Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

With a world like this ruled by blood, I think Villains can get a more interesting input than I initially thought.

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

Never thought todoroki would go evil. If anyone becomes evil it'll be bakugo IMO.

I wonder if endeavor is somehow related to the villain alliance. I always felt it was someone close to all might that betrayed him (since the villains seemed to have vague knowledge about his weakened state) and initially I thought it might have been a traitor from yuhei staff but with all the recent info about endeavor, its doesn't seem impossible for him to be connected somehow. A bit unlikely though but he seems like a particularly dangerous person. I wonder if he solves his cases using extreme methods.
I would think not. He's not focused on beating All Might, he put that on his kid for him. I think once he learns that All Might is weak, maybe he'll try to finish him off?

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

I have wanted to say this for a while, this manga is actually a lot darker than it lets on. So far it has not actually said it however the implication of many of the things that are said so far seem to suggest this world where almost 80% of the population has quirks is unbelievably harsh. Going from the early chapters and the explanation of how heroes work the first disturbing bit is that heroes work for the country they are in. In that regard heroes are a commodity to be acquired by the government... And by all intents and purposes they are soldiers on a payroll. Villains hinted at certain oppression in the world as their reason to fight. I am not saying they are good guys or anything of the sort but it seems there is something motivating them which might be a bit of a grey area. Assuming they are opposing some form of actual opression it makes sense they would aim for the symbol of peace who ironically would be the main force behind the oppression in question. How the 20% of the quirkless population makes a living is a mystery to me... It seems like it would be the segment of the population most likely to get the short end of the stick. And finally this quirk marriage... Basically eugenics at work. And seeing todoroki, successful eugenics. Its disturbing and I get the impression we will be seeing more of this in the future. Its a well known phenomenon apparently so todoroki is likely not the last case we will see.

I said that it would become darker, the seeds were all there.

Well I would say he does want to beat all might but can't. Isn't it because he couldn't accomplish it himself that he decided to use genetics to produce a son who can? He seems like a pretty bitter person though. He was content to wait for a son to grow and become powerful enough to surpass all might. So he's been holding this for about 16+ years and doesn't mind waiting longer since todoroki would still need to some time to reach pro hero level not to talk of the top guns (endeavor himself and all might).

The manga does have dark undertones. Even from the beginning, we had kids using their powers to bully and oppress those without quirks.

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

The world of HeroAca is dark but at the same time it isn't. That Eraserhead and No. 13 survived the fight against the villain alliance without any heavy damage is unrealistic, especially No. 13 who was being sucked in from his own black hole. To let both of them be back so early and be so carefree during the sports festival (No. 13 was sitting besides All Might and ordering snacks while Eraserhead is a commentator) takes the heavy and dark side of the world away.
I don't demand to see dead students/teachers/civillians every time the VA attacks, but a person who was supposed to have lost his whole back or has his head crushed several times into the ground by a creature as strong as All Might shouldn't be back again after 2 chapters like nothing happened, with the excuse that there is a quirk that strengthens the healing ability.

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

Noomu survived, same with black mist and tomura. I believe majority of the villains survived as well (I don't think any died though).

Personally, I believe its a bit too early for death and sometimes, its not only death that makes a story dark.

I don't think the healing thing is a stretch either. This is a world where the supernatural is normal. The nurse has healed Midoriya on several occasions after he used one for all and we know that it breaks his bones and severely injures him. So for her to heal aizawa and co isn't far fetched to me, aizawa also isn't fully healed if I'm not mistaken.

Well its not like Aizawa didn't suffer severe injuries. His eye sockets were crushed to powder. It was said that the school uses extreme measures, thats why the healing lady exists, so that they can perform these extreme conditions without major injuries

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

The healing ladies quirk only fastens the regenartion abilities that every human has, but can these abilities let the whole back of a person regenerate? No. 13s back was sucked in by his black hole and while it wasn't shown how much damage he suffered, if a person's back gets sucked in by a black hole you can expect some kind of damage that isn't possible to be treated. The human regeneration abilities don't let a cut off body part like arms or legs grow back by just waiting for some time, the whole back beeing "gone" ain't different from this.
I also don't think that having Eraserheads head crushed with such force only leads to an irreparabel damage to his eye sockets, his brain must have sustained unimaginable damage and let him stay forever in a state like Kaminari when he used to much electricity.

But lets forget it, I wouldn't want a Kaminari like idiot Eraserhead or the death of a teacher like No. 13.
And the dark part of HeroAca will get even darker according to what Deku said in chapter 20.

Hold your horses guys, if we had to discuss here the lack of logic in the genre (it is not exclusive of BnHA), the discussion would be endless. :fan
I forgot the details and I'm lazy to look for it, but I'm fine with it, it is not so serious and most of the people don't notice those details anyway. Also, a death so in the beginning would let the manga darker than it should IMO.

You should know that logic never works in shonen lol.

And that logic also doesn't make a story darker or more naive, only more structural.

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

"Quirk marriages", I was so damn right about the possible quirk rasicm/thinking of quirks in upper class and lower class categories! What else would humanity do with superpowers but to use them to tell each other apart from who is a hot spot and who's a loser in society?

Poor Todoroki, he's BokuHero's Zuko just even more cruel with the father using him and the mother hating his fire side, even pouring boling water over it...
I bet in the first popularity poll Todoroki will place very high. Right now, I find Kacchan and Todoroki more interesting than Deku, not as in characters or powerwise but simply from the background story and motivation to become nr1.

Now we got a 1-1 tournament (with a single B guy, poor chubby dude, he doesn't look very confident in winning a single match^^;) with 16 people. Who are your favorites match-ups? Personally I hope for Momo vs Mineta so that Mineta is all shaking in his boots while furious Momo gets her revenge for being used twice by the pervy boy. XDDD
That and Kacchan vs Todoroki to see who of them would win in a 1-1 and if Todoroki is forced to use his fire side again or not.
Oh and the monkey boy vs invisible girl, I want him to fight a stark naked sexy girl and be all like "where the hell am I supposed to hit and not accidently touch boobies and look like a pervert?". XDDD

So Todoroki's backstory comes into focus. It isn't exactly surprising, considering his animosity towards his father and the hereditary nature of quirks. Although his mother's reaction was somewhat unexpected. This tournament setup is pretty much the worst outcome for Midoriya. With the limits in usage of his quirk, he's going to have to fight quite a bit relying on his own physical ability and smarts. I expect quite a lot from these matches.

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

So... midoriya will have to willpower his way to awesomeness from this point onward? To me he is too much like captain america in a way. Weak guy with no inherent merit one way or the other other than having a big heart who gets full of steroids into awesomeness. Midoriya actually makes a significantly less interesting main character than todoroki in many ways. His motivation is weaker, his determination is weaker.. His quirk is without a doubt the strongest although that does not make midoriya a better main character. If anything its kinda the opposite, having an inherently stronger quirk is kind of a bad point for a main character. Midoriya does not need to actually master his quirk in the traditional sense as in figuring it out and learning new uses for it. He simply needs to be able to use it at all. I mean, his quirk hurts him because he immediately uses all of its power and he can't handle it. Its not like with other kids who need to develop their quirks to that level. There has to be some other limiting factor to midoriya's quirk for it to be interesting... It'd be interesting if his quirk all for one allows him to add up the physical power of everyone he can call his friend and once all might looses all of his power midoriya will too and will have to make his own friends from this point onward.

I love the face of Tetsu x4 when he sees the girls of class A in the outfits. He must be thinking something like:"How the hell did i loose against them?"

For the match setup: I hope Dekus first fight is against Iida. It is about time to settle the dispute between the two because of Iidas war declaration.

For the others i think Momo vs. mindcontrol guy; fat kid from class b vs. iron body; kaminari vs. tokoyami; navel laser vs. todoroki; bakugou vs. tail guy; uraraka vs. snail girl and for the last tape guy vs. gadget girl.

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

Pretty nice chapter. Todoroki is quite a character. He just has everything that makes you invested in a manga character. He takes the spotlight for me pretty much everytime. Backstory, strength, attitude etc. Pretty well done.

As for his mum, that's pretty nasty. Why do that to your own son regardless of the circumstances? Bakugo also gets some of my attention. He has come quite some way from the bullying arrogant kid who taught the world revolved around him we were introduced to. Now he's dealing with being second fiddle, it'll do some good for his character development and I'm more interested in him now.

Midoriya is still coming to terms with a lot of things. The Power he can't control, rivalries, getting so much attention from others. He like bakugo has also come quite some way.
Its pretty nice how the story carries these 3 along, slowly shaping them into better characters.

Well, we're moving on to the tournament. Certainly Midoriya will face his biggest challenge here. Like the quirk test, he is at a disadvantage. It'll be pretty interesting to see how he copes and advances in the tournament.

All Might and Endeavor didn't talk for 10 years, holy f*. I expected rivalry among the heros, but Endeavor seems to literally hate All Might. This chapter revealed some interesting information. Todoroki is easily my favorite character now. The complete package of him as a character is awesome. He has everything you want from a character, main or not is irrelevant at this point. I feel sorry for him... the father a dick, the mother is not better.

Really good chapter. The one on one matches will be great!

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

I should say that what Todoroki mother did with him was quite original since we always expect the the mother will be that who will be in her son's side no matter what happens and the person who will be of inspiration to the son overcomes the difficulties. Todoroki talked about his mother late in the chapter and when he was telling his story, I really thought that his mother would be this I just described, the way it developed was quite surprising for me.
However, although Todoroki doesn't like his mother for everything she did with him, I think that he understand how she became like that. She was forced to marry with Endeavor and probably was raped (if she was forced to marry, even more to... you know...) by him to give birth his son, so she didn't pass through something light, I wouldn't be surprised if someone got crazy with such suffering.
What makes me think that he understands his mother's side is the fact he didn't deny his mother power, only Endeavor power, which means that he understands that everything is Endeavor's fault and his thirst for power. Really, Endeavor is the worst villain I've seen in this series so far and he is a hero...

Re: Boku no Hero Academia by Horikoshi Kouhei

Todoroki wants to be N.1 and don't use his left side for it, it's good but it shows that he has too much pride. Is he looking down so much on the others that he thinks half of his power would do or is he just that confident?

I wonder if Bakugou will falter now that he knows Todoroki's backstory, that's the only thing that could make him lose against someone weaker than him, I don't see Todoroki beating him with half of his power TBH but ice can be very useful on him since he needs to sweat to have powerful explosions.

Some on the last page really don't look happy at all. Navel Lazer boy will probably redeem himself in this tournament :XD.
