Soooo these sorts of series are basically designed as sacrifices of sorts? Is that why they're placed at the back?
I don't think they are necessarily sacrifices. It is just that it will be fine if they are a flop, while they still attract an amount of younger readers.

Also, it's still possible it becomes succesful.

I found the page in the forum with the twitter of the mangakas that commented this:

Shinohara: The reason Shounen Jump could stay on top is because its target audience was always younger than any other shounen magazines. Always maintaining a policy of bringing in new series aimed at kids, even if they are constantly axed. By keeping the door open for the young audience, you can secure brand new readers that are coming in. That said, the reader demographic have gone up in recent years.

Inagaki: Canceling a series may seem negative for adults, but kids don't care. They just go"Those past few weeks a lot of fun! It would've been nice if it continued". New series make it easier for new readers to join, at least for the first couple weeks. By no means is "series that ended short = failure". There are plenty of Jump manga that I love, even if they didn't get an anime.

Really enjoyed the 2nd chapter of Mission: Yozakura Family.

I think the Asano and Mutsumi are a cute couple and likable characters to me

thought the reveal of Mutsumi’s importance in the Family was an interesting addition to the story.
And I think the brother became a more likable character in this chapter. I like the dynamic that the brother has with Asano. He wants to kill Asano, but at the same time he realizes he can’t do that now, so he’s basically training Asano to protect Mutsumi. Pretty unique was to train the MC imo.

Don’t quite the complaints I saw earlier of the brother’s “abuse” being played for laughs

This...kinda explains why Spring Weapon No 1 lasted so long in spite of terrible sales. It was just useful as a tool of sorts.

That said, damn, this kind of paints a bleak picture of gag manga in Jump, doesn't it? What was once a viable genre in the magazine is now mostly relegated to an elaborate insurance scheme to ensure Jump maintains it's general audience.

Spring Weapon also had the advantage of doing marginally better than the newbies that quickly got axed. I think it usually did about 10k in sales for better volumes, down to 7k-ish for the lower volumes. Although these are incredibly bad, they're still better than many quickly axed series are, and throwing in that young audience leniency, it lasted much longer than everyone expected. Surprisingly, it actually had one of the most satisfying, conclusive endings to recent WSJ series.

I think speculating why a series lasted it long is pointless when we don’t see the results of the weekly poles.

It’s quite possible that Spring Weapon No.1 stayed in the magazine longer than most axes because it possibly had a solid enough fanbase of readers that enjoyed it being in the magazine.

this is always pointed out, but Hinomaru Zumo lasting so long, and receiving an anime despite low sales, and little to no growth, may have been simply because the series had a fanbase Of readers who simply just didn’t buy the volumes and just enjoyed reading it weekly in the magazine.

Just a guess like anyone else, but it think series like Spring Weapon, and Kamio Yui(assuming it doesn’t get the axe soon), are series where editors take notice that the series has a fanbase, but at the same time it isn’t popular enough to justify a multiple year run. So they may give it a longer than usual run instead of giving it a quick axe.

I doubt Shuiesha/Jump are just going to let a failing series run for a long time for no reason what so ever.

What's the series in the lower left corner? I feel as though I've seen it somewhere before.
Special Chapter's of It's Time for "Interrogation" Princess! by Haruhara Robinson (Story) & Harikei (Art) as well as Mutou to Satou by Akatsuka Taisho

Thank you! I was familiar with the Princess series, but had only seen a picture of the other one before. Seems like it could be interesting. The author also appears to be quite popular on Twitter, over 100k followers.

Damn gottaa admit I enjoyed Yozakura way more than I expected, both chapters sure had me hooked and I do enjoy the characters, evn the psycho siscon brother who does have his cool moments. I hope than in order for the series to stand out it avoids the self contained chapters and aims for more story arcs format early on.
Kinda like with 5 toubun in WSM, rather than have one shot chapters it started having more mini arcs and feels like the story is actually moving

Everyone, I'd just like to make a formal declaration. I've spoken to Rain directly. He will NO LONGER post incendiary comments about gag manga again.

While I believe people should be allowed to express their opinions, some opinions I feel are too toxic. The (lack of) viability of gag manga in the current era of Jump is one of those opinions.

I was wrong about Yozakura. I'm glad.

I was wrong about the girl in Mitama being a damsel in distress too. Tough in this case, I'm not sure if the alternative we got is any better.

2nd chapter of Yozakura was super good, it gave me some good Reborn vibes, even the Kyoichiro started to become a likeable person, the twitter jokes were hilarious too kkkkk.

Like i said before, if this manga doesnt get at least a good "first ranking" i dont know what the hell are the readers looking for in the magazine lol

Tokyo Shinobi Squad is...I honestly don't know. It's not especially terrible past the VERY questionable backstory, but it's become utterly directionless. I get that the author wanted to do something along the lines of Kekkei Sensen, but that doesn't really work in Jump, and the scenarios aren't interesting in spite of trying to include social elements.
Why are people upset about the backstory? Isn't it normal that crime rates will be higher in places that people can easily get in and out of?

Here in Europe, at least, border villages often have criminals from the neighbouring country coming in, doing their thing and getting out again. It doesn't mean that the people from said neighbouring country are all criminals or that they only want to rob foreigners or anything; it's just because they know that the police will have a harder time catching them when they flee over the border (because the police from the targetted country has no jurisdiction there).

So yeah, if you're making your city easy to access/flee with hyperloops (as described in the first chapter), you're also going to see this border crime effect. And if the police isn't sufficiently prepared to deal with it, you're gonna have problems... That's how I interpreted it, anyway.

Yeah...the literal first line of dialogue from the protagonist is him complaining about how globalization has ruined the country, so forgive people if they read a nationalistic sentiment from it.

Those weren't "complaints", the chapter wasn't out yet.

I said I was worried about it happening based on this colour page:

Chapter 2 CP for Yozakura.
Now that I've read the chapter, they completely avoided going that route. So happy. ^^

I really like the background in the painting like style on the Yozakura Color Page done by the mangaka's brother. Makes me wish they did the manga together, would have been nice to see a brothers mangaka duo in Jump.

First of all, "a nationalistic sentiment" isn't necessarily a bad thing. Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, nothing wrong with being proud of that or being sad when it's gone.

Second, I don't think you understand what "so much for globalisation" means.

When someone says "The third visitor today! So much for enjoying my lazy day off", it does not mean that they hate enjoying a lazy day off. It means that they wanted to enjoy a lazy day off and are sad that they can't.

When someone says "My make-up came off already? So much for it being waterproof," it does not mean that they hate waterproof make-up. It means that they wanted their make-up to be waterproof and are sad that it isn't.

Ergo, when the MC says "What's become of this country? So much for globalisation," it does not mean that he hates or even dislikes globalisation. It means that he wanted globalisation to happen (smoothly) and is sad that it isn't working out.

The explanation a few pages further also supports this:

"The goal was the superglobalisation of Japan. But what the policy brought about were <list of crimes>"

Once again, they are not saying that the goal (globalisation) is bad. They are saying that the policy failed to bring about the intended goal.

So yeah, the message of this story isn't "globalisation is bad." It's more like "What would happen if people went about globalisation the wrong way and we got a new world order because of it?" I don't get what's so very questionable about that, especially since "What would happen if kids were grown on farms to be eaten?" apparently gets a pass.
