Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

So there is a chance MHA ends the year as the sixth Jump series in sales in 2020, if Jujutsu Kaisen manages to beat it, making MHA to be below it, Kimetsu, OP, Haikyuu and Neverland.

Is interesting that while it looks like MHA is having the Black Clover situation, it isn't like that. MHA 2020 sales are actually good (I think this is like the third year with most volumes sold, not sure, but MHA will end 2020 with +5 and maybe +6 million copies sold).
All you need to do is see the volumes to print ratio, and compare the respective series. You’ll see that MHA is doing just fine.

Although it could certainly sell a bit more....

What is interesting to look out for is 8Kaiju next year, being a potential heavyweight in this free-for-all. Although I wonder if Kimetsu’s release might hurt it in December.

Is MHA now the standard?

I see that it gets cited as the series to beat nowadays. Is it really the best metric to use?
Going off by pure numbers, that would be KnY. But in terms of impact and influence, MHA is definitely the “standard”, so to speak. Even now, you can see some of its influence in other mangas, like 8Kaiju for instance.

It’s unknown what kind of impact and influence KnY will have, which probably won’t be seen until 3-5 years from now. But it and MHA will likely influence future authors in some way, one way or another.

It depends, for Kimetsu this speech in my opinion is only valid for the Japan, in the West although now it is considerably more famous it has never broken through much.

Undoubtedly Hero here was more impactful.

I wouldn't call MHA standard though, it still remains one of the magazine's top sellers with a very strong franchise.

Standard is more applicable to Black Clover which sells what is enough to survive without distinguishing itself in anything.

Well. MHA (I'm talking peak) is basically the highest that it's reasonable to expect something else to beat. Sure, KnY is way beyond that but that's obviously not something that can be used as measuring stick. OP is in it own league too. Maybe Kingdom numbers could potentially be reachable, but it's been a while since a WSJ pulled that (besides KnY).

We'll see how solid that lead is once we see how high JJK and Chainsawman can get. In the end it doesn't look like even the last TPN is gonna beat MHA's peak. It could be there just hasn't been strong enough competition in the last five years, or it could be that's a very big number by today's standards and KnY going beyond that is just very, very exceptional (which it is, regardless, but you get what I mean).

Mha is not really the standard for sales, jump series(most of them) are outliers, not many series reach 100,000 first week or 200,000 first 4 weeks, any series that sells like black clover would be considered a pillar in other magazines.

Another thing people don't understand is that most series have a peek rather early, and a few series really manage to maintain their sales all the way through, decline usually is inevitable, series like one piece that had a peak 13 years after release are rare(not to mention it was a millon seller before its peak and even after its decline is still a million seller) and series like KnY that have a monstrous explosion in popularity near the end are rarer.

Yeah out of the stuff that is running at the moment that isn't already adapted, Mashle and Yozakura are the only one's that I could imagine not being late night shows. That being said considering how long runners are becoming less and less frequent I'd expect them to be seasonals that aired earlier in the evening, like MHA rather than like Black Clover. Also yeah as said above it's not like Toei's been picking up a lot of new properties recently.
I'm not really sure long runners anime are less common.

It seems more like these aren't popular between Western fandom, so we don't heard a lot about them.

It's the "pillar" and also, lets be honest, the one with the more attainable target (compared to Kimetsu or One Piece).
A good battle series that is well received in WSJ can usually reach those heights. We are most likely going to see that with JK. CSM has the potential to also reach that.
TPN did that as well and Kimetsu out did it x6

MHA is one of the """"old"""" pillars that sells in a comprehensive way.
So I can see why its a benchmark to beat.

KNY will stay #1. Anyone saying otherwise is simply wrong. There's not any way it will slow down to the point of not being #1 especially with the 4 million sales the last volume will generate.
I agree with you. However, One Piece is definitely going to receive huge promotions next year for volume 100 and chapter 1000 so we’ll have to wait and see.

Promotions don't necessarily mean Increased sales.

The strong world promotion was a normal movie promotion, it exploded in popularity by circumstances.

Just like demon salyer was a normal anime promotion that exploded in popularity by circumstances.

These moments are the exception that prove the rule, its not normal for a series to suddenly explode near the end or 50 volumes in(though it was big before that) , if one piece were to get another big explosion in popularity near volume 100 it would be a miracle(it's doing well now with its 1.5-1.7 million (4 week) per volume sales).

Tdlr: It's possible but it's chances are very low.

Yeah, I feel as if HeroAca was one of the manga to beat for a long time. It's just that in the past year, a lot of newer manga have actually started to beat it, or at least seriously challenge it:
Kimetsu no Yaiba (after the anime)
Spy x Family
The Promised Neverland (possibly)
The Quintessential Quintuplets (would've definitely done so if it had one more volume)

I know it doesn't mean much, but how often do you see One Piece getting knocked out of the top 5.

I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often with both Spanish and English chapters. Pretty much just after Boruto and DBS release only 1 other series (like MHA this week) needs to do better than it and it should happen almost every month (I only have English chapters visible so I'll probably never see it though.)
