Hi, I'm a newbie here. Previous threads related to my question is probably

out there somewhere but I can't find it...

I'm still getting used to the forums ㅠㅠ

So admins, feel free to remove this thread if you think this thread is

inappropriate.

Anyway I was wondering; what makes a scan LQ/MQ/HQ?

Is it just a subjective thing (eg. LQ = messy, HQ = clean)

or is there any rules to 'classify' the scans?

Such as LQ = no cleaning and HQ = good white/black/grey without

over-leveling, etc?

Re: Question: what makes a scan LQ/MQ/HQ?

Pretty much. LQ is just bare minimum cleaning, if any, at this point. Wipe out the text, maybe level, put new text in.

MQ is more in-depth. Proper leveling, clearing out the noise (dirt, flecks of grey, etc) in the blacks and whites and all that jazz.

HQ means all that MQ, plus redrawing the panel frames, cleaning up any patterns and getting all the noise.

I think there was a thread here explaining the scanslation grades, but I dunno what happened to it. Last time I saw it was a while ago, though.

That's not the one I found way back when, but still a good idea of what's expected. :)

Re: Question: what makes a scan LQ/MQ/HQ?

That's just MH's bias opinion on grade. Everyone has their own view on what quality is.

I personally grade quality based off the scan itself.

For example, a low quality scan will still be low quality even if you redraw and clear out the noise, and as such, a high quality scan (Meaning tankobon-like.) will still be high quality even if you don't redraw. You really can't "judge" the quality of a release based off how much work was put into it, though there are a few exceptions, such as Maximum7.

There's no middleman to me, so medium quality (lol at medium-high quality, the hell is that?) of any sort doesn't exist to me, either your release is high quality or it isn't.

HQ mag scans can be turned into something pleasant to look at without redrawing all the patterns (with filters and such). That's what I'd call MQ/HQ. And a stylish typesetting also helps.

LOki is right. A proper scanned pages can be clean without too hard. Another point is that the original size of the raw also helps. If you can get higher resolution then you can clean much better.:byakun

Take example, Manga Editors like Ju-Ni & Maximum7 always use high resolution raws for their release on Bleach which about 2000 pixels width & 3000 pixels height. They only resize after they have completely finish, which make them look popular & sexy for the final product.:yourock

Re: Question: what makes a scan LQ/MQ/HQ?

Despite their high resolution, it takes a painstaking effort to make them HQ . It's still cheap ink on recicled toilet paper, at least for Bleach (and WSJ) raws.

Sigh, image dimension does not denote the quality of a scan. The quality of an magazine/tankobon scan is judged by paper and/or ink itself (Along with image compression, I guess.). Big != HQ.

You forgot the scanner itself and the people who scan them.

Re: Question: what makes a scan LQ/MQ/HQ?

It's all subjective.

Image dimension does denote the quality of a scan to a certain extent.

HQ doesn't mean making everything perfectly black and blah blah. It's all subjective.

That's what I meant to say. It is true that image dimension does not denote the quality of a scan, but it depends on the Manga Editor itself too. Big Raws--->Speed Scan= still resulting in LQ....
