Re: Vagabond 276 Discussion / 277 Prediction Thread

Gonnosuke?? the guy with the spear brandishing the sign "number one under the sun"? he was super weak. And he had no heart. I don't think he will be much of a challenge for Musashi.
What i want to see is a fight with Munenori. I dont remember if Old man Yagyu has died but a meeting with him is good too. So they can continue their unfinished business. (old men die in winter, is he dead yet?)

Gennousuke is the person he met in the hot springs before he met the old yagyu leader.
He never fought so u can't tell how strong he is.

No, you're mixing it up. He met Hyogonosuke in the hot spring, son of Yagyū Sekishūsai.
Gonnosuke is an actual person who has fought Musashi in real life. The story said he lost to Musashi the first time and won the second time (which is not proven).

awesome! Ittosai is going with Musashi to Yagyu castle. Well at least now Musashi has a bodyguard if more than 1 enemy ambush him. Cause lets face it, he is a cripple.
Ha! I doubt that Ittosai will be a bodyguard. He seems like he wants to play. He's been longing for a worthy opponent in a while. He said he wanted Kojiro to get stronger so he could have a good fight.

I don't know. Musashi doesn't like he will be able to fight someone of that level with his damaged leg.

His grand-son actually. Son of his sixth son or something. Munenori, who's been mentionned lately in Vagabond, was Sekishusai Muneyoshi's son, and became the shogun's swordmaster.

The Yagyu's style of swords wielding separated in two sub-styles, one led by Munenori, the other by Hyogonosuke. Though Munenori was considered one of the finest swordsman from his era, his pupils kept losing to Hyogo's ones.
Hyogo and Musashi once met and had discussions about the art of the sword and shared techniques together. Hyogo is then one of the very few who truly understood Musashi's art but came to the conclusion that it was too special to be used by random swordsmen.

Re: Vagabond Hang Out Thread

can anyone give me a chapter when Munenori was introduced?

Btw, in this part Kojiro seemed weaker than Musashi http://www.onemanga.com/Vagabond/210/01/
but, there are other variables so its hard to tell. Kojiro seemed very focused when he was drawing his sword.

About Munenori: Yagyu mentioned his name alongside Hyogo in chapter 80, and then Takuan elaborated Munenori's relationship to him a bit in his flashback in chapter 104.

Edit:
But if you were referring to his father, Yagyu Sekishusai Muneyoshi... He first appeared shortly in chapter 50 (more in depth in chapter 66).

Yes, you're absolutely right.
Munenori (Shogun's swordmaster) doesn't appear much in the books anyway. He just has Otsu as his assistant/follower at around the time Muneyoshi Sekishusai passes away, but he doesn't meet Musashi at all (neither did they in real life, as far as it's known).

Re: Vagabond 276-277 Discussion / 278 Prediction Thread

Anyone else seeing the significance of Sekishuusai's last line to Ittousai? In effect I interpreted it as, "Whether it was you or a giant bear, the result would be the same, so why would I quail at the idea of you slotting me?"

He knows he's going to die soon as he's ill. He's also old and way past his prime, so, no matter how far he may have reached on the sword's way, he knows he'd be powerless against any significant opponent, no matter that it'd be just a wild beast, or a skilled swordsman like Ittosai.
Thus, having accepted the idea of his imminent death, he has no particular reason to fear Ittosai.

Man, it sure feels like this is going slow when you read 2-3 chapters at a time...

Re: Vagabond Hang Out Thread

i am still baffled at why Inoue introduced an old Matahachi. Why would he do that. ussually narrators are introduced when the story is at its end. That is such a weird move on his part. It does nothing to the story.

I can see that Musashi has gone a long way from the bloodthirsty hick to awhere he is now. But i feel that he still has more things to accomplish, more battles to participate in and rivals to contend with.

Re: Vagabond Hang Out Thread

wasn't that the point though, that Inoue wants to finish Vagabond within the next two years/~100 chapters? This way I can totally understand him getting rid of the Matahachi storyline showing him as narrator.

I think it was Inoue's way of saying the story had left Matahachi behind. He was now an observer, watching from afar while retelling the part he was involved with. And, of course, by being the narrator he finally found the notoriety he couldn't gain from the sword. That was what he wanted the whole time, not to be the hero, but the big man. The person of interest all the townies wanted to gather round.

thats a great point. Im satisfied. Inoue does make a point of putting a definite end to characters he makes. If they dont die that is.

So when is 278? I was waiting for it this week but it seems that it's not coming.

I think I read that Heiji is no longer in japan or something like that (he normally provides the raws), so I guess we're just going to have to wait for the raws to come when they will.
