I think the volume cover art, itself, affects the tank sells. There is still lots of people who doesn't know about Akaboshi and Medaka. So, I think people normally judge mangas by its artwork first, then they read the manga to know more detail about it. So, I think the volume cover plays kind of big part of tank sells.

Of course, for people who are unknown with the actual manga, the cover is mostly the sole-medium which makes them actually buy the volume.

It's not good to judge a book by it's cover, but it's the most common thing to do.

completely agree with cover getting people to buy volumes :D

whenever I go to a Japanese bookstore, volume covers and artwork often times got me interested in some mangas, and lead me to learn more about them. (not necessarily buy them, but still, they got my attention.)

it definitely works to get people find out more about mangas that they don't know.

Here's an update on pre-sales on Amazon with the ranks

Medaka Box 1-159

Akaboshi 1-2025 (you'll need one amazing cover to save this manga)

Why's that? It's on Amazon, it's only a small part of people who buys manga through Amazon. There are far more places to buy manga from, Amazon sales alone don't mean shit.

I think Amazon is a good reflection on how it will do in the upcoming weeks. You just have to put two and two together. If it's not doing good on Amazon don't except it to do good in bookstores. Try to be open minded when looking at different retailers including ones online like amazon. ;)

Amazon is one of the most popular retailer in japan. Even oricon has partnership with it, if there is a product on oricon, they will always have a link to amazon for that product. In fact, most of product posted online, especially thing like manga or anime always have a link to amazon, it's that popular. it means a lot xadyu.if it does well on amazon, it will on the charts, I've been monitoring amazon for more than three years

Also, sales work in patterns, if a gap is this big in one venue, you can imagine how big the gap would be in other places.

Indeed, Cross. The only manga I know which sales are not that great on amazon but sold greatly in other places is Toriko.

Then, do you know the ranking for the other series' first volume, like early volume for Gintama, Reborn, Sket Dance, Psyren, etc. I know that Gintama, Sket Dance, and Psyren didn't sell well on their first volume.

All of their first volume, I think are among the hundreds both pre order and after that. I don't keep tab of everything, so I can't remember everything completely. But I do remember Reborn getting a surge when Hibari is first introduced, introduction of Mukuro also give off a big surge but the biggest came with the Varia arc D.Gray has already been high since the beginning, I think it's the fastest to grow compare to Reborn and Gintama. Jump manga are mostly predictable in term of growth. When an interesting character is introduced or an anime is on air, it will rise. The most surprising usually come out of smaller magazine such as GFantasy. One word: Kuroshitsuji, dear god, Kuroshitsuji....

I asked that for Psyren not long ago, but no one replied. And really... Akaboshi's ranking on amazon is inconsistent as fuck. It may be under 2000 now, but it was above 800 just yeaterday, for Christ's sake. If it constantly ranked below 2000, I'd take it as an indication of something, but it's oscilating between abysmally low and not that low at all.

Psyren first volumes is low on Amazon, and didn't chart into the top 30 of oricon for the first two or three volume, IIRC

Is Amazon's ranking based on numbers of onlin-onrder or numbers of searches?

online order off course, but the more popular a series is more people will buy it. Also, on the page it clearly said before the number:Amazon.co.jp Sales Rank

Just a little information, while Amazon is an accurate one, the Jbook site even more accurate. Unfortunately, they only give out the ranking of the manga when it is released. After the manga is released, you should check out the site to find out it's ranking

Amazon pre-order rankings are notoriously inaccurate. It can have some bearing in the truth, but it's not enough to draw a conclusion on that alone.

Certainly not, however it may just be foreshadowing what's to come, seeing as the gap between the two is pretty large, so we can assume that, even if it's not by the same margin, Medaka will probably sell more than Akaboshi the first time around.

Medaka has NisiOisin' name attached to it. It's a bigger promotion than some cover
