The arguments of what sales more and what boost it got from the anime, became pointless 2-3 years ago, when digital market became strong. Unless you know how much a titles sold with digital sales, it pointless to argue what sales more (unless there is huge difference in numbers). And that is because some series are probably selling better as digital, while others as physical. While one series may have 30% of it's total sales as digital, other may have 70%.

And then there is this article, stating that last years digital sales overtook the physical sales - https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2...print-editions-japan-first-time/#.WrvG63--mUk

So you can continue argue which sales more based only on the physical sales, but you will be always wrong :) Well it can still measure if it sales decent or not. Hopefully one day we will start getting digital sales data too.

Here in Spain Slam Dunk was popular, but the title which was monstruos was Captain Tsubasa, known here as Oliver and Benji. Everybody watched the anime series for decades.

I'd say here in Spain, Captain Tsubasa is biggest Jump hit after only Dragon Ball.

My top 10 of Jump titles in Spain by popularity would be Dragon Ball > Captain Tsubasa > Saint Seiya > Yu-Gi-Oh > One Piece > Death Note > Naruto > JoJo > Shaman King > Kenshin or Yu Yu Hakusho
Naruto has always been more popular than One Piece here until 2014 or so. One Piece anime never really got the people, and the manga was so badly edited and translated that people didn't buy it until the publisher changed all the old volumes translations and used new paper. On the other side, a lot of people were introduced to manga by Naruto.
Even Bleach was way more successful here than One Piece, it sold more per volume (at least what comic shops were allowed to announce) until Glenat changed to EDT and lose all their mangas.

Sales are only estimates though.

and RxL number did provide a glimpse into how much digital sales are contributing to the overall number, thus it is valid to make additional educated estimates using that number to set a baseline for what jump series could potentially be doing, as detailed admirably by @101nemesis above.

For what we know, a digital manga can sell a lot and another one can sell very little. Until we get proper digital estimates or stats, I think it's fair to continue comparing print sales, they do matter and they're better than just saying, you're all wrong xD .

So you can't really know if someone's always wrong. :)

pretty weird situation in Jump this week

one of the New World awards winners forgot to write his name on his oneshot and now they're looking for him

That's funny, what is this, Hibiki?

Tsubasa is HUGE outside of Japan.

You have professional soccer players talk about it on the news.
But also inside Japan. Is the manga that has practically allowed the birth of the national soccer team of Japan, let's realize ......

I'm making this post in my boredom.

Usually, Jump merchandising starts with Kochikame, then Cobra and Kinnikuman. I'm posting 10 titles from before Kochikame (in fact 9, 10th one is between Kochikame and Cobra) that in popularity and merchandising terms, should be put by Shueisha at the same level of rest of its titles. Let's review quickly the 10 jewels of 70s Jump (since it would create a big post 'cause cover pics, I'll post following stuff in spoilers):

HARENCHI GAKUEN (by Go Nagai, 1968)

The controversial manga which started echii and ******. Nagai a madman who killed all their characters, ten resurrected them back

OTOKO IPPIKI GAKI DAISHO (by Hiroshi Motomiya, 1968)

The manga that shaped Shonen Jump (made Kurumada turn into mangaka, influenced Tetsuo Hara or Akira Miyashita. Mankichi Togawa was the first Jump hero. Action manga about delinquent bands and Togawa's journey into becoming the most badass man in Japan. Ginji was first Jump bro.

DOKONJO GAERU (by Yasumi Yoshiwara, 1970)

First Jump long manga and anime, lasted almost all decade. Humor adventures of Hiroshi and the frog Raponchi which lives in his shirt. Very very funny manga (Gutsy Scans doing now subs for anime).

SAMURAI GIANTS (by Ko Inoue, 1971).

First Jump succesful spokon, goes about Banba, a very hot blooded guy who has too much physical power and wants to join Giants pro team.

KOYA NO SHONEN ISAMU (by Soji Yamakawa and Noboru Kawasaki, 1971).

Kawasaki did previously the very succesful Kyojin no Hoshi. This manga monopolized almost all Jump covers in its time. Western hardboiled adventures manga.

ASTRO KYUUDAN (by Hiro Tozaki and Norihiro Nakajima, 1972)

First Jump title with super powers. Very crazy baseball manga. Unlike previous titles, it didn't get anime adaptation, but got PS2 game and real live TV series. Think about it as fantasy powers + martial arts baseball version of Inazuma Eleven.

PLAY BALL (by Akio Chiba, 1973)

Akio Chiba was little brother of Ashita no Joe author. Got anime in 2002, last year its sequel Play Ball 2 started in Ultra Jump. Takao Taniguchi quest to play baseball despite having one finger broken, and to make his baseball team go to Koshien. This manga in fact is spinoff of Captain (1972) written by Chiba in Monthly Jump. First Jump manga to win Kodakusha Awards (the ones won by Neverland last year). Interesting fact: when a captain from Captain graduated from middle-school, he was added to Play Ball cast which happened in high school.

CIRCUIT NO OKAMI (by Satoshi Ikezawa, 1975)

Made Grand Prix very popular in Japan. Precursor to Initial D. In this manga they raced with famous marks like Ferrari, and you found strange cars (there was a nazi car there). MC wants to go pro and compete in grand prix, he's also a pervert. Got a live-action movie, but it suffers currently in Shueisha marketing stuff for lacking anime series. It got a sequel with another MC with same personality, Gainax did an OVA in lates 80s (Modena).

DOBERMAN DEKA (by Buronson and Shinji Hihramatsu, 1975)

Buronson debut. Think in City Hunter, 10 years earlier and by Buronson. MC is a Tokyo Metropolitan Police, who is very badass and hardboiled, and fights against crime with his gun. Like Circuit no Okami, got live-action movie but suffers currently in Shueisha marketing stuff for lacking anime series.

RING NI KAKERO (by Masami Kurumada, 1977)

The manga that definitively shaped Shonen Jump. Picked Otoko Ippiki and Shonen Isamu action, and Astro Kyuudan super powers craziness, in boxing. Takane and Kenzaki was first Shonen Jump big rivalry. Also, first manga which went to ''conquer World'' (World Junior Tournament). Ring ni Kakero influenced Kinnikuman, Captain Tsubasa, Hokuto no Ken, and Dragon Ball. First Jump title to get final chapter in full color (an honor only Dragon Ball, Naruto, Slam Dunk and Kochikame also achieved).

If that number is accurate then Black Clovers "true" volume 15 sales around 391,416, thats assuming that digital sales have the same time table as physical sales. As a comparison to the 60% rule for digital sales MHA would be around 865,206 so Black clover 's current volume is doing about half of MHA's current volume sales with just 1 season compared to MHA 2 seasons. I'm in no way implying these numbers are correct or that the 60% applies to all series I'm just using the "60% possible sales" not accounted for in data we have access to.
Dude I can do that too here BnHA vol 10 sell 370k for only 10 days add the 60℅ that means 592k and it only have 1 season at that time. Then Compare it Black Clover with 391k(24 days) and more episodes.

I have a feeling that Noah Notes will be a battle shonen, with the notes granting the holder powers, I wonder if it can actually be interesting tho if it really is?

Rather than being a battle shounen, it's probably designed so that it could turn into a battle shounen if the original plan's reception is eh. I feel like these days though becoming a full battle shounen would be more likely to just hurt its rankings.

Is there some sort of dick measuring contest between Bnha and BC that I'm unaware of? Every time the sales get posted here someone brings it up. Why doesn't BnHA's manga sales get compared with Haikyuu or AssClass?

A bit offtopic:
In case anyone is interested in a "new" Seinen manga with lots of potential, Fallen Angels recently scanlated chapter 1 of "Radiation House", which has been running in Grand Jump since 2015.
IMO, the first chapter looks really promising and I wonder how a manga like that went unnoticed by Edited Manga groups for such a long time.

I wasn't being serious when I added that line in MHA was already selling a bit more at the time, though at that point I'm not sure if digital sells where selling more than physical, but that doesn't really matter. Even though I vastly enjoy Black Clover more then MHA, especially as of late, I was never a supporter of the idea that it would sell more then MHA even after it got an anime. In my opinion comparing numbers to prove a series is better then another is pointless each series has its pros and cons that appeal to someone on an individual bases.

Sooo...it becomes Hungry Joker if it does go that road which isn't the most promising future, but we'll have to wait and see.

With the last chapter NN is on it's way to become a battle shonen. They explained that there are other special people like the professor, a rival group was introduced and one of the rival group members caused some kind of firestorm.

Because people have a personal vendetta against anything BLack Clover, heroaca loyalists also dont want to cast a negative view of their precious series, so they wouldnt ever compare it to the much more well performing Assassination Classroom. Even when they compare it to Haikyuu!! they only compare peak HeroAca to ~post peak Haikyuu sales, but not peak Haikyuu!! sales.

Fairy Tail
The editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano revealed some stuff about the new series to expect in a radio interview today/yesterday it seems.

- For the next (new) serialisation meeting they have 15 to 20 series submissions.
- They do not decide beforehand how many series actually get serialised. If you pass "the hurdles" you get serialised no matter how many other series got an ok as well.
- Some new authors for Jump will be 眞藤雅興 and カワサキ (and release in one of the upcoming serialisation rounds), both newcomers. Though the first, SHINDOU Masaoki did the oneshots Sky Claw and Joreishi Rentaro no Yakusoku. Don't know who the second is.
- Shimabukuro's (Toriko) new series will be about Architecture Battles...
- When he became the editor-in-chief in 2017, he made Shimabukuro, Kishimoto (Naruto) and Kubo (Bleach) promise to each make a new series for him (as in while he's the editor-in-chief).

Nakano also used to be Kubo's editor, so look forward to it and shit.
