Not safe, just safer. WSJ is trying to preserve it, similar to what they did with Kurobas until it became popular. Can't say I am surprised seeing that NuraMago also got special treatement.
Yeah, this is my impression. It's had slightly better rankings, and the editorial staff probably has more faith in Shiibashi and what he might be able to create. He's kind of been in the WSJ circle even longer than that, having been an assistant to Araki.

So, favoritism? I can't really speak to that, as I haven't read the new series from the last rotation. It would only be to my tastes anyways. But this kind of thing happens often.

So I guess Rurouni Kenshin and Hikaru no Go never made it to the West despite basing themselves among elements of Japanese culture.
Signals from our US publisher seems to indicate a belief that series involving sports would be a hard sale here, so it is probably likely that this sumo manga will be passed on for western release, not to mention that their viz media hikaru no go anime released ended up doing pretty terribly reception wise (not even fully completing the series).

We're talking about the manga, not the anime. Two veeeery different things.

I don't think they're to the point where WSJ is serializing things with Viz or foreign fans in mind, for one thing.

Clearly...but for Hikaru no Go viz licensed both anime and manga, and if they didnt complete the anime then that kind of suggests that hikaru no go property didnt turn out so well for them in the end. I dont think there are numbers or even rereleases of Hikaru no Go manga volumes or omnibuses being made of it here to suggest viz thinks its a popular manga. Only thing theyve done is put its manga up digitally. So Im quite sure viz will be skipping on bringing us this new manga.

Given Jump's recent track record with "western" sports, I'd be way more inclined to look into a manga with something different, like sumo, before I would soccer or baseball. But I usually avoid looking into new series unless it looks like they'll stick around. That's why I can't bother speaking to the debate regarding this latest batch.
Jump's recent history with western sports has been very good. Kuroko (basketball) is huge hit in Japan. Since the anime started, Haikyuu (volleyball) has also started to develop into a major hit. For some reason, soccer manga always fail in Jump. Every soccer manga, for years. There is no rational explanation for it. Jump may as well be cursed. I even saw an article on a Japanese anime blog about it when Tokyo Wonder Boys started. Western sports do fine, it's soccer manga that are cursed. I can't remember the last time a new baseball manga started.

Agreed. Ultimately, the main focus for Jump editors is on experimental manga, some of which has paid off, like Nisekoi, AC, Soma and Isobe, and others which haven't as much, such as iShojo and arguably SC.

Surely, HZ still has a chance of just making it to the West, even if it doesn't turn out to be immensely popular. Of course, it has to appeal to its domestic audience first before it even has that chance. But maybe you're right: sports manga could be a no-go altogether for Viz, for whatever weird reason.

I'm honestly surprised there aren't more series based on Japanese sports. Now that I think about it, almost every one I know is based on a Western sport except stuff like Hikaru no Go, so this would be a pretty good way to make Jump's lineup more diversive. I should go check out that oneshot and see if it's any good.
Traditional sports are horribly unfashionable in Japan. Sumo is for old people.

I wouldn't necessarily write off viz and sports comics. Cross Manage performed admirably on their digital store, and Whistle's digital rerelease isn't doing horrendously either. It might just be that print is no longer viable for the genre

Reading all this talk about experimental manga, "sports" manga, and Hikaru no Go made me think that I really want to see a new series about board/card games in Jump, something like No Game No Life or Chrono Monochrome maybe
I'm not sure how well it would be received, but it might be worth the bet, I mean, I think Jump hasn't had something like that in a pretty long while (because they make those series too merchandise-oriented and send them to Saikyou or V Jump)

Smoky B.B. started just about a year ago. It sucked, though that might just be because of how ridiculously incompetent the writer is. But the previous baseball manga was Mr. Fullswing, which ran from 2001 to 2006. No clue why no one thought of creating a baseball manga in between, but Smoky B.B. may have cursed the opportunity for the future.

Whilst i'd like to think the Illegal Rare colour page is for an increase in popularity its most likely for the volume 1 release beginning June. The issue with the colour page would be on sale one week ahead of the volume release.

That preview page got me, I thought that was a new historical battle manga (think Kingdom). Now that im looking at the picture again im not even sure why. Well heres to hoping the Sumo series is good and gets scanned.

Kurogane the kendo series lasted a year. I don't think they're necessarily that unfashionable.

IR's color page is to commemorate vol 1 release
Also, if the art of the whole series is like that of the preview and with it being about sumo...The chances of it getting scanlated are slim

Though Kurogane sorta survived off of other new series that did worse than it though.

Print isn't available for VIZ editions of most Shounen Jump series. Even YuYu and Rurouni are hard to get. During the recession VIZ stopped printed older series, along with low sellers. Hikaru no Go, Eyeshield, and Whistle went out of print with all the rest. They recently announced reprints of JoJo's, to take advantage of the anime. Maybe they will start bringing more back into print. Back in the mid-2000's Hikaru had been popular with US fans. Whistle not quite as much. I always remember seeing it in bookstores, but it never struck me as terribly popular. American publishers haven't licensed the new generation of popular sports manga (not just Jump) and anime, like Kuroko, Haikyuu, and Yowapeda. I don't know how much hope there is for older series, other than digital editions.

Canceled manga make very poor counter-arguments. Kendo isn't comparable to sumo, anyway. It's not something anyone would watch on TV, but most high schools would have kendo clubs. It's something young people might participate in, or know someone who participates. It might not make a popular manga (Kurogane was not popular), but it's not comparable to something like sumo.

Rurouni just got a reprint last week, eyeshield 21 reprint is potentially forthcoming.

Over Time happened inbetween those two, like ten weeks after Fullswing ended. It wasn't very good though. The artist kinda just makes bombs with whatever he touches. Strange how little that's changed in 8 years for Yoichi Amano.

Smoky B.B. makes me sad with how bad it was. The artist is so promising, but that writer's pulled him down into the shitter two series in a row now.

I actually enjoyed Over Time somewhat, despite it's flaws. But I definitely see why it didn't catch on.
