Aww, what a cute cover. (Wish DGM had been on it.)

Matsui looks too pretty to be drawing manga. Wooooow.

Ha, I have to say that is one of my favorite covers in recent memory. I really enjoy it.

As for the ToC, I'm glad to see Beelzebub rise up again. Reborn, Toriko, and Medaka I'd like to see higher next week. Psyren has been doing good for itself as of late along with Sket.

Now lets see if Ane-doki and Kagijin can actually manage to rank well in this cluster fuck. Also obligatory death wish for Kuroko.

I think the cancellation system worked by if a series stayed in bottom 5 for at least five striaght weeks.

For example:

Samurai Usagi=10 weeks
P2! - let's Play Pingpong! -=5 weeks
Blue Dragon RalΩGrad=7 weeks
Hatsukoi Limited=8 weeks
Double Arts=6 weeks

In conclusion, Kuroko actually never stayed bottom 5 for five straight weeks, so I think Kuroko is safe, for now. However, Medaka is in bottom 5 for three weeks now, so if Medaka doesn't escape bottom 5 for next 2 or 3 issues, then Medaka has high probability to be go along with Akaboshi.

patterns aren't always so consistent, just roll with the fact that cancellations can be pretty much random as long as the series has started to falter heavily.

imo, cancellation considering many aspect, not just ToC. how you explain To-Love-Ru and Jaguar.

Yeah, I know that patterns aren't consistent. But, there are quite often this pattern was occured, since 2007, I think. And my study(?) was based on series that survived pretty long, but got axed eventually.

Jaguar is actually an unranked series. I think the author chose to stay in the last place. So, actually a real last place is above Jaguar. Furthermore, Jaguar is actually quite popular in Japan, it does pretty well on volume sells, too.

The main mystery is Tolove-Ru. It is in bottom 5 for I think almost one year. I heard the rumor that the author always hand the work late, that's why it puts on the bottom. And I think few weeks ago, To Love-Ru was top of bottom 5 because this time the author handed the work on time.

Some of those pictures look like they were taken years ago. On one photo Kishimoto looks like a teen and on another Oda looks like one too. Kubo seems to have changed a little, though he still likes wearing shades.

To-Love-ru as a long running series, over 200 chapters... I forget how long, it gets good volume sales too. It's around the same as Toriko, so like 175,000 each...

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

Toriko is poised to pass ToRa in sales, but the point is well taken. To Love Ru would be the most popular series in either of the other three weekly shonen anthologies. Judging it by it's popularity by TOC placement is nearly impossible. Same goes for D. Gray Man an even more popular series that has polled erratically at best. While Gintama and Reborn have always ranked higher, DGM has always sold better.

Don't forget: dropping into the bottom only matters if it happens within the first ten chapters, and stays there. After that series usually last long enough to be judged by sales.

I think this rule only occured from complete new series that fall down to bottom 5 and never escaped from it, like Asklepios, Bokke-san, Hoopmen, and Akaboshi.

But, the series that did pretty well on the beginning, then fallen down to bottom 5, like Blue Dragon, Hatsukoi, and Double Arts, might take rule #2. Even Shaman King got axed because of being in low ranking for long time.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

Double Arts fell into the bottom five within ten weeks and stayed their. Nothing is canceled after only five weeks so it stands to reason that every series that has ever been canceled for low rankings has been in the bottom five more then five weeks. Even that can mean very little. Psyren and Sket Dance spent more then five weeks in the bottom five, neither are huge seller, yet they're still serialized.

Hatsukoi may not have been canceled. The story feels complete, the argument could be made that Kawashita began resolving subplots as early as chapter 18. Besides, why use a series as example of cancellation when it's anime just ended. The only new anime from Weekly Jump this year.

There is no "magic number" or "secret formula" for canceling a series. It is an editorial decision based on a handful of metrics, from fan feedback to volume sales. If those metric are met but the staff feel potential still exists, or it fills an important (genre, age, never genre) demographic void Shueisha may allow it to last longer then another series with similar rankings or sales. But nothing will ever be automatically be canceled upon hitting something arbitrary as staying in the bottom five exactly 5 straight weeks.

Double Arts did very well on first ten weeks, it was regularly on top 5 or middle, it even got cover on chapter 13. Double Arts dropped to bottom 5 around chapter 17 or 18 and stayed their until it got axed. If Double Arts didn't drop to bottom 5, is should have gone same level as Gintama/Reborn/D'Gray-man.

And, to me, Hatsukoi had a rushed ending because it was in bottom 5 for around 7 or 8 weeks. If a series stayed that long in bottom 5, it is very difficult or impossible to escape from bottom 5. And I was expected that Kawashita to have more relationship between Yuuji and Misaki because they are my most favorite couple in Hatsukoi.

Lastly, I didn't say that if a series stayed on bottom 5 for at least five weeks, it will, 100 percent, be cut. I said that it is in very dangerous position to be cut next, but there were some exception for this rule, like Mx0, Sket Dance and Psyren.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

the 'automatically' here is the important info muwlove. we're not disputing that series are usually cancelled when they've been at the bottom 5 for any amount of time, just that it is one of MANY deciding factors and a low ranking can mean jack in the long run. or the short run.

EDIT: caught the hell up with the topic. is it me or are the majority of manga-ka... not exactly lookers....

especially my favourite of the bunch, buichi terasawa.... he scares me

I think if a series axed, it has some chapter make an alternative ending. So if decided the cancellation it has chapters. And needles ranking this chapters, so they in the end of TOC.

How other people think about it?
I though Shonen Jump's moto was to Publish badass manga and brainwash people into wasting their life savings on the magazine JK
seems like all of SJ's manga fits those 3 principals

Thanks to Mei-san.
