Today in a comicbookstore there was a like 13 year old Boy Who Asked a staffel Member: Hey i just wanted to ask when the New hunter x hunter volume comet out? I caught up and it has been half a year since then. Is there a pause or something?

I felt for that poor kid. He will soon join the blues.

I thought it'd be easier to wait with a fixed date, but.....It really is not ^^

I really want those chapters right now.

Going to reread the chapters starting at the election arc the day before the new chap comes out.

Man, this waiting is going quite smoothly, if anything all these hiatuses throughout the years taught me on how to be a more patient person...

Just like Jari Maenpaa says:
"And one day it will reward you for the burden of wait."

Inconveniently the guy is also a big fan of hiatuses :derp

When you think about it (and it is not stockholm syndrome speaking here) it is kind of amazing to draw one manga for a very long phase of your life.

I mean, Togashi started HxH when he was 32 years old.
In the starting time of it, he met his wife and married her one year after HxH started.
But in essence, the starting phase of HxH is still written by someone who was a young man without a family.

Over time, he got kids, got older, changed outlooks on life (and seemingly for the better, judging from his interview at the end of YYH) and is still keeping on drawing that manga. He almost racket up 20 years now and he might aswell go 5 more or even more than that.

Of course, there are other series which are as long as that, like one piece or naruto (which has (kinda) ended, but still), but none of them could afford pauses as long as togashi, With the work overload which is known about oda, he does seems to (necessarily) lead a similar life to when he started drawing one piece, even tho he has a wife now.
I do not know about kishi, but in both cases, i did not really see a change in tone or a progression in the way the story is told as i saw it in HxH.

It is often mentioned that the different arcs of HxH could be different mangas alltogether, and this is true.

The same is true for Miura in my opinion. In both HxH and berserk, i think you can see a personal progression of the author.

With berserk, it feels like the absolute rage which was there in the beginning kept mellowing down. For so many characters. Most strikingly, Guts and Farnese were absolutely broken persons at some point, consumed by sadism and rage.
At least when Schierke was introduced and Ishidori, the characters kept getting calmer and found their place in the world.
Without the mainplot of impending doom, those two could lead fullfilling lifes at that point.

And i see the same in HxH at the point when Gon and Killuah seperated.
They both had their adventures (and they will probably have more), but they also progressed to the point in which they have archieved a lot of the things they set out to archieve.
The plots have gradually changed from 'getting stronger' to 'taking responsibility'.
Killuah has found selfworth and friends now and has grown to be able to protext his little sister (for now), and gon seems to have solved his father issues and (at least for now) being content with living with his aunt mito.
The same goes for the side characters we saw in the later arcs.
in the earlier arcs, the guys we were introduced to wer e(naturally for hunters) people who were hungry.
The spiders were greedy, all the people in greed island too, hisoka and most of the other guys too (the mafia, everyone in the hunter exam, and so on).

It is still a common theme in HxH that hunters are selfish, but we are still introduced to more characters who have already found their place and at least somewhat fullfill responsiblities.

Netero, as selfish as he was, wanted a last good fight but still offered his life for the win.
The king himself was very bound by duty and in the end prioritized finding his place in the world higher than getting more power, or destroying his enemies.
The royal guards were the opposite of selfish, either.
The Zodiak (with some exceptions) are at least feeling loyal to netero either.
Also, the newly introduced organization who wants to keep humanity out of the darc continent.

Instead of introducing us to almost exclusively characters who are led by greed and bring chaos and destruction for status or power like in the beginning of the manga, we are introduced to a good chunk of characters who want to keep the status quo and rather (from their point of view, in the ant's case) act like keeprs of peace and order.

I think that difference in the characters intentions is a thing that happened because togashi himself got older and has other intentions than a young man might have.

Isn't it only natural a character would change over the course of a story?

I don't think there's a point to analyzing the author if you can't find matches between things going on in his personal life and happenings in the manga. None of your examples indicate something out of the ordinary. The various character progressions follow the pacing of the plot, this happens in other (mainstream) manga as well. Their changing behavior doesn't necessarily point to Togashi getting older being a factor, imo.

Which shonen would there be which do that?

Aside from that, you are right in that it is rather hard to attribute things happening in literature to personal life.

It can be very interesting to try tho (for example, the works of kafka come to mind. What figures can be attributed to his father can only be speculated (or in rare cases proven by his statements in his diaries), but his personal life still does play a role in understanding some of his works better).

As i said, personally, i see those progressions in HxH and some other works and i think they can be attributed to the author maturing.

The same goes for authors like stephen king whose later works have a hell of a different tone to when he was younger (admittedly, there can be observed a break after his life threatening accident).

I do think that the chapters of the chimera ant arc would have been very different if togashi had written them as a younger man. But as i said, naturally this cannot be proven.

I also do not know works which have character developement and tone and structure changes like that which are written in a short time (like over the course of 5 years).
If you'd know any, feel free to give me some, i am deprived of good mangas to read.

I mostly agree with you but character development isn't always well handled and static characters do exist. I don't think Togashi's development of the characters is due to him getting older and maturing though, he has always been like that, in YYH the development of the four MCs was great, he liked to develop his villains too and said it in an interview even. YYH was a more conventional battle shounen but it's mainly because the system is far less complex and the world building made it more limited IMO(I do not think that HxH is not mainstream BTW).

If I compare Nakaba's Kongou Banchou to Nanatsu no Taizai for example I can say that he got much better overall and it's not necessarily because he got older, it might be because he likes the theme better, he has more inspiration etc but Togashi's style didn't change IMO, he said in one interview that he will continue to do crazy things in his manga and it has not changed, it's rather his art which changes sometimes, and since he gets inspiration from a lot of things.

So......Dragging this thread back, since we are going to need it in a few hours.
New Hiatus is announced, so, no more chapters for now.
Fingers crossed for this hiatus to be a short one.

I almost don't want to post this, but it feels relevant after what Togashi has been writing into the author comments section. We thought he was improving, but the comments are really sort of alarming in nature (things like not being able to even crawl to get to a phone for a hospital). Anyway, here's a hiatus chart, demonstrating the number of times he's been on hiatus, their length and the number of issues he's been published in to the number he's missed: https://hiatus-hiatus.rhcloud.com/

On another note: My head knew it was coming. My heart wanted to go bitch smack my head and tell it to chop itself off. It is *torture* to have that big mass of enemies and allies, cornered into the same space for so long with one another, dangled in front of us... only to have to wait to see how it will play out.

I am sending some very real prayers Togashi's way. It is all the help I can give him without knowing what else to do.

But wasnt he talking, not long time ago, about running a marathon?
As i said, maybe he is just reasonable with his body and, this time, does not go for more than ten chapters so that he can handle his back problem better.

I don't think it will be a long break. He will be featured in Jump Ryu in November so there should be news about him before that.

It's hard to know, especially since the last author comment had him saying something to the effect of "My body was capable of writing in the prone position 20 years ago."

Couldn't he be taking a break to refine the art for the new volume since this is the last chapter included in it? The Kurapika scenes in chapter 358 for example had completely blank backgrounds along with few other parts in other chapters that need fixing.

Togashi came back just to put a new volume into stores. That's how to get the money and go on hiatus again, right?
We will have fun with the boat trip for the next ten years.
