So, in inspiration of my boy @Stormsfury and his Weekly Highlights, I decided to create this thread for the sake of disscusing this year as a whole for Fairy Tail. Since 2017 is so close (it's already started for some) how about we recap on the cons and the pros from 2016. The format is a lot like the Weekly Highlights format but with a few tweaks here and there. Rate the year out of 10 and discuss the best and worst times of the year in a format like this:

Best Spell of 2016: Fairy Law - that spell was in the dark since Battle of Fairy Tail arc so its very nice to see it back

Acnologia's appearance in the war, August on his stomp festival, Zeref telling Natsu their backstory, Irene's backstory, Partial END's appearance.

MVP of 2016: Dimaria Yesta
Maybe not the most "valuable" player as regards to the plot itself, but for me she definitely is. Honestly the best character in Fairy Tail that Hiro gave us this year. Her design (especially), characterization, magic and potential are all on top. Even though she ended up being wasted by Hiro himself, she'll still be the princess of the Spriggans for me.

LVP of 2016: Natsu Dragneel
His role in this arc had no single worth for me, mostly because all the overdone amounts of attention he got. I mean, he faced THREE Spriggans whom should've faced the more ignored characters in the series like Mirajane and Gildarts, or whatever character that isn't part of the guild itself.

Best Quote of 2016: "I am called Irene. I do hope we'll meet again someday... O great Acnologia." - Irene
Keep on shading the strongest character in the series, queen.

Best Spell of 2016: Age Seal
A spell that stops time itself, damn. At first I didn't really like how overpowered Dimaria became due to Hiro's choices, but then I realized this is the sort of strength one of the strongest mages should get. There's one negative side, plot armour always comes to play for people that face Dimaria. Also, f*ck people who say stopping time isn't absolute n n n n.

Best Chapter of 2016: Kagura vs. Larcade
During the whole arc I complained about side character not getting spotlight. But then, Hiro created the most random but awesome match-up ever: Kagura vs. Larcade. Not was it only an amazing show-off for Kagura and a perfect introduction to Larcade's magic, in all honesty it was also an amusing fight.

Worst Chapter of 2016: The One Most Respected
This was.. I don't even want to talk about it. A mess.

Best Fight of 2016: Crime Sorciere vs. August
When you realize that the best fight of this year is only four pages long, you know something is completely wrong. I'm not even kidding with this.

Worst Fight of 2016: Natsu, Lucy, Happy & Makarov (& plot armour) vs. Jacob
Ew.

MVP of 2016: Acnologia
As hard as it is, I have to choose Acno over Laxus. He made beating Ishar's strongest look as easy as crushing a bug, stroke fear in the Spriggan leader August, made Irene refer to him as "Lord", and him making a hit list on all 7 dragon slayers gives me chills. Not to mention he's a one handed killing machine that hasn't showed any signs of weakness and is treated with so much respect by August, Irene, and Zeref. When the top 3 strongest Alvarez guys put so much respek on your name then you know you've made it as a character.

Let's be real here, if it weren't for Universe one or Natsu's heat resistance then this show would have two dead main characters (Natsu and Lucy)
Best Chapter of 2016: Chapters 495 and 470
Gildarts's and Acnologia's return? How could I not include these chaps?!
Worst Chapter of 2016: Chapter 500
Ok, what really let this chap down was all the hype surrounding it. It was a monumental chap in the series. If the events that happened in chap 500 happened in a less important random chap then maybe it wouldn't be the worst.
Best Fight of 2016: Sting vs Larcade
Ik that I give Larcade so much crap, but the fight itself was great. The choreography and seeing Sting shine was a bless.
Worst Fight of 2016: Natsu vs Neinheart
Again Hiro... Why did you create him?

Rate 6/10: I somehow enjoy this Arc so far tbh it has it's good and bad moments.. The rate could be different if in 95 % side characters wouldn't end up as a hype tools bu team up with FT members in larger groups to take out Shields and if there wouldn't be a fake drama in order to develop ships there are other methods to do that without taking anything from chapter and fight...


MVP of 2016: Kagura and Laxus.. Kagura receives awesome character development and chooses good of others over her own goals despite a few seconds ago she was reminded about her loss I love how Hiro shows her struggling to the bitter end my boy Laxus is also growing up and showing that he is ready to take care over the FT guild..

LVP of 2016: I will go with Jacob here despite he still has his secret technique " Closed Eyes "...

MVP of 2016: Irene Belserion (disregarding that last chapter)
The only one to remember the objective of the war. Temporarily got rid of Acnologia. Pushed Zeref closer to his objective, Fairy Heart.

LVP of 2016: God Serena
I had high hopes for Ishgars strongest but he was blitzed, resurrected then rekt. Not his year.

Best Quote of 2016: “I have now assembled a perfect, impenetrable battle formation. Do you still dare to come here, Fairy Tail?" - Zeref
Ultimately didn't turn out great, but when he said it I was

Best Spell of 2016: Universe One
Compressed the battlefield and brought everyone closer together, Resurrected Gajeel, got rid of Acnologia, and it was shiny.

Best Chapter of 2016: Sting The White Shadow Dragon
My boy put in the work!! I was so proud of him

Worst Chapter of 2016: 500
I have no words

Best Fight of 2016: Laracde vs Sting (Rogue and Kagura)
I quite enjoyed members of other guilds taking down someone who's considered one of the big 3. Usually that's Fairy Tail territory.

That was....Yeah let's stay away from that.

Rate: 7/10
The pitfalls of the this year's Alvarez arc (fake deaths, unemotional real death, illogical fights, nerfs in those fights) unfortunately overshadow the highlights (Acnologia's entrance/announcement of his goals, North S12 stomp, Irene-Larcade introduction/backstory, gathering of S12/Gildarts' return, Jellal/Sting/Kagura/side guild importance, relationship progress in the big 4) which some have been the best in the series. Still overall good but inconsistent especially towards the end of the year.

MVP of 2016: Sting Eucliffe
Saber got destroyed early in the year but Sting came through when his guild needed him the most plus showed that side guild characters actually matter to the story along with enough glo up over the timeskip to defeat Larcade, who if he's done done is a disappointment, but even to challenge the 3rd strongest S12 is good enough for the mvp.

LVP of 2016: Gray Fullbuster
This may be unpopular but there's truth to it. Gray was basically hidden through Part 1 of the Alvarez arc (before Irene reconstructed Fiore) so he was like Lisanna for a good while didn't do much of anything important. He had an intense, very good fight with Invel but regressed in a bad way which showed in END vs. Gray, although it's mainly due to Invel and a bad set up.

Once I read this line I knew some shit would go down, and it did as expected.

Best Spell of 2016: God Soul
From Chronos's reveal to learning of Dimaria's ties to Mildian to making craters and Age Scratch, it was godly.

Best Chapter of 2016: 499 - Gray and Juvia
Whole chapter was very lit and very sad at the same time, it got undone but still was probably on the best overall chapters from FT, top 5 easily.

Worst Chapter of 2016: 500 - Fire and Ice
.....followed up by really the main cause to people not trusting Hiro's hype lately, chapters like these.

Best Fight of 2016: Larcade vs Sting/Rogue/Kagura & Sky Sisters vs. DiMaria
Side guilds that we all mess with tag team to face my favorite S12 is an easy choice, it was really dope but it's a toss up to the SS fighting Dimaria, from the Chronos reveal to Ultear's arrival to Sherria's sacrifice it was one of the best fights in FT period.

Worst Fight of 2016: Laxus vs. Wall
Natsu's one or two shot on Neinhart I couldn't even count as a fight but it was pretty much trash. But for a fight fight has to be Laxus vs. Wall, when the ending to the fight makes you hate the entire fight >> what happened for me, action is good but it was whack overall.

Best Moment of 2016: Spriggan 12 and Zeref reunited
Yeah this was an easy one. Favorite group villain shot since Atasuki

MVP of 2016: Irene Belserion
She's easily the Spriggan 12 member with the most outstanding achievements this war. Using Universe One to chase Acnologia away from the battlefield, even if temporarily, teleporting Zeref to the Guild Hall and saving him and the Black Carpet the trouble of going there on foot, being the one Zeref assigned to extract Fairy Heart, enchanting all those Berserkers and inadvertently causing the death of Makarov Dreyar, I'd say the things she's done this arc are enough to put her up there.
LVP of 2016: Jacob Lessio
Holy crap, from wanting to solo Acnologia to being afraid of looking at a girl in her underwear. What on earth went wrong here?
Best Quote of 2016: "Darkness is neither good nor evil. Darkness is a power that exists in everyone's heart."
This makes the war feel more gray as opposed to a battle between good and evil.
Best Spell of 2016: Universe One
Just the name itself is enough to send chills.
World Reconstruction Magic. Bruh...
Best Chapter of 2016: Chapter 486- The Fourth Guest
Bradman using his Second Seal, Oracion Seis showing up in the North and followed by Irene moving out to challenge Acnologia. This was all sorts of hype.
Worst Chapter of 2016:Chapter 500-Fire and Ice
Easily the worst piece of garbage I've had the displeasure of coming across in manga, the only other chapter that tops this is Chapter 700 in Naruto.
Best Fight of 2016: Dimaria Chronos Yesta vs Sherria, Wendy and Ultear
Third Origin is easily my favorite power up this arc. I loved the teamwork involved in this fight, from Ultear cancelling Age Seal, to Wendy buying time in Dragon Force for Ultear to use Third Origin on Sherria, then Sherria using her God Slaying Magic to take down Dimaria in her God Soul, this was a battle I enjoyed from start to finish.
Worst fight of 2016:Natsu vs Neinhart
Completely unnecessary, contrived and it shat on an arc that was already failing to keep the power levels constant.
Best Moment of 2016: Zeref and Spriggan 12 reunite in the Guild Hall
No lie, this chapter literally had me screaming the entire weekend once the spoilers were out.

 

[Aizen]

Rating : 4.5. Though I gave the chapters themselves pretty high ratings throughout the year, i feel i was a bit generous with many. Looking back there was far too much nonsense this year for me to consider giving it anything other than subpar, despite some of the strong moments.

Yearly Highlights :
MVP : August easily. This character managed to do something that imo FT does not do very well and be complex. His charisma with his speech to Jellal was solid. His care for his comrades and willingness to talk and listen with enemies is quite refreshing from the norm. Finally his fight with the OC and Jellal while not very long and sadly mostly off paneled, was still badass with the parts we did see. Simply put the man has presence, and that's a big deal to me. Acno was solid too, and had some badass moments. Irene would have been right there, but she kinda went downhill this last chapter for me sadly. Sting is also worth mentioning as having improved by a large margin for me this year. One of my least favorite character coming into the year and now he is at least decent.

LVP : Well not to hate but there were quite a few i could put on here..... However i chose Natsu since he really had no good fights. The two he did have produced the "This is Natsu" editor line with Jacob in the dirt in the background. Also the Neinhart one shot was absolutely awful, as it killed any point of Irene building him up, plus Brandish's magic did not work on him either, and yet Natsu can one shot him?.....Yeah could not deal with that. His fight with Gray was alright to watch, but had awful setup with both of them unable to check a pulse for some reason. GOI were pretty terrible for having so much hype. God Serena, Jacob, and Neinhart all got bad treatment imo as well.

Best Spell : Universe One even though it seemed to do little but send Acno who knows where and bring FT together. Still a cool spell nonetheless for me, if only for the scale of it.
Best Chapter : 494 brought #squadgoals pic, which got me as hyped for FT as i ever have been likely.

Worst Chapter : 500 was pretty bad because of the Neinhart one shot, and reversing the sad death of Juvia just a chapter earlier with bs. Even a average Gray fight could not save this mess. I was close to putting 516 on there, but 500 just had too many bad things to not put it as number 1.

Best Fight : Basically a tie between Wendy and Sherria vs Dimaria and Sting vs Larcade (with help from Rogue and Kagura). Both were solid fights and really got me enjoying this arc some. Sherria actually having to sacrifice something to beat Dimaria was strong (if upheld ). The Sting fight let him and several other side characters shine, and it was a good back and forth fight with little bs in it.

Worst Fight : Basically anything with Neinhart, God serena, and Jacob in it. Dudes just came off as weak sauce to me by either getting one shoted, and/or just being made out to be jokers.

Best Moment : #SquadGoals for sure. Was such a hype moment and panel.

I'm not gonna pull any punches and post my pure and unadulterated opinion. This arc has been pure and utter trash, the few good things about it were then tarnished by the next chapter release or the chapter after that, it's been an ugly, glorified fairy tail wankfest not to mention the dispicable performance of just about every spriggan and the allies. Fake Deaths, Tasteless fanservice, generig $hitty dialogue, asspulls, pure failure in linear storytelling, no stakes, terrible villains. This is fairy tails bloody war arc? Disgrace

Yearly Highlights:
MVP: Easily August, he's the only person to not pull an asspull or simply straight up not suck, I'm not gonna give a shared MVP because I believe that takes away from the very status. August takes it for me and dear god keep him away from Plotsu, otherwise he's gonna get wrecked.

LVP: To everyones surprise..... it's Lucy Heartfilia. Now all her fanboys and fangirls and all the NaLu fanboys and fangirls can get pissy with me but as I said before, my pure and unadulterated opinion is being put out here, I refuse to pull punches just cause some people will have their feelings hurt, the fact is that Lucy has been utter trash this arc, she has literally dissolved into walking talking fanservice and for her to go from what she was in Tartarous to this trash makes me physically sick, she has been half naked/naked for almost 2/3 of this arc, the fact that the only time she contributed something worthwhile to the actual progress of the storyline was marred with dumb, tasteless fanservice speaks volumes, her storyline with Brandish came out of left field, was poorly executed and planned and turned out to be absolute trash, we also got freaking Aquarius back after less then a freaking year because f*ck actual consequences in this story and f*ck one of Lucy shining moments in this entire damn series, literally the only good thing that came out of Lucy was the fact that she finally has a goal in her life, something that she's actually lacked throughout the series.

Best Spell: This is actually a tough one because nothing much stood out, I guess I'll go for Sand World because it was a really cool concept I guess, the utilisation brings a whole new level to Ajeel's capabilities, it's just a shame that we couldn't see it have more of an effect. I'm not choosing Universe One because the countdown led to f*ckall and the spell only brought people together in the end. (fail Irene)

Best Chapter: The best chapter can go to non other then the chapter that actually made me excited beyond anything when reading the spoilers, got legit chills and that would be Hybrid Theory, we got Acno, we got the revelation of God Serena as a Dragon Slayer with 8 freaking lacrima's, I've also picked this because I felt we were being tricked in some way when all the Gods of Ishgar and Jura were taken down in one chapter, I felt there was more to the story then but overtime I've realised Hiro just doesn't care much about depth or side characters and threw it all away for the lels. There was also the build up to Laxus vs Wahl which I thoroughly enjoyed, the bias may play a small part in that but it does so for just about every fan.

Worst Chapter: It's Chapter 500, Fire & Ice. Literally some of the worst story content I've ever read, that was pure trash that nearly made me gag. I don't need to explain why, you all know damn well why.

Best Fight: It's obviously Sting vs Larcade, nothing this year comes close.

Worst Fight: Easily Natsu, Lucy and Happy vs Jacob, I think I felt these dangerous urges to gouge my eye out throughout this entire crapfest of a fight, pure and unadulterated cancer.

Best Moment: No I'm not going to choose the Emo kid and his trashy subordinates (except for August) all getting back together to have one last evil orgy before getting blasted to kingdom come by Wank Tail... no, I'm going to choose that moment that gave me chills and that was when Acnologia appeared in-front of God Serena, Jacob and August in Hybrid Theory. Easy pick, because the rest was kinda all trash.

Rating: 3.5/10. It's been a pretty bad arc full of pretty bad chapters so while it has had it's good moments, there's been a lot of bad moments to counter that.

Yearly Highlights:
MVP of 2016: Irene Belserion. What can I say, Irene has been one of the most impressive Spriggan we've had with Universe One being the main reason behind this. She sparred with Acnologia quickly too which was interesting, and design wise I really like her xD
LVP of 2016: Gray Fullbuster. Non-existent for the first part of the arc, had a decent fight with Invel and then regressed with the whole edgy "muh darkness, juvia is dead, I must kill E.N.D" thing.
Best Quote of 2016: "Darkness is neither good nor evil. Darkness is a power that exists in everyone's heart." I like this quote as it pushes the whole war past "good" and "evil", and in a way you can say that's applicable to real life too.
Best Spell of 2016: Universe One. Irene changed the whole layout of an entire country, that's pretty incredible so I think this being the best spell is self explanatory.
Best Chapter of 2016: Chapter 499 - Gray and Juvia. I was a bit reluctant to put this at the top because of the chapter that followed undoing a lot of this chapter's fantastic work, but in the end I've got to give it to this one. This gets the spot because of it's impact and emotion between Gray and Juvia, and having them both do a double suicide was very emotional. Juvia's blood transfusion magic to save Gray after though really did push Gray into the darkness Invel had been trying to tap into, and boy did this set us up for some big things, it's just a shame they didn't exactly come. Either way, this was the best chapter of the year imo.
Worst Chapter of 2016: Chapter 500 - Fire and Ice. What can I say? This ruined the great death of Juvia right away. Yes we all saw that it was a fake death but for it to be undone so damn soon after it happened just took all the impact out of it and made it feel like Gray was fighting for a worthless cause against Invel. Another negative note is Neinhart and how he was treated in the chapter. Yes, he has bad durability and that showed, but he could've done more, been more drawn out but no, this enhanced Neinhart got dropped before he could even do anything with his main magic. Poor writing Mashima, very poor writing indeed.
Best Fight of 2016: DiMaria Chronos Yesta vs Sherria, Wendy and Ultear. From the fights in this arc, there are only a few I can actually say I really enjoyed and this is one of them. DiMaria's God Soul was a pretty awesome surprise and the fight's ending was one that I was both really happy with but also a little sad because of Sherria losing her magic. It was good that there was some consequence for actions for once.
Worst Fight of 2016: Laxus vs Wall. Red Lightning. Need I say more?
Best Moment of 2016: Either Acnologia appears and God Serena goes down on him for less than $2 or Zeref and the Spriggan 12 Reunite at the FT Guild Hall.

7/10 There were worse and better chapters, but overall this arc and year aren't so bad

MVP of the year:
Acnologia is the king of everything This guy was stealing every chapter he appeared and even if he was only mentioned, his name itself was catching the attention. I'm looking forward for him reappearing and change the battlefield into one big hole

LVP of the year:
For me the biggest disappoinment of the year was Jacob Lesio. Guy was introduced like a badass and my expectations were high... It was a mistake, I felt almost like he and Hiro betrayed me. Well, at least we know, that he's immune to Larry's magic

Best quote:
"I'm hungry as hell... So step aside boy... I'm going back to the guild" - Gildarts, chapter 495. So casual, so badass and so reliable in the same time.

Best spell:
There wasn't one particular spell, which caught my attention. Maybe Age Scratch by DiMaria Yesta, pretty impressive imho. Also, I like Brandish's magic a lot, even tho I found it way too OP. If she was the enemy of FT, the bs with defeating her would be huge.

Best chapter:
First half of chapter 512 - "Sting, the White Shadow dragon". How couldn't I choose a chapter, in which the side characters get a moment of shine after chapters of being fedder? And who's shining the most? My boy Sting ofc

Worst chapter:
May I choose few? 478: "Stealth". I already explained one reason - Jacob's virgin eyes. Second is fanservis in the middle of fight - I know fanservis is a part of this manga, but I have my limits in accepting it. Then 480: "The Northern Gravestone". Seeing my favourite guild being crucified is the worst thing I saw this year. Beaten up badly, fodderized to hype FT and humilitatation gratis. Thank you very much for such set, I hope never again And finally chapter 484: "Monstrous six". Sting's tears... and calling Lisanna one of the monsters was enough for me to despise this chapter.

Best fight:
Larcade vs Sting, Rogue and Kagura (what a surprise ). And Laxus vs Wahl (though it would be good, if Hiro gave us retrospections of Laxus obtaining Red Lightning, but who cares about details ). Kagura vs Larcade and Acnologia vs Irene were also good, but bit too short. And finally - Natsu vs Gray. The set up was terribly terrible, but fight itself was great, I loved the choreography and felt the will to kill coming from the pages. But ending again... Nothing is perfect after all.

Worst fight:
I'm repeating myself, but Jacob vs Natsu and Lucy (and Mavis maybe). I already explained evething.

Best moment:
There were so many of them! Acnologia killing GS, Chelia's sacrifise, Yukino slapping some senses into Sting, Jellal casting Grand Chariot, Gildarts appearing like a boss, Laxus cheering Mavis up (he's so mature and reliable ), Irene casting Universe One, Spriggan 12 gathering in front of FT guild building and many, many more, which probably I already forgot, but impressed me, when I saw them for the first time.

4/10 This has been a bad year for FT, this last month has been pretty good but the over hyping of and fodderizing of the majority of Spriggans hasn't left a good impression on me.

Irene - Universe One, her confrontation with Acnologia, and just the fact she is such an evil and twisted woman, her past of course was also a highlight.

DiMaria - She had many opportunity's yet she was made out to be a stupid women who blew her chances to do something.

492 Elder Sister & Younger Sister - We finally get to see Yukino & Sorano meet each other, then we see Mirajane perform her best transformation and defeating Hiene & Juliet, and then it leaves us with one of the all time great oh shit's I'm fucked panels.

WORST CHAPTER
501 Mari and Randi - This was just all bad.

BEST FIGHT
Wendy & Chelia Vs DiMaria - This had it all, I thought it was just awesome and the fact that Chelia actually had to sacrifice her magic "forever" added to it.

Lucy VS Brandish - Thank goodness DiMaria came along and put an end to this farce.

BEST MOMENT
Satan Soul Mirajane Alegria transformation and then seeing her destroy Juliet & Heine.

My turn, and i have to say, even if i agree with some posts above (@BluePegasus and @Emperor Spriggan 's are the first to come to mind), Aizen's post reflects my opinion in a lot of points. @Aizen


Anyway, let's start:
And first let me make myself clear. As Aizen said as well, i've been rating the chapters pretty highly overall and now that i look back at the whole year, i feel like this was undeserved. I might admit tha the amounf of salt from the latest chapters might make me biased though, especially regarding a certain character (guess who? cough chapter 516 cough)
I'm having trouble voting for things while taking the whole year into consideration. I fear i might overlook stuff/characters etc and remember more things from eaarlier chapters. Just a warning.
I'll try to be positive despite the obvious disappointment coming from Spriggans, and this arc in general.


MVP of 2016:
I could have said Irene, even if i don't like her. She's op, she's badass. Loved her attitude while facing Acno. A beast, a queen. Sadly, chapter 516 happened. I'm still trying to digest the salt.
I don't feel like voting for Acno, since we've seen to little of him. August would be a nice choice but meh.
DImaria as well, but i disliked when she tried to murder her best friend, i disliked it way too much. So not her either.
Therefore i'll vote for someone who has been forgotten despite the recent shining from her: Wendy.

This little girl grew a lot. Also, i liked how she attacked Irene and said she wouldn't forgive someone who does't love his child. Overall i'm starting to like her personality a lot, and the progress she's showed isn't to be looked down upon, despite what i believed at first (vs Bluenote, even vs Dimaria).
My vote goes to her.

... BUT! There's another character that i want to honor, and this is Makarov.

He was disappointing during a good portion of the year (shitting his pants with Ajeel, not having a fight), but he redeemed himself for good. I feel like he deserves some credit.



LVP of 2016:
Too many names come to mind, i'll list a few: Neinhart, Jacob, Natsu, Gray (come at me ).
Overall several of themare no brainer and peope above me already explained their case perfectly. I'm adding Gray as a personal opinion. I've stated several times how much i disliked Gray's attitude towards END so i won't start the debate again. However i'm giving his name just to make my ost different from others he's definitely not a Neinhart/Jacob/Natsu level of LVP'ness.

I liked Laxus's quote about how he would keep fighting for the safety of his family, despite his condition.
But i think i'll vote for 2 quotes, one that's not badass like a Laxus quote, a Gray quote etc. These are emotional quotes from Juvia and Happy. Both of these moments were extremely emotional to me.

Best Spell of 2016:
I'll agree with @BluePegasus and i'll vote for Dimaria's Age Seal. The ability to stop time instantly caught my attention, i mean, that's too fucking great. However i'll add another vote, tied with Age Seal, which is Brandish's Mass Manipulation, since i do believe this magic has amazing potential. Brandish might have been trashed on by Hiro but her magic is definitely crazy.



Best Chapter of 2016:
I want to vote for 3 chapters especially:

Chapter 475 + 476: Wendy and Sherria VS Dimaria. We discover that an already badass character has a God takeover,and that was pretty cool looking. Then Ultear introduces the concept of Third Origin, we get to see the two girls surpassing themselves, and eventually Sherria unlocks TO with the well known consequences afterwards. One of the best fights and probably some of the best chapters imo.

Chapter 505: Trump Card. Irene enchantment Berserker, everybody struggling, despair of the war... Makarov sacrifices himself to save his family. With the ultimate FT spell, Fairy Law, that we all awaited. I loved this chapter.



Worst Chapter of 2016:
That's hard... Is chapter 516 worse than chapter 500, or are they equivalent... I can't tell. Regardless, in both cases i was extremely disappointed. I don't even feel like talking about that.



Best Fight of 2016:
Above i voted for Wendy as MVP (with Makarov added afterwards), and Wendy+Sherria VS Dimaria as my favourite chapters. So it's a no brainer that i enjoyed this fight a lot, but to be fair i like a lot of fights. Even Gray vs Invel (after Juvia's death) i enjoyed.
Even Laxus VS Wahl i enjoyed, a lot.
But i'm not going to go for any of these fights and instead, i'll go with a fight that wasn't even a fight so to speak.
Drum rolls.... Lucy VS Brandish !!

And no, i'm not talking about this fight although i didn't mind at all

Nah, i'm talking about the real thing. Eventhough Brandish didn't fight for real, this was a very impressive showing from Lucy. That was a very good surprise, and i'm hoping we'll see more of this type of fights from Lucy.


Worst Fight of 2016:
Oh, God... Neinhart VS Natsu was cringeworthy. And that's an understatement.
Jacob VS Lucy/Natsu/Happy/Plot was also mediocre.
... No wonder i listed Natsu, Jacob and Neinhart as LVPs. I hate these fights with a passion.

Best moment of 2016:
I have a few: Zeref and the Spriggan 12 reunion panel was epic; Sting/Rogue/Kagura VS Larcade (the final chapter, with White Shadow Silk thingy spell) was awesome despite me disliking Larcade and the way he was defeated like that; Juvia and Gray's double suicide, despite it being ruined by Juvia coming back to life; Histo God Serena's little dance...

Alright this is it, time for my rating.

Rate: 5/10.
I can't really go any higher than that, since i've been disappointed b too many things lately, and overall this overshadows the positive moments imo. However, this deserves at least the average mark.

Yearly Highlights

Rating - <5/10 I'm not gonna give anything accurate because there's too many chapters, but overall the arc has been below par, so below 5/10.

MVP of 2016: Brandish μ for having a mind of her own, and not choosing genocide. She has charm, and I like her interactions with Lucy/Aquarius/Evergreen. Brandish definitely offers more than the rest of the 12 who specialise in trash-talking and acting hard just before they get fodderised and trolled (sans August). Laxus, Acno and Sting get honorary mentions here. (Previous MVP 2015 was Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki)

LVP of 2016: Zeref Dragneel & Mavis Vermillion. Zeref continues to do little, and when he does something it's in between meh and facepalm. But there's still time for him. Mavis is always low tier for me, and we got so much of her that it triggers me. Tbh I'm being harsh on Zeref by putting him here, but I couldn't help myself to subtly ship Zervis (Previous LVP 2015 was Mavis Vermilllion)

Best Quote of 2016: "Shut you mouth" - Makarov Dreyar, giving a spray to Mavis

Best Spell of 2016: Command T (Brandish) & Melt (August). Brandish whirl-pooling Aqua Metria then relaying it back was pretty cool (magic wise), and August dropped the best nuke of the year with Melt.

Best Chapter of 2016: Chapters 469, 470 and 510.

Worst Chapter of 2016: Chapter 508 is probably bottom 5 for the series.

Best Fight of 2016: Sky Sisters + Ultear vs DiMaria. At the time it wasn't that great tbh, but after re-reading it a few times it was much better, especially from an emotional viewpoint (that was sad). We also got to see Sherria as a woman and Ultear young again . Hiro hit all bases with this one (even if the fight itself was not so spectacular, it was still good).

Worst Fight of 2016: DiMaria oneshotting Brandish. I kidded myself so much thinking that would be a fight. The current Irene fight is lame as well, and because it's a bigger fight it might take the title here.

Best moment of 2016: Acno showing up and oneshotting Serena & Laxus being cured (rubbish that he got 'sick' to begin with smh).

Most Anticipated Character of 2017: Gray Fullbuster. I think he'll erase the OOC nonsense and deliver huge this year. Honorable mentions are Gildarts and Lucy.

Most improved character of 2017: Zeref Dragneel. Has the most potential after a poor 2016.

Want to see... Hopefully Acnologia's backstory. Hiro better keep it real.

Rating - 6/10: Not a bad arc per say but personally the fake bullshit deaths were what really dragged this arc down for me.

MVP of 2016: August. The only Spriggan who's so far lived up fully to his hype. Irene's terrible performance recently only increased my appreciation for how badass August has been so far.

LVP of 2016: Neinhart. This isn't necessarily me not liking the character, it's me not liking the way Hiro treated him. The dude is a support mage, simple as that. He isn't suited for direct combat, and his physical stats reflect that. Historia of Corpses is a really useful magic and if he had stayed in the back utilizing it to the fullest he could have been a huge help to Alvarez. Instead, Hiro decided to throw him headfirst into the front lines against some of the strongest mages in the series and now he's become the laughingstock of the entire arc. He had so much potential and it's really a shame Hiro decided to squander it all.

Best Quote of 2016: "Shut your mouth" - Makarov Dreyar

Best Spell of 2016: Melt. Again, August living up to his hype.

Best Chapter of 2016: Hybrid Theory. God Acnologia is such a badass.

Worst Chapter of 2016: Chapter 500. I don't think I need to go into detail.

Best Fight of 2016: Lucy vs Brandish. In an arc like this with such powerful opponents, it's great that Hiro still found a way to have Lucy shine and to show off her abilities. This was probably the best way to do this, showcasing Lucy's growth and improvement while at the same time preserving Brandish's status as a powerful mage.

Worst Fight of 2016: Laxus vs Wahl by a mile. I know Natsu vs Neinhart is a popular choice for this but personally I don't get all the hate. Sure it was a little unnecessary and pointless but at least it made sense logically unlike Laxus vs Wahl. It baffles me how people can so easily accept that Laxus can kill a Spriggan with a casual nuke and fight on par with one while half dead, and yet when Natsu oneshots one of the physically weakest mages in this entire arc everyone cries bullshit. Seems like a bit of a double standard here.

As for Laxus vs Wahl itself, the ending was what ruined the whole thing for me. Lightning that surpasses lightning? Are you serious Hiro? In terms of ridiculousness and downright stupidity this far surpasses any other PoF moment in the entire series (bar Erza vs Kyoka).

Best moment of 2016: Spriggan group shot. It was so awesome it almost made me forget that half of them already got their asses handed to them by the almighty FT

Rate: 5/10. The main plot hasn't been too disappointing, the majority of the fights however are up there as some of the worst of the series. The Spriggans are are so lame its almost funny and most every fight had to come with a fake death. Which is why so many points are deducted. Personally, a lot of my favorite characters got to shine for the first time in years (Jellal, Kagura, and even a tidbit of Ultear) which is a positive. I also like that Mashima has done pretty good with Erza's character this arc, not too much BS in her fights and she is starting to get a sense of direction in this plot.
Yearly Highlights
MVP of 2016: The Mother of all Dragon Slayers, Irene Belserion. Even though chapter 516 has me a little scared of how Hiro is going to handle her from here on out, I still believe she is the character that has made the most lasting impression on not only this arc but the series as a whole. From sparring with and casting away Acnologia to enchanting an entire country her actions have been nothing but bad*ss and is the Spriggan that has done the most for this war. Her backstory, character traits, design, and magic all make for a villain which I consider one of the best along with Acnologia and ToH!Jellal. Hiro obviously spent a lot of time and effort on her character and hope he continues writing her as impressively as he has since her debut (Lets hope 516 was just a fluke).
LVP of 2016: Every Spriggan except August and Irene. At least they had crazy impressive feats and actually care about the war they're fighting. And the fact that Neinhart got one-shotted TWICE is just embarrassing and lazy on your part, Hiro. Remember when we saw his ominous silhouette and we all got hyped for a monster but we just ended up with a pony-tail, pom-pom wearing idiot, good lord that was a disappointment.
Best Quote of 2016: "To you, they may be nothing more than soldiers you can maneuver...but to me, these brats are my irreplaceable children!" -Makarov
Best Spell of 2016: Universe One. It was wide scale and did a lot for the advancement of Alvarez.
Best Chapter of 2016: 486. We all know why.
Worst Chapter of 2016: Chapter 500. I cringe evertime I think about it.
Best Fight of 2016: I enjoyed Sherria/Wendy vs DiMaria and Acnologia vs Irene equally. For me personally, these were the shinning lights in the heaps of garbage we got. Two of the only fully dragonized Slayers going head to head? How hype was that! I really wish it lasted longer.
Worst Fight of 2016: Enchanted!Neinhart vs Natsu. It's been months and i'm still not over the salt I had when that initially happened. A one-shot?? One of Zeref's hand selected underlings...one shotted by Natsu? No historias or anything? Absolutely horrendous. Natsu shouldn't have been anywhere near the Spriggans if this kind of f*ckery was gonna happen. And what was the point of Hiro powering him up and implying that he was well connected to Irene/Erza if he was just gonna get one-shotted and never talked about again. Jesus god almighty.
Best moment of 2016: Acnologia putting a hole through God Serena. Nothing short of hype. Was a good way to start the beginning of 2016 Honorable mention: The death of Makarov Dreyar.
