I think that if Su-won wanted religion gone, he wouldn't let Xing keep theirs religion (at least according to pandaflavorcookies' translation - check up chapter 141, page 22. The Edited Manga group have instead only vague "affairs within boundaries" without specifying). I think it's pretty obvious that he doesn't like it, but it doesn't have to mean that he persecutes it. I wouldn't even say that he's an atheist, since he's been clearly aware of Yona's divine status, he's just angry at the gods or something like that, possibly due to personal or half-personal (if it was over the state they let Kouka fall into) matters.

Also, just to be clear, I'm too a believer. Or well, I want to be a believer, but the more cynical part of myself keeps whispering that an All-Good God watching over us sounds too good to be real =.= But despite all my internal problems, I do respect religion and take part in practices.

However, I dislike the way religion is set up in AnY so far, where it's clear that Kouka's religion is true - since the dragons are real - and none other country had their religion even explained. It sounds too much like Japanese nationalism, together with the fact that according to their mythology, as far as I remember, only Japan was intentionally created by the deities, and the rest of the world was created by accident and is hence of secondary importance.

There was an uprising...the whole firetribe rebelled on the basis of religion (hiryuu). Firetribe head had other plans ofc, but the people believed they are true descendants of Hiryuu. Maybe if their religious sentiments were taken care of, that wouldn't have happened, who knows.
Soo Jin planned the revolt under the religious King Il. His revolt was based on his belief that he was a descendant of King Hiryuu...The revolt was more a daunting example of the end of a religious fanatic. His own man deserted him, because he acted unwise, foolish and didn t care about them, whereas the person, who didn t believe in any god, did value the Fire tribe (Soo Won).

I
am not really speaking about Yona, but just about having religious people be part of the advisory of Kouka. But, only those who aren't after power like Ik-Su. A king like Soo-Won who is a good judge of character should be able to fish them out.
I am not even sure, that Yona would wish that and Soo Won is completely against it. Yona doesn t consider herself the head of a religion. That is another reason why I don t think that the priesthood will have a great impact on the future politics in Kouka.

I don't agree here. Most modern day countries are a mess and corrupt. They could do with some "wisdom" of the sages and spiritual masters.
Today many different people with different backgrounds and religions live inside a country, wouldn it be unfair to them, when their life would be more influenced by a religion they don t believe in?
Many of those modern countries still base their civil rights or constitution partly on the religion that prevailed there for hundreds of years, maybe even thousands of years. And even that leads already to problems and conflicts inside these countries.
In a multicultural society...the orientation on one religion could lead to a greater oppression of minorities.

Yes like I said, I think Soo-Won doesn't oppress religion, but rather, just doesn't like the idea of it. So I just hope he will become more open minded, and divine and state can work together somehow by the end of the manga - like Yona and Soo-Won have been doing.

Also, just to be clear, I'm too a believer. Or well, I want to be a believer, but the more cynical part of me keeps whispering that an All-Good God watching over us is sounds too good to be real =.= But despite all my internat problems, I do respect religion and take part in practices.
Hehe, I am agnostic like I said, I believe in a higher divine power - more inclined to spirituality actually.

Unsure of Japanese nationalism. You always bring up new stuff that I need to research about later :^_^. Thanks for thaaat.

How was Soo Jin able to gather support of the soldiers? By proclaiming himself as a religious head. The uprising was quelled, but the people still believe in a Hiryuu and now worshipping Yona after seeing her on the battlefield and rumours spread by soldiers. I wouldn't be surprised if the firetribe people want Yona to be head of Kouka - though we all know that Yona will fortunately refuse.

Which is why I believe their sentiments should have been taken care of somehow.

I believe spiritual laws (that basically stem from religious) scripts can relate to everyone, but that's just a personal opinion.

Are you going to deny that the people of the firetribe believe they are Hiryuu's descendants, which is a religious matter, hence a rebellion based on religion. Su-Jin manipulated the people into believing he is Hiryuu's descendant and gathered support which is once again a religious matter.

I did not say it was because priests were thrown out, but if religious sentiments were acknowledged, maybe the people wouldn't have felt the need to fight for the rights of their descendants. For example, if there could have been a yearly festival in the firetribe, honoring Hiryuu, with all the tribes participating in this - conducted by priests - maybe the firetribe people wouldn't feel the need to be represented at all and start a fight.
In this case Su-Jin used religion as a mean to gain power. He started the rebellion, because of his lust of power, so the origin of the whole rebellion was not religious. Religion was used instrumentally like it is often used in politics.

I doubt that Su-Jin would be content with some festival if he wanted power. Besides, there is nothing to indicate that such festivals are banned.
Even now the people are worshipping Yona...they clearly believe in Hiryuu still. What is Soo-Won going to do about that? Just deny it all together?
I think he will need to do something about it. After all, by revealing her identity Yona split the country and he wants to unite it.

Soo-Jin might not have been content, but maybe the people might have been content and soldiers might not have supported Su-Jin.

Even if he does something about Yona, the people will still want someone to honour their God Hiryuu. What will he do about that? There could be many other Soo-Jins down the line.

Festivals are not banned, but not widespread either, but every tribe has their own traditions and festivals. Why can't all tribes be a part of each other's religious festivals? That is also another way of getting the tribes closer to one another as there is still a general sense of mistrust amongst the common people of the tribes.

I am not sure about the Fire Tribe. The problem is Yona doesn t consider herself a head of a religion...and apart from that...I think Kyoga may not be too happy about her interference...

Not if the spiritual laws are against your own beliefs or culture. Then people won t tolerate it. Even now...there is a lot of friction.

Yona will not want it, but the people might want it for her. So Yona will have to find a way to deal with that.

About spiritual laws, like I said, it's a personal opinion. Spirituality basically preaches about happiness, being in the present moment and being dispassionate. Things I feel countries would benefit from. But I get where you are coming from too.

As it is now...there are Kyoga and Tae Jun and since Kyoga is still the head of their tribe and pretty valued by his own people...Not all people might follow Yona. Apart from that ,that Yona is the daughter of King Il will be also of importance in the following events.

Maybe before they celebrate the festivals of the other tribes, a common reason to celebrate could be found...all in all I agree, the tribes should start to cooperate more.
Soo Won is up until now the unifying matter that holds all tribes together, but with Yona s intervention...maybe there will be great problems.

Still, nothing to indicate that festivals are banned, so nothing is stopping people from making one. In fact we know that there are festivals in the Water tribe.

Another topic...Could somebody explain to me why Hak s grieve is so much more prominent than Yona s or that of every other character? I don t really understand it. It s not supposed to be some criticism. It just puzzles me.
I think that it was a shock to him and that it did indeed hurt him very deeply, but Yona s father is the one who died, so why?

I guess that:
1. They were closer than it seems. We are used to seeing fluff from Hak-Yona childhood relationship, but they are hints that Hak-Su-won was just as close (safe for the crush part... I mean, who knows what Su-won thought ;) ). Hak's first reaction to Su-won's betrayal was denial (asking if he's drunk, stating that he's not the one to fixate himself on the throne etc.).
2. He likely blames himself for noticing. He was also a bodyguard, and while technically he's assigned to Yona, he likely blames himself for not noticing anything and thus partly for Il's death.
3. Su-won threatened Yona. See that it didn't go the other way round - he didn't attack Hak until Hak stepped up to defend Yona. And well, obviously Hak's obsessed over Yona, and she was also absolutely defenseless at that time.
4. Yona likely has a broader look - she sees what good Su-won did for Kouka, and she's able to set aside her feelings, at least partly. Likely she's not that bloodthirsty person in the first place, while Hak is first and foremost a warrior.

But the more cynical me thinks that it's because the author realized that Hak's didn't have much characterization at that point, and decided to add some.

Well, haks been busy keeping yona alive so processing his emotions is the least of his concerns- until soowon and hak meet and it ends in an angry outburst. Yona cried over it, was depressed over it in the first few chapters all the while hak was doing the practical stuff.
But im not saying yona is completely healed... i even think her way of finding reasons why soowon killed her dad- rationalizing his behavior, is her way of coping at the moment. She has yet to discuss what happened that night to hak and even the dragons bec she probably cant bear to relive the pain.

Hak had his outburst in the water tribe when I remember correctly.

I am not sure if it is just plain rationalisation, since she really watched the events...I think Yona is maybe choosing the more difficult way.

To me its rationalization. The way i see it, shes excusing soowons behavior by putting blame on her father. If she continues doing it, im afraid she’ll be at a point where she’ll think ‘soowon is blameless and its all my fathers fault anyway’. If she does reach that stage then whats there to forgive? It aint soowons fault anyway.
Plus, yona is going by the wrong route. Soowon didnt kill il bec of how the country was managed, it was primarily to exact revenge for his father, bec soowon thinks il killed yuhon.

If it would be just plain rationalisation...she would have not needed to see Soo Won s actions. She could have just invented a few things.
Also Yona cried when she realized, that the country of her father had many problems, but her father didn t provide the necessary changes.
So she didn t want to see it, but she was strong enough not to avert her eyes...A strength that maybe just Zeno possesses next to Yona.

I think that she is not in danger to excuse his behaviour. You can see that she confronted him earlier...A part of herself is still mad, but the rational part of herself is putting the picture together. She refuses actively to hate somebody...So I cannot perceive her wish to understand the situation and act accordingly as a mere weak try to rationalize Soo Won s behaviour. Yona is stronger than Hak and Soo Won, most likely stronger as King Il...

If you think about the talk with Judo, that Soo Won immediately put his plan into practice...how he tries to strengthen the country from within, ect...then it is save to say...that he didn t come up with the idea after the murder, but he already intended to follow through with his plan before.
So no. Revenge is one reason, but not the sole reason. More a mix of both reasons. Also if Yona would want to put blame on her father...why not do that by mentioning the murder of Yu hon?

The reason why soowon killed king il, to which he explicitly said to yonas face was, king il killed yuhon and now he(soowon) will fulfill yuhons dying wish. Now, i have no idea why it still hasnt sink in to yona but thats primarily why. Is it amnesia? Selective memory? I dont know... bec for some reason she still wished to see soowon in a positive light. In her desperate attempt to understand him, she stumbled upon the truth that her country isnt all that good as she originally thought. Now... i have nothing against her finding out the truth, its good for her growth, BUT for her to tie the idea that il was killed bec of how he managed the country is way off the mark.

Im not saying she’s weak. She’s coping, but she’s not weak. But i have to disagree with you on what you said about yona being stronger than hak. If hak had been sobbing and too distracted after soowons betrayal, then both he and yona would have long been dead. The reason why yona has been coping well is partly thanks to hak. Yona was able to cry, get depressed but still be up her feet is bec hak has been protecting her for the many times shes distracted. Thats why hak hasnt really been processing his emotions on the betrayal bec hes busy keeping both of them alive. King Il isnt really weak in my eyes. He was preceeded by a father who conquered lands for glory and power. Kouka was practically the strongest back then BUT to forego all that and push for peace is worth commending. But i wont excuse his inaction to some issues as well. And... i agree that yona is stronger than soowon in terms of letting go of hatred and not resorting to vengeance.

Well, soowons character has been portrayed as a strategic planner not the impulsive sort. Revenge and fulfilling yuhons wish is soowons primary reason, he said it himself. It was yonas own rationalizations why the readers are tying the idea of il’s murder as soowons reason.

That doesn t change the fact that Soo Won is trying to restore the kingdom...Revenge surely was a reason, but not the only one.

Is it amnesia? Selective memory?
Yona would have to face Soo Won s grieve, if she would accept that her father killed the uncle when Soo Won was just a 9 year old boy. I think it is easier...even with every failure her father committed a part of her doesn t wish to see or know it. But that is just my impression.

I dont know... bec for some reason she still wished to see soowon in a positive light.
Yona loved Soo Won, as a childhood friend, cousin or even as a lover. If a person I trusted so much would betray me, I would love to understand why.

In her desperate attempt to understand him, she stumbled upon the truth that her country isnt all that good as she originally thought. Now... i have nothing against her finding out the truth, its good for her growth, BUT for her to tie the idea that il was killed bec of how he managed the country is way off the mark.
Il was killed because of the way he managed to country. Judo or other of Soo Won s fraction wouldn t have helped him otherwise. They weren t mad that Yu hon was killed, but that King Il acted unwisely as a king.

Im not saying she’s weak. She’s coping, but she’s not weak. But i have to disagree with you on what you said about yona being stronger than hak.
She is stronger than Hak. She can face Soo Won, but Hak still can t.

Yona was able to cry, get depressed but still be up her feet is bec hak has been protecting her for the many times shes distracted.
Yona was trying to look at the situation, to be strong, to prevent the circle of hate....it is not just coping. And it was a way of healing herself...Not entirely...but she is on her way...Hak is far more stuck in the past.

Thats why hak hasnt really been processing his emotions on the betrayal bec hes busy keeping both of them alive. But i agree that yona is stronger than soowon in terms of letting go of hatred and not resorting to vengeance.
Hak could have processed his emotions. After 125 chapters he faced his grieve the first time. It is now rather the other way around...Yona the one who is hurt, has to look out for Hak.

It s shown througout the whole manga, that that was likely not the only reason.

even if soowon was trying to restore the kingdom in yonas eyes, it also doesnt change the fact that he killed king il bec it was to avenge his father and fulfill his dying wish. soowon said that in chapter 2. let me say this... even if king il were such a wise and benevolent king to the people, soowon would still kill him. mainly bec he loved and adored his father and took it upon himself to correct the injustice done to his father.
Yona loved Soo Won, as a childhood friend, cousin or even as a lover. If a person I trusted so much would betray me, I would love to understand why.
im not against her understanding why but all im saying is, she's way off the mark to tie how king il managed the country and the reason why hes dead.

Il was killed because of the way he managed to country. Judo or other of Soo Won s fraction wouldn t have helped him otherwise. They weren t mad that Yu hon was killed, but that King Il acted unwisely as a king.
King il was killed by soowon for personal reasons. now, soowon def cant pull that off without help. so , he enlists judo. how does he convince him? promising him to manage the country better, blah, blah, blah. For the regular members of soowons faction who were mostly from the sky tribe(yuhons former turf), they must have been enamored by him bec hes yuhons son, blah, blah. For keishuk, who knows... he was part of yuhons household, he mustve been a yuhon die hard as well. To each their own i guess.

She is stronger than Hak. She can face Soo Won, but Hak still can t.

everybodys diff. in terms of their pace and ways in dealing with betrayal and grief. Hak is still in the anger stage i have to admit but he'll get there although i wouldnt say yona is stronger. This is not the first time hak faced his emotions on the btreayal and grief. it all started in chap 86/90 during the nadai arc. from then on we get to see him open up about soowons betrayal and the hairpin to the dragons.
It s shown througout the whole manga, that that was likely not the only reason.
what was explicitly said in the manga (chap 2) is the reason why soowon killed king il. what was heavily implied in the manga (accdg to yonas rationalizations) was that king il was killed bec he was an incompetent king

For keishuk, who knows... he was part of yuhons household, he mustve been a yuhon die hard as well. To each their own i guess.
How should he have done it, without the help of the guards? Or the reaction of Judo and the Generals? Without these people, the coup would have been far more risky, maybe nearly impossible. They participated, because King Il didn t act like he should have...at least in their opinion. Many people were not content under the rule of King Il.
There is also the question if such a good king would have really killed his own brother.
So King Il s own death is tied to his failure as a king and Yona is partly already aware of it.
By the way Judo knew about Soo Won s abilities.

everybodys diff. in terms of their pace and ways in dealing with betrayal and grief.
By facing..I mean he is contemplating about it...I don t mean just lashing out.

what was explicitly said in the manga (chap 2) is the reason why soowon killed king il. what was heavily implied in the manga (accdg to yonas rationalizations) was that king il was killed bec he was an incompetent king
Oh. So you are aware of it, that it is not the only reason.

If you look at the people who participated in the coup, they have some ties or connection to the sky tribe, which was yuhons ex-turf. Anyone from the water tribe? Wind? Earth?

And i will say this again... even if king il were a competent and benevolent king to the people, soowon would still kill him.

What abilities are you referring to?
By facing..I mean he is contemplating about it...I don t mean just lashing out..
Oh he’s contemplating it... the chapter where the hairpin was lost and we get to see haks monologue about the betrayal.

Oh. So you are aware of it, that it is not the only reason.
Like i said, i wouldnt be so keen on believing yonas rationalizations bec theyre just a defense mech. Fact is, soowon killed king il for revenge and to fulfill yuhons wish. Thats the primary reason which were soowons own words.
