a "must read for shonen fans" (Akin to Yu Yu Hakusho in a lot of ways, I think). so it will continue to sell in the long run too.

Thanks @Heiji , I'll edit my post to correct the info :)

So umm.. has anyone read the newest One Piece chapter?

I remembered the Coronavirus update Oda wrote and... I just wanted to see if anyone else noticed that Oda definitely didn't get as much help from his assistants in this chapter.. or is it just me? I got like a major "Oda kinda rushed a bit" vibe from this chapter. Or was it just me..?

What I'm saying isthat there are for example a lot of "blanks" were there should be backgrounds and stuff like that, stuff I imagine assistants would draw. There are also a lot of "lines" I don't know how to call them but like you know the typical manga lines in panels instead of backgrounds.

In my opinion the problem is that Oda is still in the old mangaka school, and he is not very digital.

Please can anyone tell me when volume 20 of KnY is gonna be released in Japan? I'm seeing May 13 on the wiki but I thought Shueisha had delayed all May volumes due to the State of Emergency? Is that no more the case?

May 13th is already the delayed date, the volume was going to be released on May 1st.

Holy god.

PD: In Shonen Jump history, Saint Seiya is the manga that shocks me the most in sales terms. It is regarded as one of the most important Jump manga ever, Shueisha treats it like a very legendary hit. But then you see it only sold 25 million copies in Japan and 35 million copies worldwide. I mean, you see Saint Seiya legacy and you would be expecting at least 60 million copies, not 25.

That's because Seiya was only around during the early to mid-80s, right? At that point, anime and manga had yet to make a splash overseas, and the series was probably only known to a few niche circles in the western hemisphere, except for maybe France, unlike the latinos and a few pockets around Asia. The worldwide anime and manga boom only started during the mid-90s and early 00s. DB, Pokémon, and Sailor Moon suddenly exploded at that time, (which ironically, DB had already wrapped up its serialization by that time. The anime was still running in Japan, if I recall).

But precisely all the mid-80s manga got colossal numbers. Kinnikuman, Captain Tsubasa and Hokuto no Ken are +60 million copies. I think Sakigake Otokojuku is in 30 million sales too. Lastly, I think City Hunter is in at least 50 million copies.

And unlike Saint Seiya (and Captain Tsubasa), Kinnikuman for example didn't make a splash overseas. Hokuto no Ken splash was also smaller than Saint Seiya. Same for City Hunter (being France the exception).

I also recall Saint Seiya got the faster anime adaptation in Shonen Jump history. Manga started in early 1986 and anime started in late 1986. The only other Jump manga I can think it got a fast anime adaptation was HxH.

Saint Seiya ran in WSJ from the mid 80s to the early 90s iirc. That coincided with the anime boom in pretty much every country but the anglo-speaking countries, there were 3 titles that were pretty much staples of 90% of an entire generation of childhood worldwide: Captain Tsubasa AKA Oliver & Benji AKA Super Campeones, Saint Seiya AKA Caballeros del Zodiaco and Dragon Ball.

And yeah Seiya is pretty much the most recognizable anime character worldwide after Goku and Pikachu I'd say. And I'm not even joking, there's an entire generation of 30 somethings worldwide that know who Seiya is... I'd guess there's even some old people that know who Seiya and Goku are but probably don't know who Pikachu is (Because their kids grew watching DB and SS, but not Pokemon).

Btw do you know why this happened? why these animes were all over different non ango-speaking countries? Why the anime boom didn't start until the late 90s in USA?

It's because these "Japanese cartoons" used to be sold for super duper low prices in cartoon fairs, Toei would go to them, and getting some money was better than getting none so they were selling their shows for pretty damn cheap to international broadcasters.. and the rest is history.

Also just as an extra funny bit my friends and I used to call Oliver Atom (Tsubasa Ozora, Captain Tsubasa's main character) Oliver gatom (A portmanteau of Oliver and Verga, slang for dick in Spanish).

You are forgetting that Jump manga about different Japanese prefectures, I think it got announced in like.. Idk but super fast.

Yeah I guess Saint Seiya is one of those franchise where the anime is so much better than the manga that.. You just watch the anime (BTW guys if you haven't you owe it to yourselves to watch it, it's on Netflix).

Also it's kinda weird how Saint Seiya gets lots of adaptations, just like @Mankichi Togawa mentioned there are plenty of manga that have sold way better than SS and still SS is a property that has gotten at least some sort of adaptation every 2 years, like.. Why not DB or Slam Dunk..

Something else of interest, Saint Seiya the Legend of Sanctuary box office.

Super interesting that Mexico surpassed Japan because we have similar stats (both are 126 million population) but the prices here are way cheaper, like I bought a ticket for the equivalent of around $3 USD while in Japan, at least when I went prices were around $18 to enter a movie... Maybe there are cheaper theaters there idk.
