Shoseki estimated sales numbers for some of the newbies that were in the magazine this year. David 4, Ne0lation 2/3, Saiyuki, Jimoto, Taisei and Beast never charted on weekly rankings. Number of days are in "( )".

I guess those that are behind 2k copies don't rank. Still would like to know those numbers.

Since Act-Age Vol 1's early weeks never charted on Oricon, Shoseki is here! It performed surprisingly well for a debut manga from unknown mangakas.

Huh. Just realized this. Has there never been a female editor, ever?

I doubt twitter will consider this because now a days people are quick to outrage, but just because someone says something like that, that doesn't mean they refuse to hire female editors like people are assuming, he could mean his speculation as to why no or few women applying of be editors and that's why they don't have female editors.

Possibly related, Kazenshuu translated an interview with Torishima, and he said as editor and chief he tried to make the editorial department more coed, even though they didn't have female editors.

Well, you can apply the same logic for a man being editor of a shoujo manga, is quite obvious that a female editor will understand 100% times more what young girls wants in a shoujo series, the difference is that you will not see anyone complaining about it on twitter kkkk

#164 -> #320 Tokyo Shinobi Squad 2
#250 -> >#500 Double Taisei 2
#325 -> >#500 The Last Saiyuki 3
#405 -> >#500 Beast Children 2
Quite sad seeing all the newbies bombing hard as fuck on volume 2, not even a 2nd day for the new Taisei volume? is exactly when the manga gets good with the Tendo Era being introduced =/

Yeah, this puts the nail in the coffin to show how important it is to hook someone with the first few chapters. It is much harder for the average person to drop a series they've been following for a while if they think they already have a significant time commitment invested, but they won't want to risk catching up on a series that gets better if the start was too rough. It's such a shame that no one came back to it since Sei and the Tendo Era kids are all such interesting characters, with the slight exception of Dodo who I think had to have his arc rushed due to the impending ax

The editor in chief of Ribon, Shuiesha's longest running shoujo magazine, is a man.

And not just any man, he's Aida Souichi. He was in Jump right until he got shipped to Ribon as their new editor in chief. He's the one that started Bo Bo Bo, Reborn, and Bakuman.

Everyone, while I understand the discussion on female editors in WSJ is an important issue, the discussion on shoujo is starting to become off-topic.

Let's please course correct. Thank you.

To circle back around to the relevant topic: your gender doesn't determine whether or not you're capable of figuring out what a demographic wants. That remains true even if you're not part of the target demographic.

And I think the main reason we briefly veered off into shojo territory is to make this point: if men can successfully be editors of magazines that target a female demographic, women shouldn't be denied the opportunity to be editors on WSJ because they don't understand boy hearts or whatever. Just like men have overseen projects targeting girls that were successes, a WSJ manga that targets boys could possibly even benefit from a female perspective. Given how many major flops are currently in circulation at the magazine with an all-male editorial staff, it's hard to imagine what they'd have to lose by hiring a female editor at present.

I agree entirely but remember that the notion that female editors are denied entry or given more barriers to entry into editorial positions in magazines for male demographics is nothing but hearsay and rumors. Without any more to go on we have no reason to assume any prejudice is at hand, just like how in the most gender-bias-free countries of the world, men tend towards some jobs while women tend towards others.

I think it would be good to have a female and male editor at the same time, to work as a whole, that creates a better understanding about its readers. (since jump is read from the two sides).

In WSJ, can you name any female editors? You said magazines, but I'm not concerned about the other magazines, since this topic is about WSJ specifically.

It's probably illegal for them to refuse to accept applications from women just because they're women.

It also doesn't make sense why they would refuse to hire female editors for shonen manga but would hire female artists and writers for shonen manga.

Actually now that I think about it, I recall MHA vigilantes had a female editor at some point. Though it wasn't WSJ it was still a jump shonen magazine and Vigs was featured in wsj I believe.
