Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-01-19/13th-manga-taisho-awards-nominate-12-titles/.155540

Not sure if it's been posted already, but Chainsawman and Spy x Family are among the 12 manga that were nominated for the 13th Manga Taisho awards. Last year's winner was Astra Lost In Space.
Pretty happy about both nominations, they really were Jump's standout works last year (both in popularity and in quality).

(off-topic, but Ikoku Nikku, Blue Period and Skip to Loafer nominated are what actually made me really happy. All are great and it's nice to see them getting recognized)

Jigokuraku received a spinoff gag manga

well, that is unexpected
Can wait to see all my beloved dead characters doing funny things.

I think with series like Chainsawman, Agravity Boys, and Undead Unluck, we are seeing post modernism creeping into Jump. It's frightening.
What does post modernism even mean anymore :umad ,
I have seen that term got misued so frequently I can't see it as anything but another "bogeyman" term like SJW, "force diversity".

Great taste, fellow manga connoisseur :super
Tfw Dungeon Meshi won't get another Taisho nomination nor a chance to win one for real :biblethump

And it happened.

Is Top100 good or bad? I have no idea how many series you can read on MangaPlus. Or does this mean that Mitama raise or fell? Or is this about AGB overtaking Mitama?

It doesen't really work when Andy has no reaction to what happens to him...

Also, regarding Zipman...kinda? I'll admit my knowledge is mostly limited to W and onward Kamen Rider, but the episodic stories do tend to have that kind of structure (though with more focus on the ongoing narrative).
Andy does have an reaction to his punishment - he enjoys it, finds it "rad", wants even more blatant stuff to happen to him. Just look how much he enjoys the experiments or how he had a laugh at getting hit by a meteorite. He gets punished as I doubt he doesn't feel any pain or at least we have yet to be told he feels no pain whatsoever, he just doesn't care because he got a few screws loose in his head.

@Thundercat27 Dang, DM would deserve another Taisho nomination or trophy, it is still really good with its art, characters, world building, humor, everything even now, just not slowing down at all with its greatness.

It's more that Mitama really has a lower number of views compared to all the other current series despite being so praised for the ones who are reading, and Agravity Boys with only 5 chapters already surpassed (Undead Unluck will probably do with 4)

WSJ's already had a popular post-modernist series in Medaka Box. Heck any gag series that parodies jump cliches is essentially a form of post-modern.

What we need is some post-post-modernism.

That's more than a little tricky because it's difficult to really define what PPM actually even is. Art critics have been debating that endlessly.

And even then, how do we define the 2010s of manga as post-modern? What is post-modernism in this context, and how can we say it's stopping?

Back when Tokyo Shinobi Squad ran it felt like a bad early-mid 2000s manga to me.
Now Undead Unluck feels like from the early 90s and I somehow like it even less. Mean-spirited rubbish that is trying to be funny with ham-fisted slapstick and one of the most obnoxious protagonists I've seen in a while.
Instant-drop, pls get cancelled soon, kthx.

Aaaaaaaaaand it happened. Time to get the popcorn. Let's see if Boruto manages to make yet again a x2 views increase out of nowhere.

Congrats to Kimetsu on being the third most viewed series!

Don't think I have ever read an Isekai from WSJ. My memory might be fucking with me. I don't count Psyren as an Isekai since it's in the same world technically
yu yu hakusho is in a way an isekai, i mean it was one of the first that invented the truck-kun lol🚙 :wooo. i hope mashle isnt an isekai, i despite that genre. the good ones that put effort on twist and originality only deserve the respect

Ungh, this is so sad. (I hate Agravity Boys)

As for Unlucky Undead, I liked the premise of the series, even though the excessive groping really annoys me. I hope that, if other characters join any party or whatever, the groping stops or at least gets less frequent. For now I'll keep reading it!

Also, I thought this Zipman's chapter to be a little strange, too. All happened from nowhere and I didn't understand much.

This week's surprise to me was Samurai 8. I think the series is super boring but I really liked this chapter?

As for my top 5 for this week:
1 - Jujutsu Kaisen
2 - Chainsawman
3 - One Piece
4 - Mitama Secureity
5 - Samurai 8

I was fine with the new S8 chapter till it pulled an Alderaan out of nowhere with no impact whatsoever. So eh.

That's one thing about Samurai 8, it feels like it's the scale is meant to directly continue from Naruto's end point, without really considering that, as a new series with new characters, it hasn't actually built up to any of it. Feels to me like you're almost meant to directly relate it to Naruto's battles instead of attempting to be it's own thing with it's own sense of scale. Like it's doing things because 'look, this never happened in Naruto!' instead of 'this scene actually has a point in Samurai 8'.

I'd love to see a proper space-faring series in WSJ but S8 isn't the one. I wonder if wsj rejects anything that's a bit too similar to big stuff from other magazine, if they'd reject One Piece in space kind of series because of Eden's Zero.

Early Black Clover being an amalgamation of Magi and Fairy Tail among other stuff makes me think perhaps not but it mixed enough different popular series that you couldn't quite say it was directly doing one thing, it was more a summary of the past decade of shounen.

Iron Knight and several other series up until The Promised Neverland were clearly Jump's attempt at finding their own answer to SnK.
