Question presented to me in class...

"Will Zoro always need be the WSS that needs all 3 of his blades to keep his title? If he fights with only 2 swords again someone gunning for his title, does he loss the title? Can Zoro only be as strong as he is with 3 swords?"

I'm presenting this question up for discussion because i dont think I have ever seen it discussed here.

Is Zoro as the WSS with anything other than 3 swords, nerfed? That's seems almost sad if true. He needs 3 swords where others only need 1.

I'm split, but I'd like to here from the less biased Zoro followers on here
He can lose the title regardless, especially since he should still be just as good with one sword with just less named attacks. he can't be the greatest swordsman if he can't fight with one sword, tbh

I'm of the same opinion as well but many like to say that unless Zoro has all 3 of his blades he is nerfed when in the grand scheme of things that shouldn't matter.

A skilled swordsman is a skilled swordsman. I dont see how Zoro is nerfed with 2 sword style as opposed to 3 sword style...

Idk if nerfed is the right word, since he's not physically weaker. Rather, his potential output, variety and/or attack power changes if you believe:
  • Zoro's strongest attack will require 3 swords; and/or
  • Zoro has more attacks with 3 swords as opposed to 2 swords

To be the greatest swordsman he needs to be able to hold his title even with one sword.

So if Zoro was the WSS and defended his title with only 2 swords and lost... does he lose the title?

Let me throw another hypothetical

Zoro fights Mihawk. Both are equally powerful at this point...

Mihawk disarms 2 of Zoro's 3 swords and they are both fighting with 1 blade... Say Mihawk wins... Is Mihawks win tainted because he didnt defeat 3 sword style Zoro?

I'd say that yes since zoro wouldn't be using the fighting style he is most skilled at. I would maintain that you shouldn't see more swords as being better or giving an advantage over less swords. it's just different fighting styles and what matters is your proficiency at it. Any fighter would be at least a tiny bit compromised if you throw a wrench at his fighting style. Give mihawk an extra sword or even a different sword and his fighting style could take a hit as well....

It's not like handling 3 swords is easy... One sword style is the easiest one arguably. So Zoro's actually hindering himself in a way.

When he reaches the point of being WSS there wont be that many people who can beat him while not using 3 swords, probably the 3 of the top of my head who could beat him are Mihawk, Shanks and Fujitora everyone else wount be strong enough to beat him

See that doesnt seem right because Zoro starter the fight with 3 swords... he was disarmed... how is that a tainted victory for whomever disarmed him.

The fight started on even footing...

Then why is it considered a nerf when he has less than 3 swords? Does it only pertain when he has the title WSS? Until then, anything less than 3 swords a "nerf"?

I'm not sure that nerf is the right word either, but it's the word that gets throw around the most.

That's the style Zoro is most comfortably using... I doubt 3 sword style is a hindrance to one who has mastered it

Because Santoryu is his primary style, he is at his best with 3 swords.
WSS title doesn't care about the style tho so if he wants to remain WSS he needs to do so with 1 sword as well.
Also, disarming him when he is at that stage should be unlikely despite it being one of Oda's usual ways of keeping him in check.

As someone mentioned, he wouldn't be able to use all of his attacks and the strongest ones. However, if he starts off the fight against Mihawk with three swords where one or two get broken, and he loses, then that's 100% on him, especially after being taught to keep the swords from being nicked and all.

Not sure if it's similar to going from writing with one hand to another.

Ah, right, I read over the part about mihawk disarming zoro for some reason. But yeah, that's all on zoro obviously. If he got disarmed with 3 swords then he certainly does not have much of a chance with a style he has not mastered as much. In context that would be very much like mihawk being the one to directly handicap zoro via sheer skill....

He's certainly one of Luffy's pirate mates, and he was the first to become one.... soo.... maybe?

What's your stand on it?

Zoro is obviously the first mate... There isn't much to debate there.

He is obviously 1st Mate! Lol

There is apparently a large fraction of One Piece fans that vehemently deny it... like WTF?

:shootme

The arguement is that he isnt the first choice to take over crew operations whereas Sanji, Nami, and even Jinbe have shown more leadership. And while that may be true, Zoro is still 1st Mate of the SH's.

1st Mate position doesnt need to be about leadership. It's about being the Righthand of their captain.

Where, on WG? Gotta know who to pick the battle with over there, some people aren't worth it...
Regarding Zoro, he isnt officially the first mate nor vice-captain, despite several people calling him that, in the manga.
I can understand why Oda never set his position as a definitive - because Zoro is more, a captain material, as several people thought, in the manga.

Zoro is the first mate if we go by being the right hand as LExusFlame says, but he's also a capable leader when the need arises. He was the one who told Luffy to get serious on Punk Hazard, and he's the one who kept Luffy from acting less than a captain when Usopp left.

No one has called Zoro the 1st mate or VC in the manga AFAIK, people have mistaken him to be the SH captain because of his ridiculous strength and killing intent but they then immediately question what SH is like then if someone like Zoro is his subordinate.

Zoro does not need to be officially crowned 1st mate in the manga for him to be 1st mate. Its pretty obvious that he is.
