Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

No, why would it?
I've suggested this a few times before, but tbh, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to include four rotating monthly series like Sunday used to do. Jump has already experimented with the idea of monthlies in the past as well like with Boruto.
Could be a way to get Togashi back to a semi-regular serialization, let it run for half a year, then the other half can go to maybe 1-2 mini-series let One Piece go monthly for Oda's sake. and let the last two slots be occupied by another veteran mangaka, and a new generation mangaka.
It's likely we'd see several cancellations with the new series within 6 chapters/months or less, however once Jump can find some that stick it could be a an interesting way to shake the magazine up a bit every week.

I hope Oda is healthy and can come back fully recovered after this small hiatus.

Now talking objectively about the enjoyment of One Piece, the breaks hurts mine badly since there's always a lot of things happening in the arcs and it can be hard to follow. I'm seriously considering to put it on hold until the end of Wano (now if at least I could do it without getting spoilers while lurking around internet).

That'd certainly be different, and it would make sense for Togashi or new monthly from the start series, but that also begs the question of what is Jump SQ and Ultra Jump for, then? Jump SQ is already stacked to all hell, and Ultra Jump only has some big series come through on occasion, but still. There's even Jump+, which offers even more scheduling options (weekly, 3 chapters a month, bi-weekly, etc.)

My personal problem with the idea of having monthly manga in a weekly magazine, especially new series and not ones moving to a monthly schedule, is likely to damn that particular manga to obscurity from the start, with everything else going on in the weekly portion of the magazine.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Also, I would like to add to the conversation about new series. I'm quite content with Mashle, Undead, and Ayakashi this year for weekly, and I don't mind Kaiju No. 8 and Ghost Reaper Girl on Jump+, so frankly, I'm fine with whatever new series comes. If some more absolute bangers come out, great, but I'm more than satisfied with those few stand out examples.

Edit: I also just want to point out; every time I see some random user on Twitter comment on the unofficial WSJ posts saying "cancel this trash" "this series is gonna be axed in 2 volumes, no cap", etc. it really makes me lose faith in the collective fanbase for manga. It's like. You don't like a series. Great. But why do you need to be a public ass, crying for it to be cast down into fire and brimstone? Let other people like what they want, especially when it doesn't affect you.

And if you really have to point out your distaste for a series, please come with better examples than "it's mid". Not every manga can be the greatest of all time. Either have valid criticisms, admit you're only saying you don't like it because other people do, or admit that you don't know why exactly you don't like it (which is completely fine, but still doesn't make it permissable to trash it for someone else).

I can understand those concerns, however Jump SQ has a completely different team of editors and contracted mangakas behind it, and Ultra Jump is a seinen magazine in addition to also having its own team. I doubt it would really interfere or cut into their profits. Especially given Jump would only have a very limited (4 max) spots open for monthly series.
Plus the argument could easily be made against Manga+ having monthly series as well.
It simply allows more options for WSJ, and Shueshia as a whole to make more money and eases the burdens/risks on higher risk mangaka.

I don't necessarily have an issue with any of those points, but one argument I would make in support of Jump+ having monthly series versus WSJ; Jump+ is digital only, and as such the chapters are always available digitally. My concern with WSJ is that despite the fact that it too has a digital issue, as well as chapters appearing on Jump+, I would worry that people picking up the physical issues may skip it/forget about it being there monthly as they'll only see it that once a month, compared to Jump+ readers who can check the chapter list at any time. Maybe a silly concern that doesn't make much sense, but that's the best I can explain it at the moment.

Fair concern tbh, however I can see it being somewhat alleviated by including the schedule of the four monthly series in the ToC every week. So even though they may not appear, it may still show up on the ToC page remind readers of its next chapter date.
Probably could be figured out through trial and error.

Tbh, I think Kaiju No. 8 is quite overrated from the chapters so far, still living off the hype from the first two chapters. This whole exam stuff and all was bog standard stuff, executed solidly, but nothing more.
8Kaijuu is tropes done right. I’d rather have someone who does a generic manga but executes it well than a newbie trying something “shocking”, “non-standard” but have no idea how to execute them.

That's how I kind of felt about Kaijuu's first chapter, and it's an argument I often use for Jujutsu Kaisen.
However, I feel Kaijuu really hasn't lived up to the potential of its first chapter. Really seems to be dragging its feet by going through the motions of what every battle shonen does. Which again, isn't a problem if I was invested, but the progression feels very lazily done to me. It doesn't feel to me like the mangaka is having fun, but simply writing on autopilot for the sake of it. Having flashbacks of Heart Gear. Mostly competent everything, but lacking that magic to be invested in.
I find GrG to be a better example of a generic series with brilliant execution.

Turning One Piece and Hunter x Hunter into monthly would be a disaster in terms of pace.

See for example Araki, who since he switched to the monthly has chapters of several pages but the content is the same as the weekly ones, with the result that 4 chapters of a fight previously took up less than half the volume and now fill a whole one.

The weekly rhythm setting and habits take too deep roots, especially after decades of this practice

Monthly chapters are twice as long as weekly ones (sometimes longer).

Monthly manga release 3 volumes a year, one piece releases 4-3 volumes a year with all the breakers, a normal manga releases 5-4 volumes a year.

So turning one piece into a monthly series would make it permenatly release 3 volumes year which would be less content over all. (since most years one piece releases 4 volumes).

Also jump would never let one piece become monthly.

They can adjust pacing though? You pointed out Araki is doing fine monthly. Other mangaka like the To Love ru and Death Note duos switched to monthly and while Platinum End has all kinds of issues I don't think I've ever heard pacing (although to be fair I haven't read it)

To be completely fair, the manga is still in its early stages. It’s taking its time to do a little world-building, introducing characters and setting up a couple of things in the future. And that’s completely fine. It hasn’t reached a point where things are getting dragged out yet, and all of the past chapters have served a purpose.

I actually kind of like that fact about Araki. When JoJo was weekly, there were a lot of fights that felt like they should have been longer, but instead ended up feeling like villain of the week fights, even when they were more significant than that.

I feel like Steel Ball Run especially did this well. Even fights that plot wise weren't that significant felt like they were worth your time investment, instead of being quickly written off to the point that they may as well not have happened.

This. I really don’t like the shonen community on Twitter because it feels like you can only like one series at times. All this arguing about why your manga is the greatest while belittling others for stuff you don’t like. Okay, you don’t like this series, but goddamn it other people do and you just saying it’s trash and wishing it fails and dies only breeds more hatred. It really does feel like people only hate popular series because they wanna be different and contrarian at times. And people shout “axed” so early because they want to be the ones who were like “I called it” when it does get axed most of the time.
There are people who like series that you hate. I have a friend who really liked Beast Children and was sad that got axed, for example.

At least explain why you don’t like a series. Did a major character seriously ruin your enjoyment? Did you not find it to be compelling enough? Are you just not a fan of its tropes? I want to understand. This is the Internet though, so productive conversation probably shouldn’t be expected.
Sorry for the rant, it just pisses me off sometimes. If it’s off topic, feel free to delete.

Why are you assuming that One Piece and HxH would suffer like JoJo (that's if you believe it did) did despite sharing different mangaka? Different mangaka will adapt to monthly serialization differently. There have been plenty other mangaka used to weekly serializations that adjusted to monthlies afterwards just fine (like Inoue. Ashihara, Konomi, and Takei to name a few from WSJ who I think are actually better under the monthly schedule).
Plus, HxH already is serialized irregularly so its fans are used to breaks in between chapters.

Monthly would be and would have been completely different One Piece and Hunter x Hunter, as well as SnK and Boruto as they are made would be horrible if published weekly.

Oda and Togashi now have their own style of writing and drawing, and making a monthly issue with maybe thirty-forty pages would not help to speed up the various events, on the contrary it would make them expand into several pages events that are already useless with a weekly issue.

And this is because now this is their style of writing, and due to the age and habit they have accumulated by now they will never change it.

Why are you projecting artistic limitations onto Oda and Togashi? There are plenty of counter examples to what you are saying.

I would worry that people picking up the physical issues may skip it/forget about it being there monthly as they'll only see it that once a month, compared to Jump+ readers who can check the chapter list at any time. Maybe a silly concern that doesn't make much sense, but that's the best I can explain it at the moment.
Monthy serials in Jump usually get cover acknlowlegement in the issue they get published. And they usually get the big spaces in the ToCs (After the 1997 overhaul of the ToC design). So unless you were actively trying to mentally block it out, they would be hard to miss.
