This could happen. At worst they'd have minor injuries from their battles. Jellal especially is going to be important against Zeref, that's my gut feeling. Gray at the very least should fight Invel, he usually gets the ice wizard.
Yes if they teams up with mavis(for exemple) i can see mavis and jellal vs zeref and gray vs invel(ice mage..like always..)

Wouldn't Jellal just have nuked Neinhart straight away if he didn't need to say the incantation? Plus he's said the incantation every time, so it should be mandatory tbh.
I checked both raws and anime and it says the same - three-dimensional magic square (rittai mahōjin). I didn't saw English subs, but rittai means also "solid body", that's why it was translated as "solid seal", I believe

That line doesn't sound like an incantation to me. I still think he does it for style. There was a long pause between that and the actual spell when he killed Neinhart. Even Sema, a stronger heavenly body magic, doesn't require such a line. Why should Grand Chariot need more requirement?

As for your theory, I'm affraid you have to ask Mashima. But I agree, even if Jellal didn't give them much time to think, at least Racer should be able escape. This square or circle wasn't related to Grand Chariot (magic circles are much lower than Grand Chariot stars) and Cobra asked "When did he (do it)?!" so I think, that Jellal stopping OS from escaping from his spell is quite possible.

Btw, Jellal used GC three times in the manga, but only OS saw those misterious pillars. Natsu was beaten at the time and Neinheart was eem... Neinheart. Anyway, everytime Jellal uses this spell it looks cooler than before
