Zoro's a great swordsman, but Mihawk is the best swordsman. Both have different techniques, but at the end of the day, they share the same foundation in swordsmanship. The philosophies and ideas that Mihawk has learned during his time with a blade, Zoro can still apply to his own style. There is no reason to think that he can't or that Mihawk couldn't teach him anything about Zoro's own style. A comic illustrator and a fine arts painter have different styles, but that doesn't mean they couldn't teach each other anything, as they share the same foundation.Because he's a great swordsman with his own style? At best, Mihawk could teach him one-sword style swordsmanship just in case. Hell, with Rayleigh Luffy only learned haki and did the rest on his own, so who's not to say the same happened to Zoro?
Improved techniques because of haki, as far as I recall. Learning better sword techniques is very broad and vague.
Rayleigh's goal was to just teach Luffy haki. Zoro straight up asked Mihawk to teach him more about swordsmanship, to which Mihawk agreed. Their lessons were completely different.
