Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

It is, actually. Kingdom still has a volume to release this year + the backlog, so the only way for One Piece to catch up is by a miracle.
Yep, I said this a couple weeks back, but with OP not even charting on monthly for july, it's almost guaranteed that Kingdom will take 2nd. It's not about the 1mln gap (which OP will close with the difference in new volumes), but rather in how much stronger Kingdom's backlog is compared to OP's this year. I just hope this won't turn into "OP vs KnY 2: electric boogaloo" just with kingdom instead, we really don't need to go through that again.

It was inevitable that something will overtake OP in the yearly sales. The declines every year and now with reduced number of volumes made it a reachable target.
OP's legacy is still intact and will always be. So people really don't need to start getting insecure over this.
This exactly. OP has been slowly creeping towards the average number for 2nd place for quite a while now. Although I expect 2021 to be a big year for One Piece, with the series hitting two important milestones (1000 chapters and 100 volumes), it being first is no longer a guarantee, and 2018 might very well have been the last time it happens unless it gets another boost at some point. Especially since I expect the race to #1 to be crowded next year.

That said, OP mantaining the crown for so long was a seriously incredible feat, even if this was bound to happen at some point.

No king reigns forever.

OP has only released one volume this year compared to the 3 or 4 it usually does. I mean Kimetsu really blew it out. Kingdom and the rest would easily fall behind had OP released 3 volumes.
Yeah, I can understand KNY being ahead, but Kingdom and Haikyu?! :(

Why are you sad? It still has the lifetime sales record, and nothing is ever coming close to beating that.

One Piece not placing first place every year isn't an indictment on the quality of the series. I know One Piece fans were accustomed to pointing to the sales to reinforce their belief that it was the best manga, but that was never the case anyway.

OP just needs to time its release right and get five volumes in a year and oda should do spinoff volumes.

Haikyu isn't ahead of OP nor is it likely to be at the end of the year. I merely threw the possibility of it happening because well, it is possible. But I don't expect it to happen.

I also don't see why there is a need to be sad about it. Both are great series, and the #1 position changing over the years is healthy for the industry. And it will probably change again next year with KnY only having one release next year and a lot of variables at play.

Oda's change in release schedule has definitely affected its sales figures. In the 32 issues this year he took a break 25% of the time. Those 8 chapters basically mean one less volume - around 1.5 volumes worth of content less by the end of the year. Even if the individual volumes aren't selling at their peak anymore it's the less volumes per year that's doing a lot of the damage since we're never going to get the same amount of content each year as we did a decade ago.

If Viz also removes it from their Digital Vault, it will leave a bad taste in my mouth since Kenshin is still there, even 10 chapters of Hokkaido Sequel.

I also just bought volume 5-12 digitally (have 1-4) on 3rd party site (honto) to support Shiro. If the publisher asks them (honto) to remove it under 30 days, I want my refund back, or not since they are only 27$. I don't want to collect the physical 1-12 since every time I look at it, I will probably be sad, and reading manga should not make you sad (not sad because the content is sad). Given that volumes are selling out, Shiro should be okay financially for a while.

This makes me determine to support Shiro Usazaki next work even more, whenever she is ready again.

I hope Magu-chan places well since it's my favourite of the recent batch of 4, but I noticed that the PV on Jump's channel has less views than the other three. Ayakashi and Cop make sense that they'd have way more, but even Roboco's got 5k more despite it coming a couple weeks later.

Even excluding the revenue coming in from sales, I can’t imagine Shueisha and Jump not compensating Usazaki in some way.

She was cancelled for reasons out of her control, without warning or prep time. Would be horrible if they just said “hey, I know you had a solid source of income because of Act-Age, but sorry, you’re on your own now”.

I obviously have no way of knowing they wouldn’t do this. Big cooperations screw over their employees all the time. I’d just like to imagine they’re giving her some type of payments aside from volume royalties until she finds a new series

Now that Undead unluck and Mashle are established. It is very likely that the next new series will be a failure.
It is almost certain that they will have only two survivors from 2020 (Undead and Mashle) if there are any more, it may be Ayakashi triangle.

Magu-chan is a gem of a series. I would be disappointed if they cancelled it.
We will know this week I guess, based on how Chapter 1 does.

I can imagine Shueisha would probably pay her for all the volumes that will go uncollected based on completed and released chapters. But yeah, I don't see her getting compensated more than that.
That said, I'm fairly certain they will help her try to find another series to work on as soon as she is ready.

The general consensus is that compared to all the series below them these two have managed to have decent upward growth in sales, constantly good/great TOC positions, and with the abundant free slots in the magazine something major out of left field would have to happen to change that trajectory. They're both pretty much out of the firing line, with Yozakura somewhere close by.

I wouldn't be shocked if Mashle in particular becomes a very popular series to the magazine in the long run.

Meanwhile, VIZ is more than happy to keep Rurouni Kenshin, the Restoration spinoff, Buso Renkin, Gun Blaze West, and Toriko in their Vault...

At least be consistent, the Watsuki charges aren't even three years old! I guess that Matsuki couldn't make them enough money 🤷‍♂️

To be fair, I believe Act-Age being removed may be a request from Shuiesha and not completely Viz, based on their statement, and other countries saying that they were waiting for directions from Shuiesha before going forward last week.

I agree though, remove all of them or none of them.
