I don’t think its that uncommon a view nowadays, honestly. Like people look at Dragon Ball more as a whole than OG/Z when it comes to the comics (I think, I’m sure plenty don’t), and thematically Buu saga connects the dots on the early days and the post-saiyan stuff really nicely.
Its waaaay too unnecessary stretchy, also ccyz its focused for 1 villian, it makes it even worse. It's like I watch the same frame for 10 episodes long, it's hard to enjoy... like super hard to enjoy. It bore the fk outta me, I had to skip alot of episode to just finish it.
[/QUOTE]

Ah see you’re on about the anime more than the manga, which is where we’re diverging

Wasn't there an interview with Toriyama and a couple editors where he talked about making stuff up as he went along during late Cell and Buu, saying he knew as much about what would happen next as the readers did? Since his editor at that point let him do pretty much whatever he wanted, he ended up writing whatever was fun in the moment never thinking ahead much.

It makes me curious about what other series have had very hands-off editors, I don't know if there's anything that immediately strikes me as maybe needing more editor input director other than Hungry Marie.

I think Kubo said in a radio interview that him and his editor didn't really see eye to eye. Like, he wanted to kill off certain Espada, but the editor forced him to keep them alive, etc.

Although, I guess that's not a case of being hands off.

Toriyama never really "planned" anything. Dragon Ball was written from the seat of his pants from the start to end.

Ignoring that editors can't "force" anything, that really doesn't seem plausible to me. All the Espada besides Grimmjow and Harribel were killed off, and none of them besides for Grimmjow and Ulquorra had the popularity that would justify editorial interference. I suspect that whole story is just an urban legend used to justify the Arrancar Arc being padded out to hell, when the explanation makes relatively little sense and doesn't explain why so much time was spent on random fights with minibosses.

Rain, read this interview.

- Toriyama says that there was a time after serialisation where he was very bitter and had health issues. He told his editor that he can't draw manga any longer, so his editor told him to write down his name. When he did that his editor said that if he can write his name, he can draw and laughed at him.
- Inoue says Toriyama's comics are very unique, so Toriyama tells him that he didn't really read WSJ much back then that's probably why. He says that once he was recommended to check out Slam Dunk which was very popular and drawn nice back then. He was told it was the hypest thing around. Inoue meanwhile says he felt that way when he first encountered One Piece and Naruto.
- Toriyama says that others can't help you at drawing what you really want to.
- Inoue says that he learned a lot about drawing during Slam Dunk's run, that's why the art is so different across volumes.
- One of them (unclear who) tried to get into Young Magazine, but settled for WSJ as second choice lol.
- Toriyama had only like 2 assistants throughout their works.
- At one point Toriyama was so tired, he only drew like 13 pages a week and wanted out, because he couldn't draw any longer. He was told back then that if Dragon Ball is not interesting for 10 weeks in a row they will let him go. Sadly Toriyama failed at making it uninteresting.
- Toriyama is like a textbook to Inoue
- Toriyama's first assistant was during his stuff before DB and in the beginning of DB with him, the second around the middle of DB onwards.
- Both of them said that if they look at the newest Jump Comics, it feels like these new mangaka are too influenced by the old comics that they've enjoyed. So although the artwork of WSJ Manga got better over time, for Toriyama and Inoue, a lot of personality was lost in the process. Toriyama adds that he thinks a lot of stuff is just boring and he'd rather see something that makes him go "Wow look at this guy, he must be stupid in the head! How amazing!".
That last part specifically makes me think of CSM's Fujimoto. AT would probably be a fan.

I mean, I already knew about those comments. And the debate about "personality" is one I've discussed a fair bit, so yeah.

My point is, editors do have sway. Why do you think there was so many androids? Why do you think Cell had so many forms? AT specifically noted that he fully intended on Androids 19 and 20 as being *the* main androids, but his editor told him to make cooler androids, so he did that with 17 and 18.

The constant new characters and transformations was mostly the idea of the editor. At least, in the Android arc. Not sure about the others. I know AT admitted that SSJ hair was the way it was in the manga because he didn't want to ink the saiyans hair anymore.

As others have pointed out, it's more of an honor thing. Torishima (the one who didn't like many of the Androids) was a close friend of Toriyama as well as his first editor, so of course he'd listen to him.

It's not just that, though. AT was literally locked into a room by his editor until he met his deadline. In fact, AT had abysmal working conditions for the most part. Towards the end of DB, his assistant literally quit, and his wife was forced to assist him.

Granted, it might be a unique case to AT specifically, but I'd wager it isn't.

It also hampers Samurai 8's momentum considerably, since rather than ending on the villain showing up (which is a good cliffhanger), it's instead...the love interest appearing and it being said that she'll be important. Lot less impactful, frankly.
I think the ending of Chapter 6 is a better closing of the volume than the ending of Chapter 7. Chapter 6 ends of a note that looks into the future, making a promise of things to come. Chapter 7 ends with a villain cliffhanger, which is cool, but not as wistful and promising.

Toriyama has a very...strange relationship with Dragon Ball, and manga in general. From what I've gathered, he basically regarding doing manga as little more than a job rather than a creative passion, and basically just ended the biggest manga ever because he got sick of it, not because he felt it was appropriate ending it. He's an odd character, someone with both considerable creative imagination and natural genius with a lack of care towards his craft, is what I'm saying.

That reminds me. To me it seems like certain series are written specifically for volume format, and not weekly.

It would explain pacing issues certain series have. Whether or not that's a good thing is debatable, obviously.

iirc that was one of his former editors who said 19 and 20 were lame, not his current one at the time. So it wasn't an editor-enforced decision so much as Toriyama just trusting the guy's opinion.

Fair enough, but locking him in a room and the name writing thing is a fair bit beyond that.

I mean, for all we know, Toriyama may be misrembering how the situation went. The man is infamous for having a horrendous memory.

About his series, not about personal accounts. Being locked in a room until you finish your job would mentally scar you.

It's not at all comparable with him forgetting aspects of DB.

That sorta thing always makes me think of Shinji Hiramatsu (Doberman Deka, Black Angels) and his weirdly dramatised biography of his time in WSJ called “I Become a Gedoh-man”. Like it literally has one of his editors beat the everloving shit out of him more than once, and has Torishima as a bit of a schemer, snidely manipulating creators into changing their work. It’s all exaggerated for drama’s sake, but there’s gotta be a kernel of truth to it all.

:gwah

I'm gonna assume that's a combination of artistic licences and bias, because some of that sounds kinda illegal...
