At present it has little chance, the editorial year ends in november, it will go very close but probably will not make it ... I imagine that One Piece will do about 9 million or more and Kimetsu about 8.5 million
Unless One Piece 94 sells extremely badly, it should be way closer to 10M than to 9M by November 17th, considering it was around 8M as of September 29th. Same for Kimetsu, ~7M as of Sep 29, there is no way it sells only 1.5M in seven weeks with a new volume coming out.
The race between them, if it happens, will happen around the 10M mark
Point is, no point in talking about next year when this one isn't even over yet.
To be fair, the discussion that can be made on 2020 is barely linked to the one we are currently having on 2019. Some interesting points would be:
-If OP 95 releases on february (afaik it's not stated for Nov/Dec/Jan), does that mean there is a chance only 3 OP volumes get released for the 2020 Oricon year? (4 volumes if they all come out 3 months of each others, but only 3 if there happens to be 4 months between two of them as sometimes is the case) If there are no movie on top of that, could it actually get overtaken in 2020? (if it hasn't been in 2019 obviously)
-Will the HQ and MHA anime help their respective sales climb up again ?
-What about TPN, when will its season 2 air ? Will it have an effect on the manga's sales ? What about the Live-action movie ?
-Will the Kimetsu movie help its sales ? Was it a wise decision? (faster to make than a 26 episodes season, meaning it may come out while the Kimetsu hype is still going on)
-If Kimetsu and TPN ends before the end of 2020, will they still be able to enter the top 10 ? (Not Jump related, but the same question can be asked for GoToubun and Attack on Titan)
-The WSJ adaptations confirmed for 2020 are: MHA, TPN (anime+Live action), Kimetsu (movie), Black Clover, One Piece and We Never learn (well, late 2019, but still partly after the end of the oricon year) (and Boruto). At this point last year, we had one more (Dr Stone) and a One Piece movie, but Kimetsu had a full season, not just a movie, WNL and MHA count for both 2019 and 2020. So, when will the eventual Act-Age/Jujutsu anime be announced ? Scheduled for which season/year? What about the One Piece live action wildcard?
But none of those are linked to how well Kimetsu ends up doing for those last 7 weeks, or any other WSJ manga for that regard. Though I would still argue that most of those are rather pointless,
but not much more than discussing for ~4 months the hypothetical failure (from a sales standpoint) of Samurai 8 without any kind of concrete data
This has been one of the most interesting sales periods to say the least.
I can't agree more. And not just for WSJ stuff.
For the 2019 top 10:
2 manga might reach 10M sold (9M basically guaranteed), one more should reach 8M, one more for the 7M mark, add three more manga that could top 5M (one already has and could reach 6M) and the last three that are already above 3M of which two should pass 4M.
That's, at best, 62M sold for the Top 10, which is way better than the 51M of 2018, the 53M of 2017 and similar to the 61M of 2016.
This year out of the top 10, 6 manga received a considerable boost (Kimetsu, Kingdom, TPN, GoToubun, Kaguya and Slime, though Slime's boost had already started last year). Out of the top 10, 4 are likely to end in less than a year (Kimetsu, TPN, GoToubun and Attack on Titan).
Both of those facts mean that 2020 (and 2021) will look widely different from 2019.
