Nice cover for Issue 40, though I would have liked to see a Bakuman cover since the next issue has chapter 52, but at least its not Naruto.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

i guess road to success as action manga in JUMP is pretty tough right now...
two questions:
1. does Mago appeal to older readers? i mean, when i read it, i thought it was more for younger readers because the characters were pretty young, and the youkai club and stuff seemed like it won't appeal to older readers.

2. Is Toriko good? i know its hit in Japan right now, but for "international" web-based readers, it didn't seem like it was doing that well. (its ranked 202 in OM, while Akaboshi is 45th).

seems like there are big difference in popularity between Japanese readers and English readers for new series.
1. Mago's art style and traditional Obake theme appeal more to older than younger reader. Most younger reader like the more modern depiction of Youkai. From what I've heard, many Japanese reader are already considering it the successor to Ushio and Tora, a legendary youkai manga from Shonen Sunday which had a wide appeal. Also, like Koen says, the flashback arc is too dark for younger reader. The current enemy is also a bit scary for it's younger reader.

2. Toriko is good, like many people says it's has a similar spirit to One Piece. I think why it's not famous with international reader is because it's unique art, like One Piece.

The international fans, I think, like energetic and action more than creativity and unique story. That's why Bleach is more popular than OP internationally. Anyway, One Manga isn't the only manga site available. In Manga Fox, mago has a higher rank than Reborn or D.Gray.

But Toriko's art remains me to Jojo's Bizarre or Hokuto no Ken art. It's not like One Piece, who has a strange but original art.

Still Toriko is pretty good, but it doesn't have the popularity in internet like Psyren or Bakuman.

i guess i should try Toriko then.... its so sad when the new mangas i decided not to read becomes a success while the new mangas i do read always seems to get canceled.

. Anyway, One Manga isn't the only manga site available. In Manga Fox, mago has a higher rank than Reborn or D.Gray.
yeah, but i'm a bit suspicious about MangaFox rank... i mean Onidere being 5th is a bit too much. ( its more popular than Bleach or OP!)
Akaboshi, which is in verge of cancellation being 45th in OM, while Toriko is in the 200s i think is a huge difference.

thank you every one for answering my question ! :)

I'm not sure whether Mago is popular to older readers, but I'm sure that Mago is very popular throughout young readers.

Toriko is also good, but it is quite boring on last few weeks. But, it is getting interesting again, so Toriko going to be big as Bleach or Reborn.

In addition, I uploaded this information for people who are interested in.

Although I do read it, I still don't really get why Toriko is a hit or how it could be similiar to One Piece. It's not bad, but it's never had a lasting impression on me and it seems kinda passive. My guess is that it's probably simple enough for tweens and below to appreciate, or am I wrong?

the JUMP sale actually increased this year????? (not by much though, but still)
wasn't manga sale in a constant downfall since Dragonball?

Considering internet popularity doesn't really bring any money to Jump, I don't think it's in any of their priority:D

That's the magazine sale and not tankoubon. Yes, the sales of magazine has been down since the 1990's, it used to be around 6 million but now only around 2 million, but ever since One Piece come, it has been increasing gradually. One Piece is really something

I'm not sure whether Mago is popular to older readers, but I'm sure that Mago is very popular throughout young readers.

Actually, a friend of mine in japan told me young reader got freaked out with Mago's youkai design. They were expecting more of a modern youkai like YYH. By the time Bleach, Naruto or Reborn end, Toriko and Mago will be promoted heavily as their replacement.

I saw in raw-paradise that To love ru is ending. I mean issue 40 is the last chapter. I mean... it is ending!!!! END. Its like too good to be true. Is this mean that some of the "non performing" series will get salvation or Jump will throws some fresh series again.

there are two new series coming out.
the one next is by the mangaka of Muddy. and it didn't look that much appealing.
the one after that is a gag manga.

so yeah, i'm quite disappointed by the upcoming new series.

The fall series line-up didn't do very well, since after Naruto. I think the editors treat fall series as cushion to other series that have a chance of becoming successful.

This is merely a coincidence, not a rule. I can't believe this happened willfully. Maybe the series of this year won't do well too, but that'll happen just for the quality of the series, not for the season of debut.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

No actually, they do not want to challenge Magazine. Magazine does not want to challenge Jump. Jump deliberately targets a younger demographic, they have been the magazine for tweens since launching. Magazine has targeted older readers for almost as long. Both are happy to welcome other demographics, generally featuring a few series that appeal to them. Fairy Tail and Tsuabasa come to mind for Magazine. The point is: neither are in direct competition. They don't have to worry about losing readers to the other. Not surprisingly, they are the only two magazines with stable readership.
Sure both of them want to challenge the other. Remember that Magazine used to beat Jump at one time. Magazine wants to get younger readers because thsoe younger readers will then become young adults with more disposable income (as supposed to older readers who have bills to pay).

And Jump will want to try and maintain its younger readers as they grow up while also grabbing new readers. Of course they want to diversify their audiences more. That doesn't mean they'll turn their back on their traditional audience (of course they won't), but they'll certainly give more opportunity to something that can bring in a new audience.

And of course Jump has more older readers then Sunday. It has over 2,000,000 more readers >.< Percentage is listed, not numbers, for a reason. The percentage shows that Sunday tries to appeal to all demographics while Jump does not. Circulation just says that more copies of Jump are delivered to newsstands then any other magazine. BTW: circulation isn't the number of people who read a magazine, they are just the amount shipped. Considering magazines aren't meant to turn a profit up to half of what is shipped could be disposed of by the store.
That's not how it works, though. This is the problem with percentages, they're easily manipulated. The percentages doesn't 'show' that Sunday appeals more to all demographics. The smaller your audience, the more rapidly percentages will shift. What it actually shows is not that Sunday appeals more to all audiences, but just that it appeals less to all of them. It doesn't have one audience that it does particularly well with. That's not to say it does horribly, but it's not doing anything particularly well. Jump actually appeals more to adults than Sunday, despite Sunday selling a slightly higher percentage of its magazine to older readers.

As far as the difference between shipment and sell-through, it's not quite that drastic. Yes, circulation numbers don't necessarily equal the total sales, but while magazines may be sold without concern for profit, stores certainly aren't charities. If they're selling around 50 copies of a magazine a week, they won't keep ordering 100 copies. Over time, we can expect the circulation numbers of a magazine to be roughly equivalent to how well it is doing.

Ritual says now for issue 42 Akaboshi (End?). I don't remember anyone posting that here, but it has a ? so maybe it's unsure.

Toriko has a pretty popular internet following, just not on this forum really.

Indeed, I found many other forum where Toriko is popular. Maybe not this forum or onemanga, but mangafox and other forums, same goes to Mago.

A breach of contract led to ending the series two weeks earlier? Is there really a point in that? (assuming it's true)
