Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

There is probably quite a lot more people who read WSJ compared to those who buy it however if you're comparing views, because I think it's fairly common in Japan for people to pick up a magazine and read it in the shop for a bit then put it back on the shelf when done (and shopkeepers don't mind since it deters crime if they're not alone).

Guessing from previous volume releases' backlogs, that's around 1.22-1.24mln for OP. For a 5 days release that's about in line with what I expected. Probably going to perform similarly to 96 I guess, definitely lower than 94.

The "oneshot" is just the first 19 pages of the Volume 0 chapter.

That's not totally true. I was in Japan last year and most magazines (including manga magazines) had a plastic band around them, so you don't read them without paying. I saw this on most conbini.
Also the old "pick a random magazine on the train and read it" thing doesn't seem to happen, at least not anymore.

Speaking of magazine circulation, do we have any idea how many people read the magazine digitally? Or is that factored into the overall circulation numbers?

no & no ( at least in riaj I'm sure the circ number are physical only not 100% with shueisha reports, but should not be included since the last time it was included was SQ fro 2018 and they explicitly mentioned including digital )

btw circ is just a part of the equation, we also need to take into account return rate, WSJ peaked in 1994 with 2% (AFAWK) adn the last known reported return rate was was in 2012 (~10%)

should be lower nowadays.. according to AJPEA, return rate of weekly magazines (as a whole so all weekly magazines, not just manga) are 42.3% for 2019 (manga magazines might be higher but we have no real way to tell)

____

for digital ratio, we have never really got a ratio for any specific magazines, but looking at the japanese publishing industry as a whole (again according to AJPEA), digital magazines make up a whopping.... 0.8% of the entire market. (6 B yen out of 794.5 B yen ; 2020 first half) or 3.4% of the digital market (60 B yen out of 176.2 B yen)

as for manga magazines, in 2018 (last time number was reported by AJPEA) digital magazines took up a massive... 4% of the total manga magazines sales (in term of yen)

keep in mind that number is as a whole, not for any specific magazines, so we need to take into consideration of physical only magazine (also, by that logic, digital only magazines also exists by the way) also some might disagree on the some parts of the methodology used, butI i considered the good enough

those are the (reported) numbers. make of that what you will

everything is here https://www.ajpea.or.jp/ you can find them yourself. (tbf, some are via news site but those are easy enough if you know the headline.)

One piece is a one milion seller, its current sales(per volume) are higher than naruto's peak(1.3 million).

Currently there arent many one million sellers in the entire industry: demon salyer, one piece and I think that's it.

I don't think shuiesha would cancel their only remaining one million seller.

Maybe in ten years if the decline conteniues but it would be naturally over by then.

I'm confused by some users here who think that One Piece will get cancelled or rushed if it dips below a certain amount of sales. Do you guys not follow WSJ properly?

Even if One Piece lasts another 15 years and sells as low as 50k a volume, it'll still be allowed to run in the magazine until Oda wants to end it. Why? Because its One Piece, the best selling manga of all time, the one that broke records and the one that remained WSJ's biggest pillar for close to 3 decades.

Like, why is this even up for debate!? To quote Mash

The only way I can see One Piece being rushed is if Oda wants it (whatever the reason it may be). It has been the main pillar of the magazine for years and if they did not cancel sonething like HxH with its irregular schedule (I mean hiatus), there is no way they would do that to One Piece.

Now that KnY is gone, the only one that could prevent a strong decline in magazine sales is MHA. Before OP ends, they really need to find other big successes that could carry the magazine.
