Here's a general question I think is worth asking:

Do you guys think Jump should always listen to the general consensus regarding new series and axe the ones which don't have an good reception quickly as soon as possible? Asking because, looking at Yui Kamio, I feel we could've been spared a colossal headache if Jump just axed Shiibashi early.
That's probably something that's best tackled on a case by case basis... but if I had to pick one or the other, I personally prefer the current trend of every series getting at least five months in publication. That way, a manga with a slow start has the chance to gain momentum and become good. If a manga hasn't gained momentum by that time, there's much less ambiguity about whether or not it deserves to be axed.

The obsession with axing a series if it's not amazing in 5-8 chapters has always been a bit weird to me. I think if WSJ adopted that attitude as a policy, the results would be more harmful for the magazine than productive.

The guy translating Yuuna will love the next chapter, because there is basically zero text to translate in it.

Eh, guess I can't disagree there. I do think though that keeping things around for five months is a double edged sword. It gives series a little more breathing room...but then you have cases like Yui Kamio, which really stayed longer than it should've considering its very poor quality.

I like Yui Kamio.

Why it is a colossal headache for the readers if this is mantained for a "long" time?

I mean Yui Kamio has survived, because the magazine doesn't have better sellers to replace it (also, the mangazine would be too empty if Yui Kamio is cancelled). So, it doesn't harm anyone.

Another question then, do you think a manga needs strong characters to survive? I mean that by quality of the writing, for reference.

Asking because, talking to my JP friends, it seems that half of the community values such things quite a bit.

I think good character writing is really important. There are countless examples of Manga where the story is average but i kept reading it because of the characters but vice versa i can't think of an example. I actually dropped TPN because of that like 90ish chapters into the Manga. The author never made me really care about the characters and for a Manga that is about survival, thats actually really bad. If i don't care if a character lives or dies, whats the point? TPN is a prime example of a Manga where the story is well constructed but everything else is lifeless.

On the other hand, One Piece f.e is a Manga where the cast of characters is so strong that even if the story arc wasn't that good, you still have fun just watching the characters do their thing.

TPN's character writing is intentional BTW, per that interview I translated.

Of course. Any fiction need. Well for justice if the plot alone strong it can carry on even with bland characters but decent plot +decent characters always better than just good plot.
But talking about Never I doubt that announcement is a movie. I meant officially is will be on 7th october. But that time nobody will considerate it news

So its intentional that Emma is the only character that is likeable? Its intentional that everyone else besides the main trio is forgettable? How was the reader supposed to care about
the deaths
in Goldy Pond arc if all we knew about them was a brief introduction? If its intended to be bad, its still bad.

The top guys at Shueisha and WSJ must be seething with rage that for the 3rd time in a row the leaked One Piece chapter is trending worldwide on Twitter. It's chapter discussion thread from r/OnePiece even reached the top of reddit's r/all frontpage.

I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing some very real legal crackdowns on J-Box and Mangastream at some point soon. Mangamura (the biggest JP supplier for manga piracy) has just had a case placed against it, and OP's pirated chapters getting so much publicity would most likely raise more than few eyebrows.

BTW, first person to make a "One Piece being pirated is fitting" comment gets shot.

People have difficulty to understand that not all choices are right just because it is intentional, it is just intentional bad writing. Emma to be the only likable is questionable, I for example, doesn't like her that much because of her bad decisions. Ray seems to follow Emma suicidal decisions because he likes her (this is very obvious), he blindly follows her decisions despite being smart himself. Norman is by far the most reasonable one when it comes to guarantee the future of humanity.
It has been long since I cared about what happens in TPN, I think since they left the place they were been raised. It is lifeless as you said in the previous post.

I would say "you shouldn't care too much" about that characters in Goldy Pond.
After all, if readers care too much about these characters, their deaths could alienate them.

Regarding the likeability of characters, that depends on opinions.

Funny thing, Rain Spectre asked if a manga needs good characters to survive.

TPN has survived (and it is pretty popular). So, if it doesn't have good character writing, it means a manga doesn't need good character writing to survive.

The beginning of TPN was really good and with Jump once you reach a certain threshold it is very unlikely that you are going to get cancelled or become unpopular because of the marketing, people just continue reading, like me.

Weirdly enough, I think plot-driven manga can do better with somewhat forgettable characters than with strong but unlikable ones. The Promised Neverland and Summer Time Rendering both have characters that don't stand out that much, but it works because for most of the story the mystery takes the spotlight and you care about them enough that you want them to survive. Shiki and Killer Instinct on the other hand have some more prominent and developed characters (IMO), but most of them are insufferable *****, so I kind of lost interest because I wanted them all to just go die in a ditch.

But this is also very good, reading to see if they are going to die or not. XD
Man, people were shocked when defended Norman and now I'm saying that I want to see people dying, people must be scared, but it is just a story, that's how it is. XD

just think of how easy other ip could be adapted into the Yakuza gameplay model, like instead of arena fighter #538338
Deku replace Kiryu, mc run around town to help people
Bakugo replace Majima, the rival, run around town stalking Deku and trying to pick up fights
All Might replace Komaki, the mentor, unlocks Deku's special moves
Kirishima replace Majima's goon, calls Deku every now and then to warn him about Bakugo
main quest replace some yakuza thugs, with some villain thugs
side quests replace helping the Kamurocho residents with helping UA students
minigames replace them with heroaca games, cavalry battle, obstacle course, licenses exam etc
karaoke song get replaced with anime openings

and voilà here's your game

but muh Kimutaku wank fest
For real bro, why is it so hard to make a decent anime game. Goddamn..

With Neverland probably ending in few chapters and Yaiba possibly in few months if the author doesn't try anything new, i'm kinda getting worried with Shonen Jump, while this has been the best year for Jump Plus it's not really the same with SJ, despite getting two big hits these two are ending soon and they already lost many other popular series in the last two years, we don't how much Haikyuu has left, Yuuna still selling decent but just that and it can end anytime, Chainsaw Man and Act-Age are decent success but that's it, Dr. Stone isn't reaching what was expected with all the promotions and we still don't know about Samurai 8.

Also Jump is currently working with two less mangas than the usual + 4 flops and 2 new series that we don't know how will perform but Mitama being a gag you shouldn't expect that much from sales, they will have to step it up next year (specially with Plus rising and stealing their talents) and also make sure that Jujutsu Kaisen has a really good anime/studio because it's what they have at the moment with potential to become big.
We had that same problem in mid 2010's, there will always be hits coming :^_^ . Some are meant to be hits like (the promised Neverland) and some are meant starting as an underdog (kimetsu no yaiba). No worriess

The Bleach adaptation was slammed critically actually and underperformed.
It was pretty average... let be real compared with all the other live actions. Bleach did it good

I was talking more about the Japanese reception being harsh (a lot of them didn't like the actress chosen for Rukia) outside its country of origin it has a much warmer reception.

that moment when hana is a decent actress (go watch 12 Suicidal teens) and people not liking her mostly because she doesn't look the part.

to be fair, in the Bleach movie she was just okay.
