Oricon Rankings 28/10 - 03/11 (Weekly)

173650 *173650 Haikyuu!! #40
These are for 3 days, right? If so then HQ's drop is getting bigger. The last time HQ started with 3 days was for volume 33 and that one still sold 267683 copies. That an almost 100k drop for the same amount of days.

Not gonna happen at least before 2022
Why not? RxL sold better in its first volume and gor canned after 60 chapters.
Not that I think it will be cancelled next year, but the chances are fairly high imo

There's too much unfilled space in the magazine to cancel Samurai 8. While the ranks and sales are massively underwhelming it is still technically the biggest new series of 2019 (since Chainsawman started in 2018). Keep in mind there are 5 other new series that won't last very long, and 2 new manga are too new to say if they're hits of flops, and a few different long runners that are building up to their endings.

I still think Samurai 8 will probably just end up getting a full run at this point unless Kishi chooses to end it early. He has apparently planned it for a shorter run after all, and unless we get a sudden batch of 4 hits in a row or something I think 2 or so years is a pretty reasonable expectation.

5 other new series? I think you meant 4 (Yui, Tokyo, Taisei, Beast).

RxL had a terrible situation. Jujutsu, Act-Age and Noah had some life at that point, Momiji and Kimi wo Shinrayku have just started, and the only other manga that was doing poorly at that point was Ziga. Add the falling sales and the timeskip reception being disastrous...

Samurai 8, like Tirakai has said, has a really great situation of veterans leaving and newbies mostly bombing badly.

But RxL would have lived much longer had it debuted around the Jimoto/David batch.

You're assuming that the current hiring standards in WSJ are unfair, which we have no proof of.
WSJ has never hired a female editor.

That's not proof enough for you? There's millions of female manga fans in Japan. You're suggesting not a single one applied or qualified for the job?

How many covers left for this year? And what issue is the Christmas cover?

"We need female editors because their perspective will help in taking a step towards having better female characters, provide opportunities and inspiration for more women to enter the field"
Disagree. We don't *need* anything. Female editors will not lead to better female characters. Male editors certainly haven't lead to great male characters all around. We don't need more women to enter the field, nor do we need more men to enter the field. The field is fine and whoever wants to enter should try doing so.
It's not that we don't need more women to enter the field, rather WSJ has not had women in the editorial field and if they have had in the past the ratio of women to men editors is extremely poor to almost non-existent You can argue that is because "women weren't up for the job as good as the men" but that would literally be the same lazy argument that people have been giving for the last few centuries

Representation is a big thing. You shouldn't cut corners and just hire randoms just for representation but you should definitely make the playing ground level for equal opportunities for all kinds of people of all genders, races and background.
The latter is what is missing in majority of the world in almost every job market. Has been since for centuries and still is. The opportunity to be fairly judged based on skill and experience rather than gender and aging society driven norms.

As someone who has experienced racism on multiple levels during various stages of my career (people of different race being paid more just because of their skin color) and seen my best friend who is a woman and close friends (female ones) be denied opportunities because of their gender or having to work harder to prove themselves when compared to their male counterparts, I'm very aware of what non-level playing field looks like.

Also when are we getting a new topic? Once it hits 1000? Just before 2020 issue #1? or at the end of the year? It'll be our first WSJ reiwa-era topic.
I would love to keep this thread going and see how far we can go (assuming the lags don't get too bad).

Uh... Is that why Hori spent an arc on rank 30 Shiggy and VA jobbers and left high ranking Ochaco and Momo to do nothing?
How should I know?

I can only assume he was trying to give the underdevelopped characters some development.

So now you can read mangakas' minds?
I never said anything about mangaka's.

The person I quoted said that editors don't need to care about the lack of good female characters because the readers don't seem to care, and I explained why that reasoning is faulthy and/or lazy.

There's Dr Stone Reboot as well which I think is just getting a short run.
9 chapters, I believe they said.

No character in KnY has consistent development? Wow you triggered me in one sentence lol.
It's true. Only 2 or so characters have gotten development and it's not like they've been getting developed consistently with each arc or something. I'm surprised that people think the characters are consistently developed so the question asks; what do you define as consistent development? I feel like there may be a misunderstanding.
At this point it's literally just your taste. Kimetsu has well written characters in general and the women are no exception.

Ofc its my taste, who else is it then? I agree Kimetsu does have well written characters. I just dont think Nezuko is a good example of a good female MC at the same time she isnt bad/awful.

Yeah, I think we're confusing things here. Let's go with the Wikipedia definition to keep it simple.

Flat characters: two-dimensional, relatively uncomplicated
Round characters: complex figures with many different characteristics

Dynamic characters: those that change over the course of the story
Static characters: remain the same throughout

'Developped' can mean either round or dynamic depending on who you ask, so that's probably where the confusion comes from. Most characters in Kimetsu are round, but only very few of them are dynamic (so far).
