Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

That dark? The authors clearly wanted to hide who is, we are not even sure if it is him. If it were mere suspect, the author wouldn't bother.
No, we know that it is him. He has the left side of his face burned!
Here, a lot of his faces:

And for the summary of chapter 23:
And proving that it was in fact him, Shouto Todoroki, that overheard Iida and Ochako conversation:

Summary made by Bond en Avant in Arlong park forum!

How the Sports Festival works: All classes in each year (heroics, support, management, regular...) compete with each other to determine who is qualified to proceed to the main event. The qualifying athletes will represent their entire year.
Deku is hesitant to show the world that he's the next symbol of peace, as he believes he's not ready (and starts muttering his reasoning). All Might is taken aback, but says that he knows how he feels. "I won't force you, but try to remember how you felt during the beach cleanup."

After class ends, a large gathering of students appears before Class 1-A. Kacchan infers they're here to scout and ascertain them before the Sports Festival. One of the students (I'll call him Lazy Eyes) tells them that he's from the Regulars Class. The Heroics Class is generally seen as the best class within the year, but there are several other classes full of students beneath them. Apparently, depending on the students' performance in the Sports Festival, the higher-ups could choose to bring some students into the Heroics Class and vice versa. (He's very confidently telling them that he'll be moving up and taking over their class.)
Another student, this time from 1-B (I'll call him Crazy Eyes), came to their class because he heard that they fought with some villains and he wanted to ask some questions. But after seeing them in person, he sees that they're a bunch of dicks (As in...penises. The actual word. I've never seen it used that way before...) and tells them not to embarrass him during the Festival.

Sharpie complains to Kacchan that everybody's got beef with them because of his attitude. Kacchan's reply is a simple "Who cares? It doesn't matter as long as we beat them". Sharpie, Falco, and Luchadore agree with him (Electric Boy says this is just gonna make us more enemies).

Deku remembers his friends declaring their reasons for becoming heroes. He has regained his resolve.

On the day of the Sports Festival:
Before this, it's always been the 3rd Years who garnered the most attention, but this time even the 1st Years' performances are highly anticipated due to the USJ villains fiasco. Kamui Wood, Mt. Lady and Roadblock Man have been given guard duty for the event.

To keep things fair, the students are not allowed to wear their individual hero costumes. Everyone has to wear the Yuuei sports uniform (Notice how the uniforms have UA written on them? I find it a really nifty design).
Ice Fire confronts Deku. "All Might seems to be rather fond of you. I don't intend to pry too far into this matter...but I WILL surpass you."
Deku agrees that Ice Fire has a much stronger quirk than himself, but after seeing how the other students are aiming to be number one, he's not planning to back down either. "I will also do my very best!"

Woooaaaahh!! I'm so excited for the next chapter now!! Let's go Sports Festival!!

The left side of his face is black so it's normal. Don't know about the others but I immediately recognized him, I don't think his identity was supposed to be hidden TBH.

Okay, you guys won, but mere suspect continues no fun and interesting. Tsuyu already said in front of everybody that All Might and Midoriya powers are similar, nobody give much thought for this at that time. The relationship between them is also clear.
Authors don't direct the attention of the reader like that because of silly suspect like that. Even envy is not a plausible reason for this. There is something and that's why he reacted that way.

Anyway, let's see...

You're thinking to much of that panel. That panel was just showing that he overheard the conversation. The interesting thing about that was what kind of reaction would he have about that, showing more about his character.
That reaction already happened in chapter 23!
There is no bigger mystery or plot about that scene.

You already know what happened, unfair! :gwah
I didn't use my knowledge about the story ahead when I was in chapter 20 and the rest in chapter 15, but well... I cannot expect people to be as thoughtful as me.

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

Understanding that panel as nothing to do with later knowledge. First, it was obvious that it was Todoroki, I don't know how didn't you recognized him(Well there is a reviewer that saw Mount Lady and thought that she was showing her bare ass in this scene: http://2.p.mpcdn.net/28495/491629/8.jpg , So ...).

The white aura around his head is a technique used in manga to show a character awareness, basically showing that at that time he was hearing them. Also they are in the line to get food and he is a little ahead of them and he is looking behind while hearing them. Is not like he was hidden spying on them and also his face was the same as ever, I don't understand how you got the emotion envy from a stoic face.
The only really question was what he would do with that information. Put one on one and get that Midoriya has All Might powers, or something totally different?

The author wasn't in any way being subtle on that scene.

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

What I really like with MHA is how the author makes uses of pretty simple but really powerful cliffhangers which means even if the chapter is relatively average (first 12 pages or so - is focused is getting the reader of more things) each chapter is written so that that last 6-8 pages introduce a really strong cliffhanger that makes people reading the series want to read even more.

I mean that double page at the end of ch23 with Midoriya saying he'd give his best his the athletic festival was totally epic. And that panel with the guy from the guy from the Normal Section telling the people from 1-A not to do anything embarrassing during the festival was so funny I literally exploded in laughter (I mean Midoriya and the Class President going all *STAREEE...* at Kacchan was awesome). I'd say this was the best part of the chapter, showing the characters were expecting Bakugou to actually go BOOM on the other guy when he heard this - pretty sweet he actually didn't which shows he's made a lot pf progress.
Once again, I'm hyped for next chapter... Hopefully I get to go digital for books soon this way I'll be able to buy vol.1 and vol.2 (out on January 5th).
I gotta say Shueisha's been going strong these last few years in terms of hero manga hits, first OPM now MHA. I wonder how a crossover OPM-MHA would actually go

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

I wonder how this Sports Festival will be. Will there be fighting, or sports, or a combination of both? Im interested, though I hope this arc will be longer than any of the previous ones. The pacing of the series is fast as hell, I think it needs to slow down a notch if it wants to go a long way

I think it will be a combination of both. I think they are going to invent some modalities suitable with the environment of the world full of heroes. Do you know Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei? It will be something like Mahouka competition arc. There they made many modalities in accordance to what the series was, a series about magic. It will be the same here I think. However, some popular sports like Baseball and Soccer will be present as well, with, maybe, some modifications. I'm looking forward to seeing how each student will use his power in each competition.
I think it will last from 10 to 20 chapters. I think it is more than enough.

I hope its 15 or 20. Never expected the series to go this fast, All Might is almost out of gas with 24 chapters. Btw have the shipping wars started yet or naw?

Well, it is not the first that the settlement "the mentor who dies to strengthen his apprentice" is used. The main character is Midoriya, not All Might. I don't see this fast pace as something bad. I think the Sports Festival will serve as stage to the last teachings of All Might to Midoriya.

Do you mean this? :heh
A bit of speculation around the characters' love life is inevitable. I ship Midoriya x Tsuyu. :lmao

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

I don't understand what fast pace you people are talking. The series is going is a pretty good and calm pace.
Let's see what happened until now:
.Introduction to our main character and the story in general -> 1 chapter
.Training and entering the academy -> 3 chapters
.1st Heroic Lesson -> 3 chapters
.2nd Heroic Lesson -> 4 chapters
.3rd Her .... Enemy Invasion -> 10 chapters
.Sport Festival -> 3 for now

Note that the end game of the story is: Main Character becoming the #1 hero in the world!
Also note that the Enemy Invasion is just the beginning of a Earth-Shaking event to come!
Also note that the Festival has already 3 chapters and is just in the beginning of the qualification phase!

In conclusion I would say that the author spent some time showing some lessons instead of going right to the meat of things. If it was naruto he would only show the last lesson, the one that ended in invasion.
You probably are taking this as fast pace because the "arcs" that occurred until now are small ones, while some other series jump directly to a big arc. Don't be alarmed because the Sport Festival will be the first big arc of the series.

Now people saying that it will take 15 to 20 chapters are super Naive. The Sport Festival already took 3 chapters and they are in the qualification phase only, there is still a final phase waiting for us. If you add the abnormalities that will certainly occur during the festival, like a villain attack, we will end up with a super big arc.
The author can also decide to show the students of other years!

Certainly a combination of both, you can't have only strength to be a hero. Don't think that the pace is fast to be honest, I doubt there are many readers who believe that ALl Might will stay alive till the end, he nearly died against Venomous Chainsaw and now his powers are disappearing since he passed the torch, as of now Izuku is learning to master his Quirk and we are learning more about his classmates as well, the class just started :oh.

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

The pace is fast when it comes to All Might. Obviously, we knew that he wouln't last forever since the beginning, but we also didn't expect that he would have one foot in the grave with 23 chapters. XD
However, as I said, I don't consider this a bad thing.

Regarding the rest of the story, it is going with a nice pace, indeed.

Well, one way or another, his power is very similar to All Might's power. Noumu had different quirks and it is this villains mastermind's doing. So I kind of expect that in the future we'll see more heroes and villains with different powers.

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

Chapter 24
If you haven't read yet, don't read the post by now.

The Sports Festivel started with some funny scenes. :lmao
Yuuei teachers put Class A in pedestal and let the other in the corner, they didn't like it, obviously. Some heroes felt the pressure, but the best ones dealt with it very well. Following this we had Bakugou speech as representant, you guys can imagine what he said, he pissed off the other classes, but we can see that he changed like Midoriya said, he is very focused on his goal and he was reaffirming it to himself. Right after, the competition started with a hurdle race. Todoriki is giving a hard to everybody, it is clear that his combination of Ice and Fire is perfect for this kind of competition. I don't know how Bakugou didn't start exploding everything since the beginning, he really changed. XD
And, who changed as well was Midoriya... His expression is completely different, he is not a wimp anymore, but a fine hero in development! Looking forward to reading the next chapter.

PS: Everybody emphasized it many times in this chapter as though the author was saying it: everything happen very fast in Yuuei. I think 20 chapters in this arc is more than enough. :derp
