Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

I wonder how people are so sure about all the series making it this year. Don't forget that jump start with three new series in issue #1, #2-3 (or was it 2?) and #3-4 (or was it 3-4?)...

I definitely think that the next round might mean the end for 2 (or maybe 3 series) and it'll start from issue #46-51 I think.

No, I'm in complete agreement with you. I don't think anything will end now, in September or October. They will automatically cut three series to make room for the new in issue 1 - 3. That's a given but it won't come until the second or third week in November. More cuts this month, not happening.

It could be two. Last year it was three, the year before four. December and March are the big, highly anticipated debuts, they're not likely to just add the minimum. While it is possible they do less this year, they have in the past, I would not count on it. Especially considering how poorly everything that came out over the summer is doing.

Wait wait wait, so do you mean the "big, highly anticipated debuts" this year were... Meister, Kuroko and Bokke-san? Ugh.

On what basis can a series be highly anticipated? All I can think of is the author, or popularity of one-shot, etc.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

Bokke - san was by a mangaka who had just finished a series that lasted over three years, the mangakas of Kuroko and Meister had done very popular one shots in the summer of 2008. If I'm not mistaken the mangaka of Meister had been runner up in last years Golden Cup. Muddy had been the runner up in 2007 and also was given a December debut. The Golden Cup winners seem to come out in March. But yes, the series that are felt to have the best chance of surviving debut in December and March. Famous mangaka debut whenever the hell they want, the fall is usually for weaker prospects. As has been pointed out: fall debuts have the highest causality rate. That's why.

Tsubasa goes on hiatus frequently and Negima is bi - weekly.
Just feel like correcting the negima statement:
Negima goes on a break every 4 weeks. It's rhythm has been for a long time now: 3 chapters released, 1 week break.

Never heard of that one. Do you know what it's called?

The Golden Cup winners seem to come out in March.
So the winner of this year's Golden Cup will be serialized in the spring with that series from the author of Dogashi Kaiden that ran in Akamaru?

Couldn't find the title in the old threads but let's assume he did something at some point to make someone at Jump decide it was worth their while (and money) to allow him to take up precious space in their magazine. At some point he released one shots in Weekly Jump and/or Akamaru that were popular with fans, earning him serialization. Most likely they were highly popular and he was serialized at a time of year they like to make high profile debuts. The only specific time of year where every magazine, irregardless of genre or demographic debuts one or more new series :)

There is no guarantee it will be the spring. The last two winners, Beelzebub and Mago, started in early spring. That doesn't mean the winner has to start then. The only guarantee is that the winner will be serialized. The runner up likely will too.

Will the star of summer's Akamaru Jump (the one-shot by the creator of Dogashi Kaiden) be serialized too? I assume the most popular series in Akamaru is always serialized two seasons later?

I'm not sure about Akamaru. I don't know as the mangaka of the most popular one shot is given serialization or given a chance to release another one shot in WSJ. It may be on a case by case basis.

I'm curious who won the first two Gold Future Cups. I can't seem to find any information about it from before 2007, the third year.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

I have my doubts. I'd be happy with less Kanda and more Lenalee and Lavi. I'd have preferred one of them on the cover or maybe Tyki Mikk.
LENALEEEEEEE~~~

(late post is super late) The most popular characters get covers. And unfortunately, Kanda is that guy who's even beaten out the main character for popularity before. Kinda sucks. Speaking of which, does this often happen with Jump series - secondary characters getting the cover? I'm curious to know, since I don't actually read most series and don't pay that much attention to covers when they're not for the double issue.

On the subject of cuts in November, another long-dead topic that I feel the need to comment on, I could see it being four series - the bottom 5 lurkers and Wajimania, which is so short it wouldn't free up that much space by being cut anyway. If Jump has done it before, it can and probably will do it again - unless tank sales surprise everyone, and they might. If that's the case... maybe Kagijin would get cut if HxH returns? If it's as dead as it currently seems, it won't have the chance to be a surprise hit like Medaka and Akaboshi, with October tanks before a potential November cut, will.

So who was the runner-up in this year's Golden Cup - what was that series about again?

The first winner for Golden Future Cup is Sakamoto Yuujiro for his one shot, Takaya -Otonari-san Panic!!-. And the second winner is Amano Youichi (the author of Akaboshi) for his one shot, Usagi to Kame to Strike. The third is Shiibashi Hiroshi (author of Nuraruhyon no Mago), the the fourth is Tamura Ryuhei (author of Beelzebub).

Looks like Sakamoto has not been back since Takaya ended. That means Over Time was the serialization Amano did after winning. Interesting stuff, thanks!!

It's possible Kagijin is cut in October, ahead of the two older series. It will have enough chapters by the middle of the month, as many as Muddy or K.O. Sen when they were canceled.

I'm not sure anyone knows who won this years Golden Cup. It just ended a few weeks ago. For those of us who don't know Japanese we probably won't know the results until they are serialized. If someone else does find out, hopefully they'll post the results ;)

Oh, there are results! Sorry, I must have been confusing it with something else - was there one where order of serialization related to... something like that? Or...

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

This ToC is iffy for me. I mean I don't really care about anything listed past Nurarihyon, so I guess it's good that nothing I like is low. Also, Kuroko is in the top 5 (I think), so that is good news, and Mago is in it's somewhat normal place. The thing that makes me iffy on this ToC is no One Piece :crying. Does anybody know how many breaks that Oda has taken this year? Oh well, I guess he deserves them, but this one couldn't have come at worse time :darn.

At least next week looks good. One Piece will be back and Nurari colors and a possible cover. Nurari colors are always good, because they generally come with a cool calligraphy style drawing. Let's hope Kuroko can keep the good streak going.

I can't believe Wajimania is higher than Mago or Toriko
