Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

Given he has to touch the ground, at the very least, I don't think it's Awakening. But then again, Oda's changed a lot of things since Alabasta, including Croc's own power, so there's a good chance it could be.

Been rewatching one piece anime, got to thinking about Crocodile. What do you think the chances are that his ability to dry things out and make sand is an awakening ability? It looks almost exactly like he two awakenings we’ve seen, canon that is.
So because Doflamingo and Katakuri could produce strings and mochi from other items, you think Crocodile's ability did the same?

Thats an interesting theory, it surely is possible. He also knows quite a bit about awakening so...

But Katakuri also had to touch the ground...

I forgot about Katakuri, lulz. If Crocodile can make sand out of anything, even a building, then he likely awakened his fruit.

I think we can basically confirm that Crocodile has Awakened, given his knowledge of awakening and how it mimics others who have utilized it.

Futher backed up by Oda heavily foreshadowing haki way back with Zoro vs Mr.1. Oda is PLAYING chess while we are all DICUSSING checkers lol

I agree with the Crocodile's Awakening prior, but not the Zoro can do Haki or even unlocks it then cause it lead issues to his next major arc of Skypia when he fought Enel, so I think his fighting style was referring to something else than Haki.

Love the comparison! I’m willing to bet that he used Crocodile as a basis for awakening. And by that I mean I don’t think he had awakening planned out before the time skip.

I think Zoro using haki against Mr.1 was his haki awakening. After that I don’t think he really trained it until his training with Mihawk. He even said at one point something like “I can’t really say I’ve grown until I can use that power at will”, implying that he didn’t have any true control of it at the time.

I don't think Zoro was using Haki to cut steel. As Mihawk explained, with Armament his swords would never break again... and Zoro damaged his swords constantly probably because he was cutting though things like steel.

Besides Armament only makes things harder, and I don't think the reason Zoro couldn't cut Mr 1 body because his swords were not hard enough. Even if he had an indestructible sword, he would not be able to do it from the beginning.

Pretty sure he's awakened. i think Oda'll narrate a time when Crocoboy, Mingo, Mihawk and Moria were all pirates worthy enough to take the Pirate King title, but were cut short by the current Yonko's in terms of strength. They were the original shichibukai who even showed up for Roger's funeral.

If he didn't know how to use Armament, then it's not like he could use it every time he had to cut steel, especially if he got stronger every arc or so. But anyway, I don't think that was haki at all, just Zoro getting stronger because he was backed into a corner.

I hope so... BM vs Queen will be an excellent example of the difference in power levels between a Yonko, and a Yonko commander.
I'm afraid about what I might spark with my comment but. We have already seen the difference between yonko and a yonko commander. Luffy and kaidou. Garp and Marco ( it was a little too fast, but hell it counts).
We might say there are tiers on yc and yonko. I just can't see any Commander fighting for too long against a yonko by himself. Maybe if a commander have a really convenient fruit match up.

Well, Luffy's inexperience honestly doesnt make much of a case. Besides, are you saying Luffy is Yonko commander level?
And no, Garp and Marco doesnt count. Besides, what makes Garp a Yonko level?

Luffy was rash to take on Kaido. I dont think someone like Katakuri would be beaten so easily by Kaido. He has a better record than Kaido tbh. Same with Queen, dont think he'll shit in his pants nor will he brazen enough to go attack Mama...

Oh my bad. I must have missed something. I thought Breath of All Things was a type of Haki that Wano Samurai learned

I gotta admit I haven't been paying much attention to OP recently.

Katakuri vs Luffy was a mental battle as much as it was a physical one. To Katakuri he thought it was shameful to fall down as it means you are inferior, as he started to believe he himself was perfect due to all his siblings claiming he was so, and he couldn't understand why Luffy just kept getting up. For Luffy it was much simpler reasoning, to see his friends again, it was for other people.

Throughout the fight they both gained respect for each other. Katakuri started to understand Luffys emotions and kept letting him get up to test his resolve and in theory, his own resolve of being perfect. But Luffy already shattered that illusion of perfection and treated Katakuri no differently. So eventually Katakuri stopped caring about it as well. It was at this point Luffy "won" the mental battle. Shortly afterwards Katakuri realized there was an unfair advantage which meant Katakuris "perfect victory" was already impossible, it is also the point where he stabs himself to make it fair.

After the fight you plainly see where Katakuri got the idea of being perfect n a flashback, it was the ones he cared about being hurt that set him down that path. Something very similar to what causes Luffy to have that resolve of standing up again and again, the difference being resolve vs perfection. And in their mental fight resolve won. This essentially paints Katakuri in a new light and changes his character for the good forever.

A great many of us, probably most of the one piece readers outside of this forum, believe that Hyogoro was talking about haki when he was talking about teaching Luffy and mentioned the ability to cut steel, a few people think he was talking about BOAT as if it was something else and just interjected it into the middle of the conversation for basically no reason.

Not to get into physics, because it doesn’t necessarily matter in a fictional world, but you need something harder than the thing you are going to cut, in order to cut it. For example, you need something harder than steel, to cut steel. (Before people mention plasma cutters, they are melting steel not cutting it)

Is this a real question?? The guy was hinted to give gold Rodger a run for his money and was asked to be an admiral and even the PK respected him and you’re asking if he’s at that level?
I won’t say he’s definitely at Yonkou level right now, but I will say that he most likely was back in he Roger days. Before your post I wouldn’t have said so, but you make a very good point!
