Yui has reached rock bottom... Really bummed out about it since it seemed like it was just starting to find its footing. Watching a double harem could've been pretty fun ride. Has there ever been a series that was able to bounce back from a start this rough?
Kimetsu no yaiba was almost in discline, first vol 1 were even in "?". It had one of the toughest start

Besides the poor early sales, it was always well recieved. It's worst place on TOC was a Bottom 3 place (Issue where Love Rush ended) and that was even a fluke lol.

WHAT THE EVERLIVING FUCK IN THE BOWLS OF HUMANITY UPON THE ANUS OF THE COSMOS TO THE LEGACY OF JUMP WAS THAT
So it's pretty much a photoshop manga panels that moves. Man gag mangas are dead .
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

First Jump cover with all characters from current running, with Luffy being the newbie.

Next issue had another cover with all current mcs of that age:

Tbh it surprises me Ryotsu being the main lead, and Kenshin being in second tier. I mean, Kenshin was the dominant title in the age post Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk and pre One Piece and Naruto.

You can also see in these two covers Giorno from JoJo 5, Yugi, Midori, Takeshi, my boy Taikobou (Hoshin Engi), NuBe, Hareluya (BOY), and...some titles that I recognize but ended in Psyren tier (Wild Half or Meiryotei Gotoseijuro for example)
Funny that most of them are irrelevant for us western

I just noticed that the cover up top is the issue that Kishi debuted in with his one-shot, Karakuri. Man, time flies.

Traditional gag series, absolutely, series that have comedy as a focus element like Gintama, nah, they still very much have a market.

I don't know if these are what you'd call traditional but 4koma gag series still exist. Some like Aho Girl got popular enough to get animated as well.

Just like Samurai 8. Erm...whose idea was to start a ninja series in the same batch as Kishimoto's long-awaited comeback?

I wonder if something like Bo-bobobo could work today. Sure it was stupid and nonsensical, but there was more to it than just a series of unrelated sketches. It was a battle manga parody and as such, it had the same structure, with new characters joining the cast, antagonists looming in the background and all that and even plot. A ridiculous plot, but a plot nonetheless. I remember watching the anime and always being curious about the next Big Four, for example, aside from the sheer random hilarity.

Bobobobo-esque series could work today IMO. A recent example would be Chingiri since it was quite similar in how stupid and nonsensical it was to Bobobo and the one shot was well received.

It's all about execution. Gags are probably the hardest to pull off and make long running, which may be the reason why most mangakas avoid that genre. It'll add more stress to the already hectic life of a mangaka with how hard it is to pull off.

I really want a series like Bobobobo to return so badly. Jump is really missing a comedy like that.

The difficulty is how would you even approach such an idea in the modern era? Battle manga has over the last 15 years or so been pulled apart, rearranged and re-evaluated so many times that the classical ideas made famous by North Star and Dragon Ball, the ones Bo-bobobo was parodying, are basically irrelevant. In an era where logic is most powerful, how could something with a complete lack of logic mean anything?

That actually extends the issue. Yeah, Chingiri is funny, but the "parody" doesn't really mean much when the ideas it's making jokes about are literally decades old. It's also a pretty one-note premise, something Shimabukuro basically acknowledged with the punchline.

There's so many series to parody off in recent years though and even parody of classics are still welcomed. You don't have to do a parody all the time to make it funny. The wacky faces in Bobobo/Takeshi are hilarious, more so than parody at times.

Eh, I want a good shinhonkaku series in Jump. There really hasn't been one in the canon besides arguably Neuro.

I mean, David-kun was well-received, but it still failed to sell. Traditional gag manga is in a bit of a losing situation here.

No, it wasn't well received. The sales for David were abysmal even for a comedy.

Also, the ENG and JP community responses to things are basically identical from what I've observed through going through JP message boards and twitter, so yeah.

If Togashi had a regular publication, his fate would be death.

As an artist, working at your own pace can be a godsend. And I imagine being able to shower regularly, sleep decent hours, and see your kids often helps as well.
I am not talking about Togashi in my reply.

It aims at people who stubbornly claim HxH to be an ongoing manga. Hiatus is not ongoing, and HxH, just like is Berserk, Vagabond, is definitely not living, but more like a patient on coma.

There's plenty of successful gag manga around, they're just not in wsj. Sunday's like half gag manga these days.

What does that it even mean. It flopped....

Uhhh I don't know about that. David's JP community is probably a vocal minority and obviously aren't representative. Long story short, it deservedly gotten axed. David wasn't good IMO.
