Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Jump already has 2+ rom-coms with Love-Ru Darkness. :p Than I will just say that WSJ needs more than one, if they are good enough, any genre could deserve more room in the magazine. Ecchi/Romance are aimed at boys just as the rest.
@Shabrak:
Are you talking about Shonen Jump or general Jump? If it is general Jump, then is it just shonen magazine (Shonen Jump, Jump SQ) or all of magazine (seinen and shonen)?

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

I am delighted to see Magico below St&rs. St&rs remains a delightful series, I really hope it can hang in there. Plenty of series have overcome poor early poll results, St&rs can too. When older series like Enigma and Magico crash that can only help.

How are so many people predicting failure before a series has even started? Seriously, unless someone here can see the future there is absolutely no way to predict how the presence of two romantic comedies will do in Jump. They have not had two in the magazine at once in god knows how long, so there is not even recent precedent to base a prediction on. It is silly for anyone here to assume they know how Jump readers will react to a manga beforehand, with absolutely no objective evidence. This happened with Medaka Box too. Everyone here predicted doom when it did not poll well, that Jump fans have no tolerance for ecchi, that this or that action series will survive. Funny thing: two years later Medaka is thriving, quite to the contrary of the conventional wisdom in this thread. The facts are that new non-action has an advantage: they have fewer series to compete against. Every new action series has to compete with ten other series for votes. Only two romantic comedies means that fans of the genre only have two choices. And romantic comedy is a hugely popular genre in Japan, always has been and always will be. Last weeks Oricon chart included eight romance/romantic comedy titles, that is almost a third of the charts. It is likely that there are plenty of Jump readers that enjoy the genre two sustain two series. It is not as though a series needs to rank in the top 5 to survive, both can have nice runs placing in the middle of the magazine. Who knows, maybe the two series will each appeal to different people, instead of splitting votes they develop their own fan bases. And it is not as though Jump does not have a history of popular romantic comedy series. They do and it is a history that dates back to the founding of the magazine. The history of rom-con in Jump is almost as august a their action manga history, with a massive list of recent, popular titles. The only fact we have available is that their have been few recent examples of the genre, Ane Doki being the only really recent series. Before we proclaim that one will fail before the other has even started maybe we should wait and see if it is, you know, any good. Jump has room for more than one example of genres other than action. Everyone who proclaimed that Sket Dance and Medaka Box would meet quick ends has proof of that.

The recent failure to produce a second sports manga is poor proof that there is not enough room for two romcons. Different genre, to begin with. Sports is failing across the board, there are fewer examples of popular sports manga while romantic comedies, of all demographics, thrive. In addition, most of the recent examples of sports manga stunk. From Meister to Light Wing to Dois Sol they were poorly written, boring, generic shounen and the argument could be made their failure had nothing to do with genre but with readers rejecting bad manga. Hoop Men is the only one that genuinely good but still failed.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

This ^^ a million times over.

Looking forward to Nisekoi, stooked Stars is doing a bit better recently and excited that Kurogane remains high.

2012 could be an interesting year. Hunter x Hunter could go back on hiatus, Naruto and Bakuman both appear to be reaching their conclusions plus I've been hearing talk that Medaka Box could be nearing it's natural conslusion with some of the recent chapters. If all this happens there will be ample room for new series to thrive which could create an interesting climate in Jump for the new year.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Next out will likely be Hunter x Hunter. If Togashi gave them twenty chapters it will go back on hiatus in late November/early December. I think Magico will go around that time too. It's been polling really low for a while and the tankobon have never really reached that 500,000 safe zone. From there it is anybodies guess, depending on how many new manga they plan to add next. As Grimm and a whole bunch of recent cancellations have taught us, gag manga does not tend to do very well. Assuming Genzon! really is gag it will definitely have an uphill fight. My opinion on that will change if it is a full page count comedy series, rather than an 8-11 page gag (like Jaguar or Inumaru). It's been a while since they tried adding comedy, hard to say how one would do.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

I think a last place means that HunterxHunter is taken into account in the poll. I don't remember Kochikame ever being last, and since it is the last chapters of the ant arc which are judged, a last place is not really surprising. I'm pretty sure it will rise up once the new arc start to be rank.
But the bottom 5 will be interesting in the next weeks, now that Enigma has stop and that Stars has stopped being dead last, we are without definitive bottom dweller. It's quite different from the spring where the new series were cancelled one after the others.

I guess a first place means that Bakuman has started to be interesting again, maybe I will restart to read it again.

And yes it would be interesting that some of the big series start to stop to give place to their little sisters. Sket Dance is proof that a great serie is not only the first chapters.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Jump readers have the option of voting for Hunter x Hunter and Kochikame, both series are included in the polls. The actual ranking is of little interest to the editors, due to the unique status of each series. Kochikame being such an old manga, and an institution that can't be judged by sales and polls 35 years after beginning. Hunter x Hunter only runs for one or two volumes a year, which remain among Shueisha's best selling titles when released. Only One Piece, Naruto, and Kimi ni Todoke sell more per volume among Shueisha titles. So good polls and bad polls are of little concern to the editors at Jump. They do want to know who is reading each series, their age, gender, etc. which is why the remain on the post card.

First one was a joke, including SQ and other Shūeisha magazines, that's why I used WSJ for the second sentence. :) It has a tradition of having ecchi stories, that's I see no problem in adding a second one, if it's no good it can be cancelled as other manga have been in the past. edit: refreshed the page: ... what Kaiten wrote. XD

Survey: Popular Shonen Jump Manga Readers Give Up on Partway Through
http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-ne...jump-manga-readers-give-up-on-partway-through

Goo has an interesting survey up, ranking popular Shonen Jump manga that readers give up on partway through. With the chapter-load of a lot of these series, it's tough to blame them. Have a look at the list below!

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Medaka Box takes the #4 spot. I think that is the highest so far so I'm glad its been stabilized and grabbing higher spots this year.

I'm fine with the top 2 this week. Even though I didn't like the last arc as much Bakuman grabbing #1 is nice to see. Sket fell a bit but its position is still respectable so that is alright with me.

I'm glad Harusigawa rose a bit out of the bottom 5. I recently started Magico and enjoyed it so its sad that it has been struggling. The next round of cuts is going to be painful I can tell.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Nisekoi will likely be a nice, wholesome shounen comedy that Tezuka would have enjoyed. The one shot was sharply written and funny, if nothing else it has the potential to be a light, entertaining read. For action fans it probably will not resonate. But for those of us who really enjoy slice of life, school life, romance, and romcon it should be it is something to look forward. I doubt any new ground will be broken but a nice, refreshing read is something to look forward to.

Romantic comedy should bring out all of Komi's strength and minimize his weaknesses. As an action manga Double Arts was aimless, the plot and pacing was uncertain, and their never seemed to be a point or direction once Kiri and Elraine's journey began. But the characters were charming, likable, and fun, so much so that they covered up for the flaws in plot and pacing. I genuinely wanted to know more about Kiri and Elraine, I cared about them and wanted to see their relationship grow. That was why it's cancellation disappointed me. At heart Double Arts was a love story in a fantasy setting, trying to turn it into a Jump style action romp is what destroyed it. By writing a romantic comedy Komi can focus on writing the type of story that Double Arts should have been, if he had been able to write to his strengths.

I had feeling like Double Arts was kind of like Magico, but with just little bit more action.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Magico does not remind me of Double Arts. The leads in Magico are generic shounen tropes with no personality or chemistry. He is a "great guy" who is always there when the other characters need him, she is supportive and cheerful, often needing him to save her. And the mangaka reminds the reader of it constantly. Whether cliche or not, Kiri and Elraine were great characters. Even the romance was more subtle: driven by fate to hold hands or die, vs. married early in the series.

40. Senkaiden Hoshin Engi [15.0]
Is it really written as "Senkaiden Houshin Engi"?
That's the how the anime was called, the manga was just "Houshin Engi".

Bakuman and Mago are a bit too new to have people "give up partway through". I mean, I can understand people dropping it, but its pretty interesting to see these two in the middle of this list. O_O

For some reason even though D.Gray-man has gone through multiple hiatuses...it's not on the list! I am taking this as a small victory for all the times it was in the bottom 5 when it was still in Shonen Jump....

And Kochikame vol.999 LOL

It's either that Kurogane's about to get cancelled or it's on trend and the mass demand a quick release? (though unlikely)
