I'll never understand why people think Deku is a unique protagonist
Beats me, he is like any other shounen protagonist. Since Yonagi and Deku are the front runners I need to make a quick comparison between them. Yonagi is a female protagonist, something we don't see very often and she is unique, something very hard to do these days and she demonstrates as much growth as Deku.

the fact that Osamu is no longer in weekly jump made this a lot harder for me
Yeah, if he had been in I would have voted for him asap. Dude is a true weakling trying to fight monsters and not winning yet not giving up no matter how often he gets sliced or blown to pieces. Huge respect for that.

Yonagi is by far the best right now, she is a very interesting character in all fronts. Act-Age has a lot of interesting characters, but she is the most interesting with her story, how she acts and how she develops during the story. Furthermore, she is funny as hell sometimes. XD
Yeah, she was my choice as well. It was either her or Denji with Itadori in 3rd place and Tanjiro in 4th. Denji is cool with his chainsaws and open desires but Yonagi just takes the cake with her acting and general behavior. That kitchen scene part lately was just creepily good. <3

Weathering with you: 11 billion going on 12. Shinkai's about to earn his auteur license pretty soon. I predict after his next movie makes another 10 billion (or at least close to it), Shinkai can ask for whatever the hell he wants and the man will get a blank check for it like Spielberg, Cameron and Nolan etc

Voted for Senku, I really like his personality. He might be my third favorite Jump MC, only behind Bossun and Saiki.
My full ranking:

02 - Deku
03 - Hinata
04 - Tanjiro
05 - Nariyuki
06 - Yonagi
07 - Itadori
08 - Gon
09 - Luffy
10 - Asta
11 - Emma
12 - Kogarashi
13 - Denji

I gotta say, for the most part, we have a very diverse range of opinions when it comes to MC favorites.

I expected everyone to get at least one vote, but Yuuna's MC not getting even one is pretty surprising.

The name was not revealed yet. It's a romcom one-shot written by Nisio Isin & Tsukuda and drawn by Tosh.
Hot Take: They're going to announce Yuuna's ending in the color page and try to make this thing the replacement.

I’m more surprised Emma only got one vote. I honestly thought she would be more popular here. I can understand Kogarashi not getting a vote since I don’t believe many people here really read Yuuna or talk about him much, and even then he’s still relatively basic compared to the others. (And with Gon, well, he’s overshadowed by his supporting cast to an extent.)

I was split between Deku, Yonagi and Itadori, but ultimately Deku won out, if just because of how he shows Jump's evolution.
What on earth are you talking about?

Kogarashi was a fun protagonist at first with a decently strong personality and had his whole punching ghosts thing, but as the series went on he shifted into the typical harem lead role, not really having his own personality anymore and just being a device for fanservice with occasional 'rescue the girl' moments.

Yuuna is not that popular of a series, but even if it was, I don't think anyone reads harems (specially ecchi ones) for the MC. There's a reason it's always the girls on covers and whatnot. I'm not even sure we should call him the MC when Yuuna is the one that always appears with other series' MCs whenever jumps has a collective cover.

Speaking of Neverland, maybe it's just me but I always find it strange that people don't really discuss it much, despite how popular it is. People heap praise upon it every time it is mentioned, but the actual discussion for the ongoing story is few and far between, at least for a series that is outselling MHA at the moment.

And someone just voted for Kogarashi just after people pointed out he didn't get a single vote.

For me personally, my enjoyment for the series has lessened over time. I still enjoy the main characters and what have you, but the shift from children outsmarting situations and escaping the farm to "demon" politics is something I really don't care for.

Feels very much like TPN is still riding partly on the hype from the first arc. I felt the same, it carried me for a while, but around the time of the Goldy Pond Arc, I just didn't feel like reading the series anymore and have put it on hold ever since.

I get why they did it, but in the process, it lost me pretty hard personally. That comment was more a bit of personal disappointment at the change in tone of the series.

The recent chapters have felt massively different from the first roughly dozen or so chapters. Any supernatural elements and delinquent fighting at the very beginning wasn't as serious, and reminded me more along the lines of Rokudou no Onna-tachi. There's a minor supernatural element there, but the romcom antics take center stage.
This. The first 13/14 chapters were romcom/comedy with some supernatural elements, but from chapter 15 on it feels more like a supernatural horror manga.

I suppose there are people who prefer it this way, but I liked it much better before it got dark. :(

Jesus Christ, seriously, you have a series from a author that has like a 100% history of dark and supernatural series, he start a new series that has literally the first page with dark Yui being sealed with supernatural powers, a climax where she violently beat delinquents and stating that there are many of them trying to find her, and just because the manga had the first chapters mainly as a "romantic comedy" (still with battles and supernatural elements happening between) it means that there was no sign or evidence that Shiibashi was planning the "genre shift"? come on, one thing is to like it or not, but blindly trying to refuse something so obvious? of course it didn't happened so smooth, the manga was dying in the rankings lol
Dude, maybe you have a habit of researching the entire history of the mangaka before you pick up a new series, but not everyone is like that. No need to mock people for going in blind and/or judging the story on its own merits.

And no, the fact that there were some supernatural elements and action scenes before does not mean that there was any evidence for a genre shift. Ranma 1/2 had lots of supernatural elements and fighting from the start, but it never stopped being a (romantic) comedy, now did it?

-"There's no mention of supernatural creatures or powers"

A monk seals a "person" with a bunch of chains tied in the hair and the girl needs to have the hair tied all the time because if not, the other "version" of her will come to life...Yep, no supernatural powers at all, that happens all the time, also, when you have a series by Hiroshi Shiibashi using supernatural powers related to old myths and religion you know that it will have youkais or overall supernatural creatures, you know, it's like 1 + 1 = 2
In the first ten or so chapters, the chain is the only supernatural element, and it's clearly just there to enable the premise. To say that that makes it a supernatural manga is like saying that Double Taisei is a medical drama because it deals with split personality syndrome.

-"The delinquents aren't shown to be threats..."

It's like you're just ignoring such basic ways of storytelling, of course the first delinquents didn't represent any danger to her, they were used just to make you understand that there are dangerous people trying to find her -_-
It's like you're just ignoring how comedy works. Ranma 1/2, Gintama, Dr. Slump, etc. also had people coming after the protagonist, but they never stopped being gag manga. Comedic action =/= genre shift.

Also, I really think that M+ comments are irrelevant for this one. I mean, M+ readers are waiting for "WSJ" series like One Piece, Dragon Ball, ect...you know, those mangas they read, like and talk about. Imo, they were waiting for this kind of series, so they are disappointed.
That's some of the most judgemental bullshit I've heard lately. M+ readers are people who like to read Jump manga, but have no access to WSJ or Jump+. How exactly does that make their opinion less relevant than those of any other Jump reader?

Also, yeah, Spy x Family is exactly like One Piece and Dragon Ball, obviously. That's why it's in the top 3, right? :eyeroll

Lol you include toy story 4 but not Weathering With You. It is now the top grossing movie of 2019 in Japan, surpassing Aladdin this weekend

The fact that Denji is leading the poll is both funny and kinda sad. Like I love Denji, but seriously?

I'll never understand why people think Deku is a unique protagonist
Deku has obviously got a lot of common battle shonen protagonist archetypes going on ; he's aggressively empathetic, self-sacrificing to a fault, and every character he interacts with finds themselves drawn to him. Nearly all the protags of the "big" shonen mangas have these traits. Luffy, Naruto, Gon.

The big thing that makes Deku feel different? He's smart.

90% of shonen protagonists, particularly the most popular ones, are impulsive dumbasses. Incredibly likeable impulsive dumbasses, but Luffy/Naruto/Gon are all kind of stupid and act on instinct. They're cunning, sure, and can figure out clever ways to win a fight, but they are absolutely not the puzzle solvers of the group. Deku, on the other hand, is incredibly analytical and tackles every challenge with strategy and observation. In fact, one of his weaknesses is that he'll often overthink a situation and be unable to react in time. It might feel like a small discrepancy, but it makes a lot of big battles and sequences play out very differently than they would in One Piece or Naruto.

His interactions with the rest of the cast also feel unique because his personality is such a contrast from those other characters. Instead of being loud, brash, and having an inflated sense of self-importance, Deku is pretty much the opposite. He's meek, overly polite, and has some big self-esteem issues that he wears on his sleeve (instead of big self esteem issues that he constantly represses, like everyone else). So there's a lot about Deku that's familiar, but the things about him that are new/uncommon to a protagonist in the genre make him feel really refreshing. I like him a lot.
