kkkkkk are you seriously saying that during the age where we had mangas like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Toriko, Reborn, Beelzebub and many other big hits Saiyuki would survive and become one of the greatest? Saiyuki would have been cancelled even earlier at that time...
Lol Really?, you can laugh but we dont know. The era was fuzzy enough since the big 3 was a big monopoly already. Reborn and other hits survived, so why not saiyuki

I have a separate topic of discussion for everyone.

If you could have Jump copy another magazine's successful series, which would it be? And by copy, I don't mean literal plagiarism, but somewhat similar in certain aspects.

Like, would you want Jump's version of Detective Conan, or Beastars, etc.
Probably its own Grand Blue, Kakegurui or Golden Kamuy. Shit, this reminds me of how close Shingeki was to being a Jump series lol

Interesting question.

I want to see a Jump version of Capeta, Gin no Saji, Yowamushi Pedal, Grand Blue and Beck.

I mentioned Capeta because is a manga about F1.
F1 is something that will be interesting to see in Jump.

Why Saiyuki not only didn't survive but sold terribly during a age and moment on Jump with so many places left open? And please don't use the "readers should put more effort in reading", they are doing this with mangas like Dr. Stone and Act-Age that are more text heavy instead of action and they always did.

I dont really dislike Saiyuki but you are really being delusional claiming stuff like that and saying "we dont know" when yes, we know, it would be the same big flop, specially at the time when Jump was much more ruthless.

I want to see WSJ's version of Magi, I loved the Arabian Knights inspiration and with the fact that the new Aladdin movie is the top selling movie in Japan for 2019 I would really want to something along those lines. It has a lot of potential and waaaay better/interesting than most of these western inspired series we've gotten lately like MHA/SxF/AoT...I would love to see more series like Magi/Hoshin that have these unique inspirations.

WSJ's version of TTGL would be very cool as I feel a mech series in general would be great.

i can’t particularly think of a series I’d like Jump to have its own version of.
But I’d like more variety in the type of series Jump already has, which I feel like other Shonen magazines already display.

- more variety in settings. Not everything has to be set in high school. I’d especially like to see a sports series that goes with a different setting than usually formula of “new kid joins a sports club”.
Maybe the series starts with the person already knowing the sport and they’re a beginner in the pro league.

Maybe a real sport in a fictional setting

Maybe the kids don’t play the sport competitively. Maybe it’s just kids who like playing the sport for fun after school or recreationally(Shuudan was sort of this)

- Less “this is a secret organization of *insert unrealistic organization*”
I love some series that do this, like Demon Slayer, but I much prefer the route of a character and his friends doing things themselves.

- More variety in ages of the characters.
Maybe more series where the MC is a young adult. Like in their early 20s
Or maybe series where the characters are young. Like elementary school age. Pretty much every series currently has characters who around 15ish-16ish. With Luffy and Senku of Dr.Stone being the only 18 and over heroes.

- More female MCs. We have more than usual currently, with Emma, Kei, and And Yui. But I’d like to see even more. Maybe even a series or two where the central cast is female series. An action/adventure manga with a Trio like Tanjirou, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, accept all girls would be awesome. Or a Quarlet like Gon, Killua, Leorio, and Kuripaka, but a ration of 3 girls and a guy or all girls.

- More series where the setting is either a place outside of Japan, or based on a none-Japanese culture. It’s a Japanese magazine, so obviously I expect most of the series to be in Japan. But I like when we’d get JoJo stories set America, and places you don’t usually see manga set in like Italy. Or Fullmetal Alchemist where it’s clearly a fictional version of Europe.

- maybe more series where the main character(s) isn’t human, or doesn’t take a incredibly human appearance

Most of this is just "I want to read Weekly not-Shounen Jump".

Wasn't this supposed to be questioning how experimental we felt modern Jump is? What happened to that?

Not necessarily. I think Jump series feel very different from WSM.
And a lot of these things on my list have been done before throughout Jump’s history. Jump has an example of a success for each thing I listed, except for maybe an entire action/adventure/battle series where the main trio is female.

I just think currently there’s a lot of trends that exist within the entire magazine, such as every single series having high school aged protagonist. And the majority of the action/battle series involving the MC adjoining some secret(or not so secret) organization that fights some XYZ

I think something I want a dramatic school-life/slice-of-life story, preferably without focus on romance. Something like Sket Dance with the dials for comedy and drama switched around. Nothing really heavy or dark, of course, just a more serious story about regular life.

edit: Koganeiro was sorta like this, I guess (and if I remember correctly). So that, but longer?

Yozakura and mitama, If these two new manga can beat any of the veterans (maybe act-age or we never learn for example, even Black clover and boku no hero now that the elves arc and the villain arc are over, their hype should decrease slightly), they may have a chance to survive.

I think if one of them can be better than yuuna is already a good size.
It doesn't even need to beat any of the veterans. Jump has, like, six free (or easily takeable) slots right now. If a series can consistently rank just below the veterans, it will survive.

Something like Liar Game would be cool (people get dragged into a game and have to try and outsmart one another). The genre is actually pretty popular right now, but for some reason not in Jump.

But I'd be down for almost any kind of mystery / detective series, as long as it isn't horror.

Shows we just have different opinions, cuz reborn and other hitters wouldnt survive if it was released this year. It's not delusional, just thinking how other manga survived at that time

It feels to me almost like Saiyuuki didn't even intend to have a journey in it. What kind of Journey to the West inspired series places zero focus on the Journey part?

Shinobi squad is really starting to feel like Higuma now, where it's a series with fun powers that could maybe do well if there was more effort put into the setting. Otherwise Double Taisei is still weird, Samurai 8 still fails to have any interesting characters, and Beast Children still isn't really doing anything to distinguish itself as a sports series you should keep up with.

I wonder how long it'll be until the next stuff gets cancelled, no doubt it'll be after the GFC, but I'm curious how long considering Saiyuuki lasted a pretty good length for a flop (I suppose ch 1 done well enough to get a slight extra chance?).

Asides from 2012-2013, the age you are talking wasn't more difficult than now to serialize a new serie.Things like Neuro or Psyren survived in that period.
Of course, saying that saiyuki would be a hit if it was released during that time is a dumb argument, but believing the contrary is also a weak argument.

if the last saiyuki had this journey that everyone is charging would be just another cliche.
The manga was focused on fighting the demons (like kimetsu no yaiba, jujutsu kaisen and chainsaw man) using characters from the saiyuki story.

Thank you, it's impossible to know for sure if a series would have had a better or worse chance of surviving in any era. We can speculate forever on how different circumstances would have made a series last longer, but at the end of the day it was still cancelled. It's a shame, but all you can do is take it as it is.

It was focused on infodumping using characters from Saiyuuki. The demon fighting bit was minor.

Also we need a good journey manga, the other battle shounen running right now besides OP are all mission based rather than having a long term journey, it'd actually stand out a good deal more if something went on a proper adventure for a change. I feel like it's been a while since we even got a flop adventure series.

already had many manga with journeys that were canceled on the jump, this is no guarantee of success. After all we don't know what the Japanese really want in the magazine.
