Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

All I really see regarding Akaboshi is this: if it improves, it improves, even if it's at the expense of newer series that are collapsing. 6th from last doesn't mean we're seeing an anime any time in the future, but at least it is a start or a mirage...

Good week for Sket and Gintama, though, so I guess it's not that bad a week.

Yeah... to be honest, I wouldn't think it was such a big deal if it wasn't related to a chapter most people consider the series' weakest. That's what makes me have so much hope for the upcoming weeks. Hell, a chapter with a ton of gags and little to no action managed to pull it out of the bottom 5... imagine what the chapters that made even some haters start liking the series a bit (though it may not happen the same way with the Japanese, I know) are capable of!

Well Medaka, Akaboshi, and Wajima all still have a month to improve on rankings till the next cuts. Kagijin could still improve, but its chances seem much lower just because I don't see any series doing worse or an older series ending which is what saved some of the others.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

It's useless to compare the series we have now to the rankings of past series. Jump as a magazine keeps changing, for better and for worse.
You said everything, man. There isn't a pattern for series.
People can compare the series, of course, but this means almost nothing for the future of series ongoing.

For example, some people said that Akaboshi is pretty condemned, but now we are not so sure.

I'm still not gonna say Akaboshi's definitely safe, but I'm not so sure that it's definitely gone anymore either. Even if it just stayed where it is right now, it could very well slip past a few worse off series and either get around P2/Usagi length or eventually develop enough of a fandom to hold it's own.

Really gonna depend on the next few rankings.

Even if the meeting is in a few weeks, the editors will have information about its popularity from the preceding chapters - though we haven't seen the results in the ToC yet. If Akaboshi really is improving, it'll count for something. And is it possible to have a kind of conditional status - e.g. if Akaboshi's tank sales are good, it stays, if not...?

Akaboshi sales currently in amazon is pretty bad. Medaka on the other hand, almost rival mago and reborn

I can't post the result yet, because they are not yet on the top 100. But there are the sales ranking on the product page. Mago, Reborn and Medaka are usually ranked around 200-300 best selling manga, Akaboshi is still around 1000

I'm not sure the series with low ranking and high tank sales are safe. In Bakuman, the ranking is treated more importantly than the tank sells.

Bakuman warps things a bit from reality. They said something like "if you sell more than 500,000 tankoubons it doesn't matter where you're ranked" but really very few sell that high, but things like ToLoveRu stayed at the bottom and kept being serialized and got animes.

Though I really doubt something's gonna get an extremely high sales if it's NEW and doing badly. But tankoubon results do trump TOC results.

Sales are the be all and end all, no matter what Bakuman says. If the tankobon sell, Shueisha makes money. The polls do not turn a profit. The magazines do not turn a profit. Their sole purpose is to promote the tankobon. If Shueisha canceled a manga that made money over the polls they would have gone out of business long ago. D. Gray Man would have been canceled long ago. To Love Ru would have been canceled. Mago would have been canceled. It was consistantly in the bottom five after selling a million tankobon. As Kewl said very few series that poll poorly from the start sell well, or even make it long enough to sell. They are usually non - action series that don't poll well no matter what.

It goes on sales next month but pre-orde is available. Unless it's an action series or at least have elements of it, very few sold around 500k. There are very few non-action manga that are among jump all time best selling titles of all time. The one I know are barefoot gen, toilet no hakase, I"s, hikaru no go, kochikame

While bakuman is a good manual to know a lot about manga, but that doesn't mean you should swallow everything without filtering it. Sales are the king, manga is a business, publisher wants money

I'd like to see this. Could you post a link to the product page please :)

And don't think of great sales as just the mega - series. To Love Ru and Eyeshield would have been among Shonen Magazines recent best sellers. Fairy Tail and Ahiru no Sora, ShoMag's most popular series, sell about the same as those two.

That's a very grizzly stat on Akoboshi. Medaka doesn't surprise me, NisiOisiN fans who might not by Jump every week could be pushing the pre - orders up. I am surprised it's more popular then Reborn. Since Amazon requires payment for pre - orders this represents actual sales. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Koshi, thanks for the links Mr. Prince :)

That is an interesting bit of information to see.

Makes me even more interested to see actual sales figures for volume 1 when it is released.

I agree with you about Medaka, Kaiten. NisiOisin is now a household name and has legion of fans ready to buy his work. When I first saw Medaka's ranking, the first thing that jump into my mind was NisiOisin's name
