"Hardcore game lobby" is not a thing that exists, settle down.:eyeroll

The history of Final Fantasy is huge. No question. It's been the biggest dog in the RPG landscape for many many years. But Final Fantasy XIII was a huge disappointment and they are taking a bold new course with this game. Is it going to work out? I don't know. Nobody does.

Persona has been skyrocketing in popularity since Golden came out, that's a fact. That 6 million number is incredible because 90% of it is probably 2 games. Persona 3 and Persona 4. Which don't forget were both PS2 games, until the Vita came along. It's a tiny franchise compared to Final Fantasy. And yet it's winning polls with 35k votes. That is a strong statistical sample size, that's insane!

And if you look carefully at that poll you sited about people in Japan. Look at the entries under Final Fantasy XV and Persona 5 that shows where they were at just two weeks ago. Do you know what it it says? It says Persona 5 was beating Final Fantasy XV! In Japan!

---------------------------

My point is that any match up between Final Fantasy XV and Persona 5 would be a lot closer than you realize.

Don't quite follow the eye-roll. Hardcore lobby makes for an insignificant part of the percentage in gaming. No clue how you would assume otherwise.

According to whom? This is anecdotal evidence when the sales prove otherwise. It sold about 7 million copies, so, who was disappointed? No game makes everyone happy. There will always be people left disappointed.

They seem lackluster numbers for the entire series.

Persona won't do that well. I will bring this up when the game hits the stores. You are overly optimistic about Persona.

I'm rolling my eyes because your making something up to represent what you disagree with. There is no hardcore game lobby. There is no organization out there pursuing some agenda. There are just a lot of independent gamers with their own thoughts, opinions, and feelings on games. You talk about insignificant percentages and minorities but you don't know how many people believe what anymore than I do. Your just slapping labels on the side of the argument you don't agree with.

The only numbers we've got on that are polls that people have done. Those are the tangibles. And all those polls show the same thing. Persona 5 is gaining on Final Fantasy XIII. You may not want to believe it but the numbers show it to be the truth.

----------------------------------

I'm not worried about Persona 5. I'm not really worried about Final Fantasy XV either sales wise. Realistically, I think both will sell well as long as they're good games.

But you should prepare to be shocked about how well Persona 5 is going to do.

It is also a fact that casual gamers are killing the market with their rampant stupidity in regards to wanting everything watered-down. Alas, developers listen to them more. Why? Because they are the main cash cows.

Gradations in gaming culture exist. There is plenty of research available on this front as well, especially cognitive psychology. Perron's books would be a good start for you. Jesus, man. What, have you been sleeping all this time? Your lack of information on this front isn't my fault. Next time, confirm it by hitting google. It would save you needless use of smileys as this is not only accepted Jargon for gamers, but developers develop games looking at demographics as well. Which is why so many AAA games are extremely easy these days with friendly UIs, uninspired level designs, few set-pieces and serviceable gameplay. In fact, AI is not even the goal of the developers, but to reach to as many people as possible. Those many people are "casual" gamers; gaming isn't their "core" hobby.

Hardcore gamer lobby IS small. It's a fact set in stone, which is why most games are user-friendly these days; geared at casual crowds. And why games with good difficult curves, such as Alien Isolation and Evil Within don't sell that well. Why? They are aimed at a crowd that is different from the casual market. It's pretty much an accepted mindset in the industry. Trend in gaming also makes up for a lot of sales and shooters are "in vogue" these days. Organization? Dude, what are you even going on about? Also, you are the one who pulled "they ARE hardcore gamers" out of thin-air without any proof whatsoever, when it's an accepted fact in the industry that developers are making most games aimed at the "casual market". Every good research article would tell you that. So, "feelings" or whatever sentimentality you are going for ... isn't relevant to this topic. Let's not go there.

The polls mean little. As I said, you think ALL people use polls? These are mostly used by the lobby that are very much invested in gaming, when consoles are NOT bought OR sold to them. Shocker, isn't it? Why else do you think consoles have turned into mini computers that can play music, movies and allow the user the internet service? I suggest you watch some of the company conferences and how sales pitch factors in. And would tell you that these consoles and games ... ? They are aimed at an average man, NOT the dedicated gaming crowd. So ALL players for Persona or final fantasy or any other franchise known to man in gaming, being hardcore is an absurd assumption.

Persona is gaining momentum, so, I won't be all that shocked if it sells well. But out selling FF XV? Probably by a grace of miracle. And even then I am being generous.

Older FF titles (8 and 9) were absolutely silly in regards to plot. Interesting characters is a subjective argument, to be honest. But were they well written? Nah.

It lacked plot? Now how do I put this without sounding offensive ... but it looks as if you are mistaking something else for a plot. Again, not trying to sound offensive but it absolutely did have a plot and the rest you mentioned.
I think we just have very different tastes, FFIX has an amazing complicated plot and character development! I love it so much! At least in my opinion VIII and IX had more interesting plots, and I found them to be a lot more enjoyable than XII.

But I think people's opinions towards the Final Fantasy franchise is often determined by which games they play first and when they're introduced to the series. And normally people think the first Final Fantasy they play is going to be best one and compare all others to that one.

So the newer generation play FFXIII as their first game and love it. I do think Lightning is an amazing female character because she's so bad ass (and there's really no other character like her in the FF series), but that doesn't make up for the fact that FFXIII just doesn't feel like a FF game to me. The storyline was all over the place and the characters reasoning for doing things didn't make sense. I had to force myself to finish it and then look up the plot online I was so confused, but that just made me more confused. But as I said, when a FF is someone's first game they probably think it's amazing and will hold it above all the others.

I think you're confusing the term "Lobby" with "Demographic".

A "lobby" is a group of people seeking to influence politicians or public officials on a particular issue.

A "demographic" a particular sector of a population.

Hardcore gamers exist and usually defined by anyone who average a certain number of hours of games per week. Which is why gaming surveys always ask that question. Not exactly sure what the number of hours is but if your following Final Fantasy odds are you fall into the hardcore group.

A hardcore gamer lobby does not exist. The word "Lobby" suggests both organization and agenda which isn't there. The demographic does exist and that group makes up the majority of console game sales because those are the people that buy the big $60 games and pay for the hardware to play them on, people like you and me. Causal gamers are like the mobile game crowd or people that buy a console strictly for Call of Duty and Madden.

I don't think their is anything wrong with that either. The more people playing games of any kind the better for gamers everywhere. They usually just aren't the kind of people that buy JRPGs. Or action RPGs for that matter.

Not really interested in the Platinum Demo but I have to give Square-Enix some credit. That seems like a really cool idea. The kind of half-demo half-prologue approach has got to be pretty awesome for people who are anticipating Final Fantasy XV that's gotta be a pretty neat thing.

The anime series kinda turns me off. Mainly because seeing that an anime version of Noctis looks basically identical to Sasuke is not doing the character any favors with me. But for people who are into that kind of thing maybe that will be cool too.

Holy crap, I guess now we know why that are pulling out all the stops. Apparently somebody asked Tabata how much Final Fantasy XV has to sell over it's entire lifespan to succeed and surprisingly he answered saying 10 million copies!

That is a truly insane number.

To put it in perspective Final Fantasy VII is the only game in the history of Final Fantasy to sell that many. And that's on multiple platforms and taking into account almost 20 years of rereleases and the greatest hits version that was $15. Also twice as much as the Witcher 3 and twice as much as Metal Gear Soild: The Phantom Pain. And more than twice what Kingdom Hearts sold.

I think they are doing all the right things with this big marketing push but is there any way they can hit that number? :s

A demographic is simply a "sector" of a particular population; an adjective that needs to be put before a noun to generate contextual relevance. That is all. Add it to the context of the noun "gamer" (a sector of population that plays games) and you have established that as your demographic. For instance, adult women being the largest demographic in gaming, or young adult gamers as target demographics for certain campaigns etc. Lobby is a completely different concept. Let's drop this, as I have no clue why you are beginning to argue on sense of words and all that when such gamer divisions exist and are very much real as I elaborated through the links. This is my final reply on this part of your post.

I think we just have very different tastes, FFIX has an amazing complicated plot and character development! I love it so much! At least in my opinion VIII and IX had more interesting plots, and I found them to be a lot more enjoyable than XII.

All what you have described is plot nonetheless. A plot doesn't have to be good or bad or subjective for it to be considered a plot. That is what I was trying to say.

KINGSGLAIVE: FINAL FANTASY XV Trailer Leaked
Website: http://www.kingsglaivefinalfantasyxv-movie.com/site/

Press Release:

SONY PICTURES HOME ENTERTAINMENT AND SQUARE ENIX ANNOUNCE FEATURE FILM KINGSGLAIVE: FINAL FANTASY XV
Revolutionary fully CG animated movie features voices of Aaron Paul, Sean Bean and Lena Headey

LOS ANGELES (Mar. 30, 2016) – Based on the global cinematic and game phenomenon, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) and SQUARE ENIX® tonight unveiled KINGSGLAIVE: FINAL FANTASY XV™, the fully CG animated movie slated to premiere this fall. The highly anticipated movie will be released worldwide as a cross-media collaboration with FINAL FANTASY XV, the upcoming sequel to the extremely successful gaming franchise.

KINGSGLAIVE features an all-star cast, including Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones) as King Regis, Lena Headey (300, Game of Thrones) as Princess Luna and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) as Kingsglaive soldier Nyx.
Synopsis:

The magical kingdom of Lucis is home to the hallowed Crystal, but the menacing empire of Niflheim will stop at nothing to make it theirs. War has raged between the two for as long as most can remember.

King Regis of Lucis commands an elite force of soldiers dubbed the Kingsglaive. Wielding their king’s magic, Nyx Ulric and his fellow glaives stand before the crown city of Insomnia, fighting to stay the inexorable advance of Niflheim’s imperial army.

Before the overwhelming military might of the empire, King Regis can only salvage his kingdom by accepting anultimatum—he must cede all lands outside the crown city, and see his son, Prince Noctis, wed to Lady Lunafreya, the former princess of Tenebrae now captive of Niflheim.

As the war of wills rages, the machinations of Niflheim transform Insomnia into an awe-inspiring battleground, pulling Nyx into a struggle for the very survival of the kingdom.
Wow, Nyx is your McGruff, 5 o' clock shadow wearing Assassin's Creed reject. If this is the route they take with future FF games, then I am done with them. If I want Western RPGs, I'll play them in its stead. The Westernization of everything is just plain appalling. Pathetic. At least Luna looks decent. FF Females are cringe-worthy and bad ... always.

Anyhow, the rumors were true. This is the cut content from Nomura's Versus. This is a prequel from the looks of it that sets the stage for the events in the main game.

Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata said that the flying car, which appeared at the end of the trailer, will be controllable, but only near the end of the game and if the player fulfilled certain requirements.

Woohoo, got my hands on FFXIII. At long last lol.... Gotta say, I am disappointed in the game. I am 4 chapters in and the plot is a confusing mess. What the hell is up with the terminology? And the characters are just bad so far. Lightning seems like a version of compilation cloud (which is a tad different from what I originally pictured him as) where the angst was replaced by constant anger. Snow seems to be the game's barely functional idiot. If the game gives me an option to kill him I am definitely taking it. Sahz seems to have no discernible plot purpose other than having a bird living in his afro and be wacky. Hope has a girl's name... I guess that is not the case in Japanese. His plot purpose so far seems to be being annoying and having his expression always show the exact moment at which vanille gives him an awkward boner. And fucking vanille. VANILLE. Who the fuck came up with that? If I had a chance to name characters I would have called her jailbait....

Is there going to be a PC release of FFXV?

Yeah, not a great game.

And I would have to think there will be a PC release. Don't think anything has been announced by in the last few years SquareEnix has been putting most things they can on PC.

According to this article, Tabata said that he's positive that there will be a PC version of the game.

Oh, some more FFVII remake info are up.

Well, that is good news.. the question is when then.

As for the FFVII thing, they are clearly just assholes. I get changing somethings but making the game into god knows how many parts is just ridiculous... It''s worst than them young adult novels into more movies than there are books.

I'm starting to get numb to it. They don't make games for fans like us anymore and I guess that's fine. Lots more fish in the sea, RPG wise.

The only thing that bugs me is the comment is when they seem to suggest that creative team they have now is the same that created Final Fantasy VII originally because that's not really the whole truth. Nomura, Nojima, and Kitase were definitely involved but so were Sakaguchi (Creator of Final Fantasy) and Kato (Writer of Chrono Trigger, Xenogears) neither of which have worked for Square in a long time. The whole life stream idea was Sakaguchi's for example so was Aeris' iconic moment.

I mean, it's not like they have to make a game for the fans but seeing this it kinda seems like they don't care about making a game their customers will enjoy. At least it is not immediately evident. It's like they changed their ten year business plan to milking one game. And using a version of cloud which I am sure no one likes. At this point it seems like every time cloud appears in a game he regresses as a character...

It's definitely not the way I want the series to go either but the more info about the various Final Fantasy projects that comes out the more it seems like they are very much courting a different fanbase than one we and the rest of the older school Final Fantasy fans are a part of.

I'm kind of braced for the version of Cloud in the Remake to be like the one in Advent Children. A version that's super emo instead of the more brash and arrogant version. Nomura directed Advent Children and he's supposedly directing the Remake. So it's his vision for the character we're likely to get.

Personally, I think this is a mistake. Just like I think action combat is a mistake and splitting it into parts is a mistake. But maybe they're right, maybe this will make more money for them. Clearly they are very confident in this course for whatever reason.

A good indicator will probably be how well Final Fantasy XV does. It kind of represents this new direction. If that sells as well as they hope it's going to, in the 10 mil range, then they will have definitely been right(at least from a business angle). If it doesn't make it past 7 million then they probably did make a mistake with this approach to the remake.

At least Cloud in AC showed some emotional depth. He was just a cookie-cutter trope personified as a typical "I don't give a fuck" anime cliche walking in FFVII. I would never understand people's hate for AC, when VII's Cloud is ... is he even human?

The plot is pretty simple. You are only at 4th Chapter. Let it drag out a bit.

No plans so far for PC version. But Tabata mentioned in the latest event that they were aware of the demands. So, I think that is confirmation enough that it will happen somewhere down the road.

Because he is a drag to watch... He was the cliche you mentioned but that is because of the damage his personality suffered due to the plot. After he gets past that he turns into an actual human being who cares for his friends. And by the time of the compilation he is a whinny idiot who does his best to alienate his friends (and fans). He is basically an emo at that stage....

The plot has been dragging since chapter one... I see no sign of improvement. Well, I have warmed up a bit to lightning but only barely, kinda rooting for her to have some other emotion other than unyielding rage at unclear plot elements (and my dislike for the other characters has increased significantly more than what I have warmed up to lightning). She is still a vastly superior character than compilation cloud with her one emotion though. The terminology is only getting worst, at this point it seems like they are just throwing darts at syllables in a wall and filling blanks left in the script with whatever comes up. Any sentence in the game where there are more than two made up words sounds like straight up gibberish....

I mean, look at this damn thing:
Lightning: No. That's for damn sure. It started with Serah. The fal'Cie took her. Now I'm a l'Cie. And the Sanctum's hunting me, an enemy of the state. But who's pulling their strings? A fal'Cie. Eden. Cocoon's sustainer and guiding light. It probably ordered the Purge, too. Pulse and Sanctum fal'Cie? They're all the same. And we're all the same to them: expendable. I'm not dying a fal'Cie slave.
And it is far from the worst....
