Anime Hunter X Hunter Anime- Fall 2011

Yu Yu Hakusho has a great dub, I really like it. Also, Death Note had a amazing dub also, and Since Death Note's anime was created by Mad House I hope this series gets a great dub also, (Its sad to say but some anime have some really horrible dubs, not that the voices don't match to me, its just that some voices are just overdone and become annoying or too playful, while some nail it head on as too where it can show a wide range of emotions.) Also, FMA had a pretty good dub also, especially Ed's voice, one of my favorites. So I hope if Hunter X Hunter gets a dub, it will be good.

I'm thinking Ocean will get the dub.

Anyone else besides me think Brad Swaile as Kurapika would be awesome?
I would actually prefer him to sound like a dude. He may be adrogynous but
that doesn't mean he needs to sound like a girl. And I think Brad Swaile
has got that calm and intelligent voice that would suit Kurapika very well
and for when Kurapika gets pissed---Yeah I think Brad could definitely pull it off.

Yea I am happy about the Hunterpedia stuff so far, though its a bit hyperactive for my taste, I have trouble reading all of it as fast as it goes by.

Thats for sharing the dvd covers. Argh those supposedly 'fashionable' DVD covers of 1999 series are so embarrassing to look at! That doesn't even look nor feel like Gon. So awful! (they just tried way too hard). The phantom troupe - GI light color covers are nice. I like the 2011 covers too, a bit cluttered with big-heads but it felt like the manga covers, the fun ones at least.

I would pick Eric Vale and have something along his Future Trunks voice. Kurapika's voice shouldn't be a little pitchy but not girly.

Vic Mignogna would make for a good Pitou. Think of his Nezumi voice from One Piece. Something really cartoony and stereotypically villany would fit Pitou well.

Yupi--Chris Sabat (think King Picoolo).

Pouf--Someone who sounds flamboyant

Meryem---I know everyone is going to want Cell. But not me. David Wald for Meryem! His voice of Gajeel from Fairy Tail would be good but a little bit scratchier.

Pitou is very androgynous but I got to disagree on who should voice him.
I don't imagine Pitou sounding feminine at ALL. Pouf would have a more
feminine voice than Pitou would. Though I also don't imagine Pitou having
a very gruff voice either. I see him having a "dastardly" and cartoony voice
and a bit of a feline side to it. Feline however does not mean feminine.
Usually when they have a girl voice a cat like character they try to give
a sort of "sexiness" to the voice and despite what others may think
I don't think that attitude fits Pitou. Pitou is playful and sadistic. Like a cat.
To me if they get a girl to voice Pitou then I feel they are just gonna overdo
it on the "sexiness" and I think it would take away from his character.
While I think appearance is important while considering a voice actor or actress
I think one should also consider the character themselves.

Illumi is a perfect example.

The Japanese sub version of him in the 1999 is atrocious.
Why? Because they just looked at him, thought he was a girl
and gave him a girl voice actor. Of course they try to make her
sound really plain and dry so it sounds more like a guy but
it still sounds like a girl (this is why I'm so hesitant to have
girls in the roles of guys or guys voicing girls. 9 times out of 10
they DON'T sound like the opposite gender.) and it sounds really boring.

The english dub is voiced by a guy named Viktor Atlevich and is excellent.
Illumi actually has a personality and isn't some monotonous dull character anymore.

I mentioned before how the 1999 series has just 8 episodes in Heaven Arena and how the 2011 may end having 10.
Well aside from omitting Hisoka vs Kastro there's quite a bit of differences from the manga to the 1999. Most of these
occur at Episode 41 and beyond. For example:

Episode 41

Hisoka vs Kastro is summarized and never actually shown (remember that in Episode 40 the fight just started really). Hisoka then gets fixed by Machi. Hisoka invites Machi to dinner but she declines.

What's missing is Hisoka's explanation of Bungee Gum and Flimsy Lies: Texture Surprise. Then Machi leaves. After that we get the little character study of Hisoka. The anime does not show this and skips to the next chapter in which Gon and Killua are training with Wing and Zushi.The anime stays the same until it comes time to analyzing Hisoka's fight using Gyo. Instead there's a little ten training montage and then Wing has Zushi use Gyo to tell what color Wing's aura is which is yellow. In the manga they use Gyo to analyze Hisoka's fight against Kastro and they discuss the fight. Wing also talks about the individuality of nen and how Hisoka's abilities may not fit well with another user and vice versa.
The anime skips this.

The biggest change however is instead of going to the whole dealio with Sadaso, Gido, and Riehlvelt
the anime skips straight ahead to Gon vs Hisoka. The anime spends most of the episode hyping up this battle. For some strange reason Gon decides to go into the woods to use nen and of course it's awesometacular and of course Hisoka watches Gon with wanting eyes. Then we get to the fight. That is the Gon vs Hisoka fight. Befoe the match Gon has a few mini-flashbacks to remind us of the time when Hisoka punched Gon to show us Gon's motive for the fight. Hisoka's infamous glowing crotch scene from the manga is omitted. Considering it was in the first ending I say there is a good chance it
will be in the 2011 version of the fight.


Well anywho they then get to the fight which is actually done pretty close to the manga. However a lot of it is shown zoomed in more so than the manga does which probably was easier to animate. There is a brief moment in the manga when Gon does the upside down falling kick (how the hell does he do that?) and Gon sees Hisoka is about to do something with his hand that wasn't blocking the kick. I dunno if it he was going to use a card or not. But Gon understands this to mean he should retreat. This little moment is not shown in the anime. After Hisoka takes the fake out punch Killua and Wing start analyzing the fight in the anime. Though there seems to be more of this in the anime then there was in the manga.

Then it's back to the fight. Gon charges on and punches Hisoka. Hisoka blocks easily.
Of course this was only a feint from Gon. Here we have another little difference from the manga and 1999 version. In the 1999 version Gon simply ducks down does a backflip and picks up the stone slab. In the manga however Gon does some crazy footwork? to confuse Hisoka before Gon jumps sideways and picks up the stone slab.Gon uses the stone slab as a smoke screen basically and is able to punch Hisoka.
The anime does not have Hisoka think "Where is Gon? Where is he?" but just has him looking around. Also you don't get the OH SHIT GON IS LYING IN WAIT moment the manga has where the reader knows Hisoka is about to get smacked but Hisoka doesn't know it yet. Instead the viewer in the 1999 series finds out where Gon is the same time Hisoka does. After this Gon hands back Hisoka's badge and the episode ends. The chapter actually ends with the punch.

What a thorough summary! I also want to mention that in episode 41 or 42 of the 1999 series, it is explicitly shown that Machi is watching the match between Hisoka and Gon. This is a mistake because during the Yorknew City arc,

Machi has no clue who the kids are once the Phantom Troupe captures them. If she knew, Gon and Killua likely would have been worse off and Hisoka's plot would have been revealed through simply having that information revealed.

However, in the 1999 series, Machi knows. And in fact, in episode 59, she confronts Hisoka about it and chooses not to tell any other member of the Phantom Troupe. Considering the nature of the events in Yorknew City, it's a pretty huge plothole.

I was actually going to mention that when I did an episode 42 comparison.
I was watching 42 and saw that and was like "Wait a minute!" Funny
how something like that doesn't seem like a big deal can actually rather
change the story when you think about it. Even if the actions are the same
the motives and what not change.

Also for one who might think I'm being picky with the 1999 series version of Gon vs Hisoka.

Not so. I actually rather enjoyed it and I think the 1999 series set the bar high which
I'm glad because Madhouse will have to do really well to surpass it (and if you are a true
hunter x hunter fan you'll WANT Madhouse to surpass it. A true HxH fan should ALWAYS
want a better Hunter x Hunter anime. Even Madhouse could be better) But also it's not
like the 1999 version of Gon vs Hisoka is impossible to surpass. There are a tiny few
things here and there that can be improved. Plus while the 1999 animation is good
it can be better.

Of course having Gon vs Hisoka be the LAST fight is a major improvement of it self.

So very true, a true fan will always support what they're truly passionate about. I know people are entitled to their opinion, but when I see people go on an all CAPS RAGE about how Madhouses' version is "terrible" or "not as good as the original" and not provide any reasons, I don't even take the time to argue because of their ignorance and their lack of providing ANY evidence or grounds that will back up their criticisms toward the new adaptation. Or in other words, a troll, and you know what they say about these beasts, never feed them .
