I probably should've worded that correctly. I get that a lot of people weren't expecting movie quality but at least some pretty good animation like Hisoka vs that guy in Trick Tower. I'd love that too, but I'm really not that disappointed with what we actually got. But if you look at what Uriel showed with the GIFs there was animation, despite there also being a lot of still shots.
Hisoka vs that guy in Trick Tower was animated nicely. But like I said I would have
gladly taken crude drawings for better animation. For those who don't understand
by animation I mean movement. Pretty pictures is not animation.
And yes the GIFs do show some animation, but that was pretty much the
best the fight got...well except for when Gon got knocked out of the ring.
THAT was pretty nicely done. But then it goes downhill from there.

I fully agree with you. I watched this with the Nippon episode next to it and it wasn't really all that different. Gon vs Gido isn't that important and people need to remember this is an anime that might go 100+ episodes. An average episode of Hunter X Hunter looks better than an average episode of say Naruto.
http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m3...p4x9o1_500.gif

The only time where there were a lot of still images was when Gon dodged some tops. Even then they showed it in the flashback. Many people aren't even talking how well done Kurapica's scene was. Not too mention the incredible music direction.
The Nippon episode actually animated the dodging. Now granted it was hardly the
best animation but at least you have the excuse it's 13 years old.
That may be true, but the average episode of Naruto has more action
and it would be difficult to animate every fight with great quality.
Hunter x Hunter has less fights than Naruto so it should have better quality fights.

Kurapika's scene was done well. But why can't they give that same treatment
to something actually from the manga-that being Gon vs Gido?

Isn't this show made with CGI and what not? I thought CGI was supposed
to make animation BETTER not worse.

Same here, I don't know what the problem is with this whole animation issue. When I was watching the episode, the still images didn't bother me at all, I mean there were more still images than usual but look at what Uriel posted earlier. I wouldn't consider this having "zero" animation, I get that someone was tyring to make a point but that was just generalizing the episode a bit. It might've been sub par considering the potential Madhouse has, but we should save the controversy for the next episode (if there is any, but it's almost guaranteed to have reactions like the ones from killua vs jones, some way some how haha).
The problem is I've been waiting 31 episodes for a good fight and I get still images.
Like I said, if they make Hisoka vs Kastro exceptional then I won't have so much
a problem because then I'll know they were just saving their resources.
But I don't want a series with just pretty pictures and no animation.

And yes I DO expect better from Madhouse and I DON'T think that is a bad thing.

And y'all know that I give credit where credit is due.
But I will criticize as well. And I don't think I'm actually being all that harsh.

Question for all you who like this episode:

Would you accept the same level of quality for Hisoka vs Kastro?

In other words, do you actually LIKE this level of animation or do you just not care
for Gon vs Gido? Because I actually LIKE this fight in the manga and the 1999 version.
I thought Gon dodging all the tops like crazy is an awesome scene and it's not like
it's that long of a fight either. I'm not asking for 30 minutes of movie quality animation.

Yeah, I didn't really see any problems with today's episode. Really enjoyed it, excellent music selection. If there was one detail which I had to nitpick about, it would be that, when Gon got hit while using Zetsu, his face didn't really seem "in pain" as the manga. The face is exactly the same, but the drawing style in the manga makes it seem really painful... I don't know.

I'm not worried about future fights. We already saw what Madhouse is capable of in the Netero ball game, and in various other occasions. I'm curious how they will handle the next episode, though...

Also, white-haired Kastro? That'll be interesting to see!
Oh Madhouse is DEFINITELY capable of making some EXCELLENT fights. I don't doubt they COULD just put the 1999 series to shame in terms of animating fights.

The question is WILL they? Episodes like this make me wonder if they are just gonna give lackluster animation because they think people will watch anyways.

That's actually part of the reason why I'm upset as I am because I KNOW Madhouse can do so much better.

The only thing that gets me by is the thought that maybe they just thought nobody cares about Gon vs Gido---which seems to be the case here.

Wow! Been a while since I posted here and was actually just catched up on the anime <------ been swimming on superhusbands! feels for the past 3 weeks. :hee

This episode was good and the added filler for how Kurapika and his master met was a nice touch. IMO, Kurapika getting beat up thoroughly and shown how very powerless he really is contributed on his decision for imposing the "restriction" in his nen.

As for the animation fight, well... the stills (?sp) happened when Gon is thinking and became prevalent when Wing realized Gon's true goal on this fight. Pretty much as said by many that the reason why it's not as animated well is because it's not really the highlight of this episode... but check out their expressions especially when Wing slapped Gon. It's done really well.

The following are late responses to posts addressed to me. These were posted weeks back and I feel bad if I don't respond back so please just skip this if it's not addressed to you. :^_^

But in the manga, it's the other way around. Killua is the one who looks for Gon's approval, and looks to Gon for decision making. Even though Killua is the stronger one, he sees Gon as the 'alpha' between the two. Gon tends to do things for himself (cried for himself) and can be selfish and inconsiderate, while Killua is the more 'maternal' one who's accommodating Gon, and get butthurt when his standing in Gon slipped.
Stop it! You're making me remember the GonKiru feels on Chimera Ant arc. But really, we should highlight that Gon is a SELFISH and INCONSIDERATE brat more often as it seems most don't pick it up. I laughed hard when someone on youtube says Gon's an asshole for taking Ponzu's tag.

you understand how retarded this argument is, do you? FYI Ghost fighter, dragon ball, flame of recca, hell teachre nube, master of mosquiton, and many other animes ALL aired in the same (or almost the same) timeslot. hxh's airing time has NOTHING to do with what the GMA staff perceive to be the "nature" of hxh.

and by the way, thanks for prejudging me to be someone who's so used to soap operas that my judgment on the 2011 series is clouded, simply because i described 2011 to be "mediocre" and "soulless" (a conclusion by the way that is completely baseless) :eyeroll
If you're not lying about your age, you should have remembered that HxH aired really late where it was put against an early evening news where afterwards the soaps will be aired. I can't remember the exact timeslot and the year it was but it's about the time/period where Voltes V, the one where the villains have angel wings (and the romeo/juliet vibe on it) and one other "robot anime" I can't remember the name of aired at 8/9 PM (against the soaps of the other rival channel). So much for GMA staff perception on what "nature" an anime have nothing to do with airing time. :derp

One more thing: Crunchyroll mistranslated a line that is extremely crucial in setting the tone of the series from thence onward. Instead of Wing saying "I may have awakened an incredible beast," he clearly says "unstoppable beast." I'm actually quite surprised that it was mistranslated to such a degree. The former line implies a positive tone, whereas the latter? Well, those eerie choirs were placed during Gon and Killua's meditation scene for a reason.
Viz's translation from the manga: "Master, what have I done? Have I awoken a terrible monster?"

Um, no. This is not made by CGI. It's still drawn by hand, but instead of using cels they use computers and drawing tablets. They use CGI for visual effects, but they don't use it to do the show 100%.

There is a Naruto OVA made 100% using CGI. The difference with anime drawn by hand is pretty noticeable. Hunter x Hunter is clearly hand drawn, excepting some 3D effects.

That's what I mean. I know they still draw it. But shouldn't CGI for visual effects
and the drawing tablets and all that jazz make it easier for them to animate.

Lemme me it this way isn't the technology they have to animate suppose to be BETTER?

Especially compared to 13 years ago.

Yeah I know. I was probably not very clear when I said "with CGI". I didn't mean that it would be like the Naruto OVA (which looks like a PS2 game)
just that CGI would be used as an aid. Also I'm using CGI as a blanket term for anytime they use computers to help with the animation.

In short improved technology...or so I thought it was supposed to be. :/

Just finished the new episode and I am so pumped up for the next one! The latest one is another blast, I really appreciate how they made Nen easier to understand. Now I have full confidence that madhouse will handle how loaded the information and system setup the HxH world is.

I also don't have any problem with the gido fight sequence, yes there's still frame tricks but the true fight lies mostly in Gon's head. So whether the dodging action is detailedly animated I can do with or without. Bonus if it did but no disappointment when they didn't. The sequence is smooth and illustrated Gon's thought pattern well. One small disappointment goes to them deleting Killua got mocked by random audience guy, that was so funny and some actual interaction between main characters and regular civilians who actually participate in the arena.

And OF COURSE this is a particularly budget episode, as you can see the Korean staffs credits during ED. In my experience that's usually a sign of a limited budget episode. They are saving the local production for the more important part (Hisoka).

I am surprised kastro wears a yellow cape, raincoat much? I can't wait for it, but I won't give too much high hope for the violence. They will censor for sure, I just hope they capture the magician aspect of Hisoka- showmanship, manipulation...that's more important than blood.

Yes, the rest of the animated is animated nicely but so what? I wasn't looking forward to that as much as I was looking forward to the fight.

And I call B.S on "oh the fight doesn't really matter". If it didn't matter than Togashi wouldn't have drawn it and he would have just had
Killlua explain it without drawing it. But he did draw it and he drew it in a lot more detail Canary's fight against the 100 thugs but Madhouse
animated that well. So what's the deal here? Why do I have to settle for still images in this fight? It's not like they've been having fight after fight after fight.
It took 31 episodes without any big fights to get this far and they can't produce some good animation for a fight? C'mon!

I did like that opening. :)

The true fight is in Gon's head. Wow, what an excuse. So if they give still frames to Gon vs Hisoka, don't worry it wasn't about the fight anyways.
It was about Gon's internal struggle. Gimme a break!

Yeah it was too bad that was deleted but hey if they aren't going to animate then it makes sense they would leave the guy out.

Yeah...I'm hoping for that. And I'm hoping it's not just Gon vs Hisoka that gets quality animation.

I hope they at least show SOME blood. Because I mean if they can have Canary vs 100 thugs be all bloody and what not.
Why can't they actually have some blood from the manga. Toned down is fine but I'm afraid they will eliminate it all together

I still feel your exaggerating, but, it's your opinion.
How am I exaggerating?

The episode had too much still images.

I don't want to see still images in an Japanese ANIMATION (that's what anime is or is SUPPOSE to be)

Everyone else either doesn't care and is fine with still images or they don't care about Gon vs Gido.

That's all.

---------- Post added at 03:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:21 PM ----------

If I was exaggaratting I would say HISOKA VS KASTRO IS GONNA SUCK SO BAD IT'S GONNA BE RUINED

but I haven't said that. I said I'm worried and I think I have the right to but I also said that perhaps this episode is bad so hisoka vs kastro can be good.

But really, it's like a crime to have great expectations for Hunter x Hunter.
That if we don't settle for mediocrity then we should be ashamed.

WELL THIS IS ONE HUNTER WHO WON'T SETTLE FOR ANYTHING LESS THAN GREATNESS! }:O

Mrsticky, as I previously said, the still images were done purposely for a few reasons.
- To highlight Gon's thrill and also his recklessness (notice in the still images a spotlight is placed on Gon and his expression highlighted, this could not be expressed if Gon was moving at breakneck speed like in the 1999 series which missed the point and blew their load too soon and had to cut the entire Kastro fight instead of simply just censoring and still showing it).
- To save budget for fights and scenes that require greater animation (specifically Gon vs. Hisoka and Kastro vs. Hisoka)
- Because Gon vs. Gido serves to show us one thing, Gon is reckless, not that he is super agile and a good fighter. It's to show that he is reckless and gets a thrill from fighting even when he knows he will lose. The spotlights placed on Gon in that scene are very important.

Also just in response to Pokyymon from the other page, One Piece has only recently moved to this time slot. For YEARS it aired at night, since New World arc it has moved the Sunday mornings. Have you seen any super violence since New World? I have not. Regardless, each station has their own guidelines and different target audiences, Fuji TV and NTV will not have the exact same restrictions in terms of censorship, it'd be a fairer comparison if they were on the same station. But regardless since moving to it's current timeslot One Piece has dialled it back quite a lot in terms of violence.

Well actually I don't consider the 1999 version to be all that great either. I just appreciate that they tried to animate it.
But they COULD animate it and show the expressions. It's not that hard just

Mid distance dodging shot
Close up slow motion to show expression

repeat

I do think that saving budget is likely a valid reason. I'm just disappointed that it was this episode. Though I suppose it's better than the next.

But Gon IS super agile and a good fighter! Yes Gon is reckless. But he's reckless and talented.

It's like the difference between Akagi and the guy who lost all of his life savings at Vegas.

Gottcha.

They did animate him dodging in the second half of the episode, though.

Are you talking about the manga? If so, I think that's a guarantee. Killua will clearly not be training while he is on the run with Alluka, Gon however will probably continue to get stronger.

save the controversy for the next episode, if this argument stemmed from mere still images then god help us all this saturday. But I really do hope they do something clever à la Killua vs Jones to get around the censorship, this might be the most hyped HXH episode yet.

As long as the Hisoka vs Kastro fight is fully shown with great animation, and it depicts Hisoka losing both arms I'll be happy lol.
