Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

You think we'll get as many new series next year as we've had this year?

If we do, it'll probably be a lot more brutal on the newbies since there's no big line up of long runners ending to save the bottom ranks.
Yeah we probably would since WSJ is still looking out for more big successes especially with all the big titles that ended this year.

Next year should be more competitive in the magazine if WSJ finds more success with newbies.

For starters, Kimetsu no Yaiba is still (obviously) doing amazing. It's up by 169,915 copies when compared to the previous volume. When both the standard and special editions of volume 22 are combined it has the highest cummulative second week ever with 2,818,626, beating One Piece 66's second week cummulative sales of 2,689,552. It will probably cross the 3 million next week, faster than the previous volume, which did it in 4 weeks. The Promised Neverland is also doing numbers, it's up by 44,464 copies when compared to the previous volume which had the same amount of days in its first week. The finale seems to have actually boosted VoV sales since the previous volume also showed an improvement.

Jujutsu Kaisen's boost is already showing some effects with the current volume selling 30,464 more copies when compared to the previous one, which had 3 additional days in its first week. Crossing fingers that sales will grow even more with upcoming volumes. The backlog's LTD falls right within my prediction, which is good, maybe the boost is good enough that it can cross 1 million sometime next year. Both Burn the Witch and Ayakashi Triangle are doing great, not much to talk about them since there's no previous data to compare to. Black Clover is actually down by 8,805 copies when compared to the previous volume and is down by 3,223 when compared to volume 24. We Never Learn is doing normal numbers for the series and One Piece is still pretty ahead of the previous volume, selling 113,142 copies more.

Definitely. Right now there are 19 manga in the magazine (didn't include HxH or BTW) and 11 of them were released this year. The only ones from 2020 that are currently guaranteed to stay in the magazine are UxU, Mashle and AT. The rest are either flops waiting to be axed (AB, Morking) or too new so we're waiting for sales. WSJ lost few of their biggest manga this year and have nothing to replace their big numbers with.

I feel like WSJ will be more brutal next year if the stories doesn't make decent numbers right away since they'll be desperate for new hits.

Yozakura is from 2019 so I didn't include it since I was talking about the 2020 newbies. Yozakura sales are improving so I don't see WSJ axeing any time soon

I'm just gonna say, Nakaji was Chagecha's editor. The series is scheduled for early next year and Bobobo's 20th Anniversary is in February. Aside from that, we have had a few promotions and activity lately from the franchise. Don't want to get my hopes high, but there's a lot of hints directed to Yoshio Sawai and I'd be more than happy with his comeback.

Thought about Kawashita too (if by after a long time he means him and the author working together), but yeah, Sawai seems more likely.

As of 7 PM JST (so in like 8 hours or so from the first screening) "Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train" seems to have exceeded 1 billion yen in box office revenue

This is the highest revenue in a single day in Japan boxoffice history

Most of the bigger anime franchise films take between 1 to 2 weeks to hit that mark... 8 hours was all it took Kimetsu. 8 hours. I honestly still can’t fathom it’s explosive popularity. Goddamn, some people must’ve gained so much from this.

Looks like Kimetsu S2 will be announced tomorrow
Does anybody know when that compilation film will air?

With all the money Kimetsu has earned the Shueisha will go on for another twenty years at least.

Well... if I recall, Shinkai put on some weight after his success with Your Name. So...... yeah. Gotouge be dining on some fine sushi for the next few months. And years. I mean, if this makes even half of what Your Name made (as if. This moneymaker’s gonna make way past that.), Gotouge’s pretty set for life.

Just wow at those KnY numbers.. It will always boggle me haha, like if there´s ever a book or a documentary exploring or theorizing on KnY´s success I´d probably buy (And I haven't even read KnY yet, though I plan on it soonish).

Hopefully this means more manga get better budget in their anime adaptations (Wanting to replicate anything close to KnY´s success).

BUT
one thing I don´t want to see happen... Though maybe it will start happening is manga getting an arc adapted into a movie (This is a movie adaptation of a manga arc, correct?).

Even though watching a movie quality adaptation of a manga arc would be great... It would also be a pain in the ass for us international watchers, because most times streaming services don´t care to have OVAs or movies in their catalog...
e.g. Shokugeki No Soma OVAs, like there´s an OVA that´s pretty much what connects season 2 to season 3 (It´s cannon chapter from the manga that for some reason the studio decided to make into an OVA instead of a normal episode) and it´s not on Crunchyroll (I think it has never been? So there has never been to watch this OVA in any legal way IIRC)

Gotouge was set for life even before Kimetsu exploded in popularity, he was at least a millionaire, although that could not be enough to be set for life in Japan I guess.
