BC still sold less than Gintama with an extra volume released and hefty backlog sales, so not really. BC seems to be incredobly front loaded sales wise which makes things confusing,

All I have to say about BC is how underwhelming its sales actually are every time I look. Sure it made top 30 and thats great, but only 200k in 6 months? Youd think it would do better given all the attention it gets. The fact that Neverlands 2nd volume sold more in 3+ months less time pretty much says it all.
I don't see it as underwhelming at all considering all the amount of hate it initially got so it had a very slow fan base growth that has finally reached where it probably could've been, had it not received the unwarranted rejection at it's start, to where as TPN didn't get push back from readers to actually pick it up and read so it's no wonder it actually sells better then BC even though it's younger in it's serialization.

Wasnt aware of BC having an extra volume so it isnt that bad. Same, I was kinda shocked to see BC in the series list but looking at the volume list it was at/near the bottom. I said this earlier but even with the anime push, I predict BC doing around mid-high 300k's per volume. Not sure if the "hate train" is as strong in Japan as it is here.

No it is pretty underwhelming. It already had it's OVA and struggling to get to the 200k mark. I expected BC to do better after it's OVA and maybe that's my fault (not certain if OVA's have a noticeable impact on sales)

Black Clover only got visible negative reception in the west. Japan doesn't particularly care if a series is generic and even prefer "王道(Oudou)" series like Black Clover as they're simple, hot-blooded and serve as quick entertainment. Its literally considered almost as an add-on to Heroaca in that its a supposed future "flagship" series. Its pretty much air over there. I see it from time-to-time on twitter when some people talk about their thoughts on the latest issue every Monday. The fact is despite all this promotion its still pretty much unknown. You can say that all this promotion is the reason it's able to even sell as much.

OVA's don't usually have an impact on sales mainly because they come bundled with the volumes so unless you currently reading and are buying the volumes you'd most likely never watch the OVA unless you watch anime online.

By that logic MHA at it's start should attribute it's major success to the promotions it got pre-anime as well as before BC even started, no? I find it hard to accurately judge a series based on it's sales numbers anyway same with rankings in all honesty, though with rankings has a bit of leeway, since most shounen are aimed towards people with little pocket money to begin with so sales to me don't accurately represent enjoyment.

Yeah hero academia got a ton of promotion with all the color pages and covers it got, but it actually has the sales and world wide fame to back it up. Black Clover on the other hand is infamous for its all around subpar quality save for its art (which has faults of its own). People like to compare the two because of the similar amount of editorial pushing they get (or just to shitpost) but the fact is that hero academia is just out of black clovers league.

I won't deny that the initial promotion didn't help Heroaca however promotion is in the end exposure for the series. Its showing people that this series exists. Granted Black Clover has had most of its promotion within the magazine itself, in the form of color pages and covers and not much outside of that, the magazine still has a print of over 1.9 million copies each week and a good 70% of that is sold each week. Color pages stand out in the magazine so most people have at least seen Black Clover. Despite this, at this point, they don't feel the need to buy the volumes individually. Also, while sales surely don't represent enjoyment, they're the only way to know how a series is being received besides a few people's thoughts.

it's always bc fans that starts this endless cycle

people were talking about bc sales a topic that was started by a bc fan who demanded that people talk about fist half of year sales and when people talked about it their response was "b-b-but what about heroaca?"

I have a theory about it

bc chapters are pretty straight forward and action heavy, very little dialogue and not a lot of characters' moments

which leaves the fandom with nothing to talk about each week (look at all the dead threads on /a/ and the dead subreddit for proof)

with a proper discussion topic out of the question, shitposting rises

it happens even here in this very thread, here is an experiment
when you think of bc fans in this thread who are the first 3 people you think of?
now when you think of this thread trolls who are the first 3 people you think of?
same people, right? case in point

I think what speaks the loudest about the state Black Clover is that the only thread on /a/ to get over 100 replies was the one about the hot springs chapter. Really makes you think.

Coulda sworn it would be a girl. Guess we all fell for the trap.
The color spread though... the side-mouth is strong with this one.

9 is the girliest boy ever. And what's with the guy with the glasses? Don't most soccer players who need glasses wear contact lenses during games?

It seems this is Shuudan plot:

Black-haired MC has a crush on ponytail girl. Finds out she's in the soccer team and think she's probably a manager. He joins the team and gets accepted. Then he learns that ponytail girl is actually a guy and is one of their best players

It's just good to see that TPN already surpassed BC in sales (volume sales; not series sales). Soon KnY will surpass BC. :teehee

BC only scored one position in the "top-selling-manga-in-japan-by-volume" ranking, and that position is the last one, number 100. Even The Promised Neverland surpassed it with it's second volume and position number 93. Source

And it's position in the "top-selling-manga-in-japan-by-series" ranking is nothing special either.
Shokugeki no Soma also placed in the top 30 without an anime in the first half of 2014, position 20, and 1,394,312 volumes sold. Source
Boku no Hero Academia placed 10th in the first half of 2016 with 2,135,591 volumes sold. Source
Granted that this ranking went from November 23, 2015 to May 22, 2016 and that it's anime aired eight episodes from April 3, 2016 to May 22, 2016, but i'll take a wild guess and say that even without these 8 episodes from the anime it would have made it into the top 30.

If anything these rankings only show a huge decline in physical volumes sold from last year to this year. The places 19 to 30 from this year wouldn't have made it into the top 30 last year, Haikyu and Terra Formars went down 1 million sold volumes each from last year, Nanatsu no Taizai went down almost 1 million sold volumes (probably due to Nakaba's health problems and hiatus), Gintama lost almost 50%, Prison School didn't even make it into the top 30 this year which means it sold less than 50% compared to last year.
BC still sold less than Gintama with an extra volume released and hefty backlog sales, so not really. BC seems to be incredobly front loaded sales wise which makes things confusing,

There's no point on comparing Neverland and BC... Neverland is miles better. Or even MHA that is beyond both. The thing is, people is unable to accept things. If it was KNY or Neverland you guys would be celebrating instead of hating. Why? Because you simply hate the series. I did not see a single argument that can backs up it made to the list without a "hardcore" promoting. Sure, BC had a lot of color pages but not the same as the gazillions that Hinomaru Zumou got and where is it?

And yeah, saleswise not that special... EVEN so, for a THAT bad series to made to the list is amazing. And come on, I'm not even a BC fan, I just find amusing how hypocrite you guys are based on your preferences. You WANT it to fail. Just assume that haha. And like Emdee said. Whenever BC is mentioned positively here people LOSE THEIR MINDS.

If you guys are that desperate WITHOUT the anime, my imagination just went oz thinking about when it arrives.
